Nyssa didn't stop running until the trees thinned and the hut came back into view.
Her breath came unevenly, her chest rising and falling too fast, her thoughts stumbling over each other in twisted confusion.
Leilani's reaction replayed in her mind again and again, her face draining of color, the way she had stepped back, the urgency in her voice.
"Do you have powers?"
What did that even mean?
Nyssa shook her head as she ran, as if she could physically dislodge the question.
"No," she muttered under her breath. "No, that's ridiculous…"
But something about the way Leilani had looked at her, like she had seen something odd, refused to leave her.
Finally, the hut door came into view and Nyssa pushed it open with urgent force.
"Leilani—"
Her voice was suddenly cut off, when she looked inside.
Leilani was already inside, with her mother. They both stood in the centre of the room and they both…had grave expressions on their faces.
