Chapter 10 - The Rehearsal Dinner

Adrian Hawthorne did not look like a man who was about to be abandoned. He stood at the center of the candlelit terrace the night before the wedding, one hand resting lightly against the back of Seraphina's chair, his posture relaxed and commanding at the same time. The river beyond the estate reflected strings of golden lights, and laughter drifted easily between tables set with crystal and white roses.

If anyone had studied his face closely, they would have seen nothing but devotion.

Seraphina watched him from across the long table and felt a chill she did not show. He was magnificent at this.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Adrian said, rising smoothly to his feet with a glass of champagne in his hand, "thank you for honoring us tonight."

Conversations quieted instantly. He did not raise his voice, yet every guest leaned in as if compelled.

"I have been fortunate in many ways," he continued, his gaze finding Seraphina with warmth. "But the greatest fortune of my life has been standing beside Seraphina Vale."

A soft murmur of approval moved through the crowd. Seraphina was looking at him steadily.

She knew that tone. It was reverent without being sentimental. It was sincere without revealing too much. It was designed to inspire trust.

"When I first met her," Adrian said, "I admired her intelligence. When I began working with her family, I respected their legacy. When she agreed to marry me, I promised myself I would protect both."

Her father nodded approvingly from the other end of the table.

Seraphina's stomach tightened to the word protect. That word again.

Adrian lifted his glass slightly."Vale Holdings has shaped this city for decades," he went on. "Tomorrow, our families unite not just in marriage but in vision."

There he was, talking about vision. Several board members exchanged pleased looks. Seraphina watched carefully as Adrian allowed a deliberate pause before continuing.

"We live in uncertain times," he said. "Markets shift. Competitors circle. Stability requires strength."

He reached for her hand gently."I vow to ensure that strength," he finished.

Applause rose warmly. Her mother looked at her eyes Seraphina forced a small smile. Every phrase carried layers, and stability required strength.

He was not speaking as a groom, he was speaking as a strategist. As the applause faded, Adrian leaned slightly closer to her.

"You look distracted," he murmured under the cover of cheers.

"I am listening," she replied evenly.

"I hope you are not having second thoughts," he said lightly, though his fingers tightened almost around hers but she didn't notice.

She met his eyes."Are you?" she asked.

His smile deepened."Never." Dinner resumed with renewed energy.

Adrian moved from one guest to another, changing the way he spoke to fit each conversation. He talked to investors about growth and lowering risk. With political figures, he referenced infrastructure initiatives and regulatory partnerships. With extended family, he spoke of loyalty and commitment.

He carried himself flawlessly.

Seraphina observed quietly. Five years ago, she would have been proud. Tonight, she saw the performance for what it was. At one point, her father joined Adrian near the railing overlooking the river.

Seraphina watched from her seat as they spoke privately. Her father laughed at something Adrian said and clapped him warmly on the shoulder. She felt a pain in her chest that was not anger but sadness.

Her father trusted him completely. Adrian returned to her side moments later, setting a fresh glass of champagne before her."You have barely touched your drink," he noted.

"I want to remember tonight clearly," she said.

He looked at her carefully."Is there something you wish to tell me?" he asked. The question was casual on the surface, but she heard the edge beneath it.

She tilted her head slightly."Is there something you think I know?" she countered.

His eyes flickered briefly, then smoothed."You always know more than you say," he replied. That was true now in a way he did not yet understand.

As dessert was served, Adrian requested the floor again."I have one more surprise," he announced, and guests murmured curiously.

Seraphina's pulse quickened. A large screen appeared behind him, and a sleek presentation appeared.

Her breath slowed. "This," Adrian said confidently, "is a preview of tomorrow's announcement."

Slides shifted to display projected growth charts, partnership diagrams, and a new proposed holding structure logo.

Seraphina recognized the framework instantly. He was unveiling the consolidation plan publicly before the ceremony even occurred. Several guests leaned forward with interest. Her father frowned slightly, studying the diagrams.

Adrian continued smoothly."After tomorrow, Vale Holdings and Hawthorne Enterprises will operate under a unified strategic umbrella," he explained. "This alignment ensures long-term stability and expanded influence."

Her name appeared beside his on the final slide as the Co-Executive Director. The title was decorative and she knew that now.

Applause erupted again. Adrian looked at her expectantly."Would you like to say something, Seraphina?" he asked, microphone extended toward her.

Every eye in the room turned. Her heartbeat thundered steadily, but her expression remained composed. This was the moment he believed would bind her publicly.

She stood slowly."Thank you all for coming tonight," she began.

Her voice carried clearly."I have learned a great deal about partnership over the past five years," she continued.

Adrian watched her intently."Partnership requires transparency," she said calmly. "It requires mutual protection."

A faint crease formed between his brows."And it requires trust," she added. Silence deepened around the tables, and she held the microphone firmly."Tomorrow will indeed change everything," she said.

Adrian's jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. She returned the microphone to him without speaking further. Polite applause followed, uncertain and scattered.

Adrian recovered instantly."Well said," he remarked smoothly. "Tomorrow begins a new era." Dinner concluded with lingering conversation and soft music.

As guests began to depart, Adrian stepped close to her again."You surprised me," he said quietly.

"How?" she asked.

"You sounded almost cautious," he replied.

"Should I not be?" she asked. He looked at her face with sharper focus now.

"You trust me," he said. She did not answer immediately. After a brief pause, she smiled.

"I trust that tomorrow will reveal everything," she said.

His gaze darkened slightly. "That sounds like a warning," he observed.

"It sounds like anticipation," she corrected.

A staff member approached to inform them that the final guests had left. The terrace emptied slowly, leaving only the two of them under the lights.

Adrian reached up and brushed a strand of hair away from her face."You are mine tomorrow," he said softly. The possessiveness in his tone was unmistakable.

Seraphina met his eyes without flinching."That depends," she replied.

His hand stilled."On what?" he asked quietly. She held his gaze for one long, deliberate second. "On whether I choose to walk toward you," she said.

The smile on his face did not disappear but something behind it shifted, and for the first time that evening, Adrian Hawthorne looked uncertain.
