Fury was helpless. Goose had masqueraded as an orange tabby at S.H.I.E.L.D. for years. Rarely hurt anyone. That's why he let it roam freely.
Who knew Hermione would recognize it instantly? Even if he tried to insist it was just a cat now, who'd believe him?!
Miss Witch summoned flames for it. And you're telling me it's just a cat?
Yeah, right!
"Flerken. One of the most terrifying creatures in the universe. Looks like a cat, but its stomach connects to infinitely vast space... Usually docile, but once it swallows you... heh."
Hermione snorted. "Either you have the Tesseract, or you're proficient in spatial magic. Otherwise, enjoy your stay inside forever!"
Hearing "Tesseract," Fury's heart skipped. Seeing Hermione's lack of reaction, he relaxed slightly. Rare unease flickered across his dark face.
Several present knew the Tesseract was in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s underground base. They glanced subtly at Fury.
Hermione naturally caught their little exchange. Just didn't bother exposing it.
She stepped forward, gently picking up Goose.
[Magical Creature]
[Flerken]
[Stomach connects to pocket dimension. Mouth extends tentacles to devour objects. Damage caused cannot be fully healed.]
Hmm... no collection prompt...
After thinking, Hermione pulled out a syringe.
While cradling Goose, she scratched under its chin.
"Meow—"
Seemingly comfortable, the cat closed its eyes, purring continuously.
Seizing the moment, Hermione quickly drew a sample.
[Flerken (Collected)]
"Meow!"
Goose protested briefly. But under Hermione's soothing, calmed again. Even licked her cheek.
"You just..." Fury watched, concerned.
Then again, considering Hermione's abilities, maybe this was normal.
"Drawing some blood for research. Flerkens aren't common." Hermione held Goose carefully. Fury's eyelid twitched.
Holding it gently, Hermione positioned Goose toward the TV.
"Come on, show them what you can do!"
Next second, Goose's mouth suddenly opened wide. Tentacles extended, grabbed the TV, pulled it inside.
Mouth snapped shut. Everything normal. As if nothing happened.
Only the vanished TV proved they hadn't hallucinated.
"Meow—"
Goose meowed again, looking at Hermione as if seeking praise.
Except for Fury, everyone's expressions stiffened.
Realizing they'd stood defenseless before this creature moments ago, concern gripped them.
They all looked at Fury. Questions in their eyes.
"Can you give me this kitty? I won't charge you lecture fees anymore." Hermione hugged Goose, reluctant to let go.
Fury looked conflicted.
"You won't even part with one cat."
"Well... it's dangerous—"
"No. It's clearly a kitty."
"You just said—"
"It's a kitty."
"They all heard..." Fury looked at the agents.
Rumlow studied the ceiling.
Sitwell examined something intently.
Barton organized his equipment.
Nick Fury: "..."
"Did I say anything?" Hermione looked at them.
Heads shook.
"Good."
Fury sighed. "Fine. Bring it back to visit sometimes."
Hermione nodded, placing Goose on her shoulder. "You're coming with me, okay?"
"Meow."
As if understanding, Goose meowed back. Didn't even glance at Fury.
Fury felt a pang.
Raised this cat for years...
"Class dismissed. We'll continue another time." Hermione ended the session. Everyone dispersed.
Fury said, "Miss Witch, I have something I'd like you to identify. See if you know what it is."
Having just taken his cat, Hermione felt slightly obliged. "No problem."
Director's Office.
Fury handed her photos.
Hermione looked down.
A silver-gray metal object—surface covered in mysterious patterns, irregular shape.
One glance. Hermione recognized it.
The Diviner.
"I know it. But what does '0-8-4' mean?"
Fury explained. "0-8-4 designation means unconfirmed origin, unknown object... Wait. You know it?"
Hermione nodded.
"Yeah. Inhuman artifact. How'd you get it?"
Fury perked up. "Inhumans? Another mystical race?"
"Huh? You don't know?"
Seeing Hermione's confusion, Fury grew uncertain.
"Should I?"
"Enhanced races should fall under your jurisdiction, right? What kind of S.H.I.E.L.D. Director are you?" Hermione was genuinely surprised.
Despite her comment, Fury remained composed.
"I'm starting to think partnering with you was interesting."
Hermione shook her head. "Long ago, the Kree visited Earth. Ran experiments. Created the Inhumans. Basically, humans affected by alien technology."
She paused.
"Did everyone who touched this turn to stone?"
Fury's eye narrowed.
"How'd you know?"
Hermione shrugged. "Then that's it. This contains Terrigen Crystals inside."
"Normal Inhumans are like regular people—no special abilities. Only through this can they transform and awaken powers. Ordinary people without Inhuman genes turn to stone on contact... Anyway, I don't understand Kree tech completely. I'm just a witch. Point is: don't mess with it."
"Best not to return it either. Some Inhumans cause trouble when they get power. Just like their creators, the Kree."
I see! Fury finally understood why everyone who touched it petrified.
Though Miss Witch seemed to really dislike the Kree.
Then he noticed something.
"You know the Kree?"
