Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Collecting Rent in Bo City

"A brand-new day…"

Wang Teng lay on his bed, his gaze calm and unfocused as he stared at the ceiling. He was already dressed in his school uniform.

He was fortunate enough to be one of the many transmigrators—his consciousness had crossed over into this world sixteen years ago.

Unfortunately, this world was anything but safe. In fact, it could be said to be extremely dangerous.

This was a world with magic!

What made things even more unsettling was that he had heard a *familiar* name at school. A student from the neighboring class—Mo Fan.

In a world overrun with demons and monsters, if one lacked strength—or if their strength was insufficient—then the right to decide whether one lived or died was never in their own hands.

It was instead tied around their waist, ready to be snatched away at any moment by some unknown danger.

Just like his family in this world.

Both of his parents had been Intermediate-level Mages. Logically speaking, in a small place like Bo City, they should have had more than enough ability to protect themselves.

Yet during one hunting expedition, they encountered a powerful demon. That hunt ended in total annihilation—the entire hunting squad was wiped out.

When fighting demons, there was no room for sentimentality. It was always either you died, or the demon did. Between tomorrow and an accident, no one ever knew which would arrive first.

In the end, only Wang Teng was left behind—along with the apartment he was currently living in. This apartment was located within the Safe Zone.

Back when they were buying property, he had strongly advised his parents to purchase housing within the Safe Zone. In the end, they bought an entire apartment building here.

The top floor—the tenth floor—was for their own residence, while the nine floors below were rented out.

Compared to other areas, the Safe Zone was slightly old-fashioned. After all, it was the first area constructed. Only later, when the population increased, did the city expand outward.

Since demons within the area had been driven out, people felt secure enough to settle down. However, if a demon invasion occurred, there would be no protective barrier at all!

Prosperity was prosperity—but one only had a single life.

After much reasoning and insistence on his part, they spent extra money to purchase the entire building.

"Ring, ring, ring…"

The crisp ringtone of his phone snapped him back to reality. He reached into his pocket, pulled out the phone, and answered the call.

"Hello?"

"Hello, are you the landlord?"

"Yes, I am."

"Um… I saw that there are rooms for rent downstairs. Could you show us around?"

"Sure."

Wang Teng's spirits immediately lifted. He got up at once, left his room, passed through the hall, and stepped out. The elevator was just a short distance away.

Before long, he arrived downstairs and saw a young couple waiting at the entrance.

"Hello, hello. Are you the landlord?"

The young man asked hesitantly. After all, Wang Teng didn't look like a landlord at all.

Wasn't someone who collected rent supposed to be a middle-aged uncle or aunt in their fifties or sixties?

"My name is Wang Teng. I'm the owner of this apartment building."

"You're here early, but your timing's good. The vacant rooms might all be gone in a few days."

He wasn't exaggerating. The rent here was cheap, and vacancies were rare. A one-bedroom, one-living-room apartment was only 1,000 a month.

Compared to other places, the price was far more favorable.

As a businessman at heart, he habitually praised his own property a little.

"Can we take a look?"

"Of course."

Wang Teng led the two of them up to Room 502 on the fifth floor and unlocked the door.

Watching them inspect the room, he didn't bother with any enthusiastic introductions. This wasn't his first time showing a unit, and the value spoke for itself.

The young couple carefully examined the bedroom and living room, whispering to each other. Judging by the smiles on their faces, they were clearly satisfied.

"Hello, landlord. My name is Liu Xiao. We're very satisfied with the place."

"Handsome, could you make it a bit cheaper?"

Wang Teng wore a confident smile. He glanced at the pretty woman giving him a pleading look and replied mercilessly:

"No."

"We'll take it."

Liu Xiao made the final decision. He had checked many places, but none compared to this one—especially the price.

"Alright. Take out your phones and download Blue Apartment. Inside…"

"Minimum lease is six months. One month's rent as deposit, one month prepaid…"

Wang Teng guided them smoothly through the digital contract process. After the payment was completed, he handed over the keys and left.

"I never thought that at just sixteen years old, I'd already be living the life of a rent collector…"

He calculated silently. The building was fully rented out again. Monthly income was 90,000. Annual income exceeded a million. After daily expenses, there was still plenty left over.

"It's about time to head to school."

He checked the time—7:30 a.m. Riding his electric scooter would be more than enough to get there.

"Tianlan Magic High School…"

Tianlan Magic High School was one of Bo City's magic schools, and it was quite well-known among students.

After all, not just anyone could get in.

If your magic theory scores weren't good enough and you failed the exams, you wouldn't even have the chance to awaken magic.

There was no talk of "my fate is mine to decide."

Though Wang Teng had transmigrated with fragments of ancient martial arts scriptures from his previous life, combined with the innate talent of his soul in this world—capable of devouring ambient spiritual energy—and a natural compatibility with the energy of heaven and earth, he had still only reached the *Seeing the Divine without Flaws* stage, the second realm of spiritual cultivation, at sixteen.

Martial cultivation progressed through Ming Force, Dark Force, Transforming Force, Gang Force, Core Formation, and finally Seeing the Divine without Flaws.

By this stage, the body's capabilities far exceeded ordinary humans. Yet in his own assessment, it was still only on par with Servant-level demons at best.

Still trash.

Before high school, he had studied a great deal about demons and magic—albeit only basic knowledge—but it had been extremely useful for his thinking.

In this dangerous world, Mages were nothing more than ants in front of truly powerful demons. Their lifespans were pitifully short.

Even Servant-level vampires were notoriously long-lived…

So from the very beginning, he had already made up his mind—if he ever got the chance…

However, with his current level of knowledge, it still wasn't enough to support such a risky decision.

Entering Tianlan Magic High School was only the first step. His ultimate goal was Pearl Institute of Magic—that was where true magical knowledge converged.

Mages were only the beginning.

Demons were the truth!

"Mo Fan dared to risk death to become a Devil…"

"If he could do it, so could I!"

After parking his electric scooter outside the gates of Tianlan Magic High School, Wang Teng walked into this starting point of his journey with resolute eyes.

"Hello everyone. I'm Zhang Jianguo, homeroom teacher of Class 7, Grade 10. I'll be teaching you the Demonology course…"

Wang Teng had no interest in listening. His gaze drifted toward a student in purple clothing not far away.

"That guy… could he be Xu Zhaoting, the one who awakened the Lightning Element?"

"I didn't expect to end up in the same class. I wonder if the ones next door are those guys…"

"Alright, I can see everyone's getting impatient. Let's head to the field. I hope all of you awaken the element you desire."

"Follow me to the opening ceremony."

Seeing the restless students, Zhang Jianguo realized he had talked enough. He waved his hand and led the entire class downstairs toward the large open field.
