His face bore the still-burning marks of the physical ordeal he had just faced in the Bièvres sports facilities. His left eyebrow was split open, hastily stitched by the on-call doctor, and a deep purple bruise already swelled his right cheekbone.
His lower lip, split by the fist of a 110-kilo giant, left a lingering coppery taste on his tongue.
Yet, Lazare felt no frustration. The physical defeat on the tatami wasn't a humiliation; it was a necessary calibration. He had pushed his own physical form to its absolute breaking point, measuring with scientific precision the gap between his analytical intellect and the biological limitations of his current youth.
The pain reminded him that he was alive, subject to the laws of thermodynamics and fatigue. He wasn't just an abstraction of silicon and algorithms. This reset of his physical ego was essential before facing the months ahead.
The sedan slowed abruptly, entering the access ramp of Volta SA's headquarters. The reinforced metal gates disappeared with a pneumatic hiss.

The vast open-plan office was deserted. All the directors, usually focused on their individual terminals, had gathered in the large control room adjacent to the boardroom. The harsh light of the industrial fluorescent tubes was switched off.
Only the cold, bluish glow of a huge wall-mounted projection screen illuminated the pale faces of its employees.
Lazarus moved silently into the doorway, blending into the gloom.
Karim Belkacem, with his shirt sleeves rolled up and his tie loosened, stood near the projection wall. Beside him, Julien, the chief mathematician, and Ilya Volkov, the director of the memory division, stared at the image transmitted by satellite from California with an intensity bordering on astonishment.

They underestimated American engineering. We haven't slowed down. We've simply taken the time to design the inconceivable. »
With a sweeping gesture, Grove turned towards the giant screen behind him. A three-dimensional computer-generated image revealed the anatomy of a new electronic chip, whose massive physical dimensions elicited an exclamation of surprise from the American audience.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is the processor that defines the new era of personal and professional computing. This is the Intel Pentium.
In Volta's control room, Julien immediately leaned over his keyboard to type in the technical specifications displayed on the screen. His fingers flew across the keys, transcribing the raw data revealed by the competitor. »Thirty-one thousand... no, that's impossible,« Julien murmured, his eyes widening. »Karim, look at these figures.
They show 3.1 million transistors!« Ilya Volkov took off his glasses, rubbing his eyelids to make sure he was reading correctly. « It's a mountain of silicon. Our VESLA 2190, the A revision we just finalized, has exactly 1,050,000 transistors on a 215-square-millimeter die.
They've just tripled our overall density. How do they manage to etch such a mass without the chip melting from its own heat? »
« They're using a 0.8-micrometer BiCMOS process, » Julien analyzed, deciphering Intel's slides. « It's a transitional technology, incredibly expensive and complex to stabilize.
They're combining bipolar transistors for speed and CMOS to reduce power consumption. It's brute force, a lavish display of financial and material resources to compensate for their architectural lag. They're announcing frequencies of 60 and 66 MHz. »
Karim Belkacem kept his eyes glued to the screen. The technical director of Volta SA understood exactly what the Santa Clara firm had just accomplished.
« They abandoned the scalar model of their old 486, » Karim observed, his tone imbued with purely intellectual respect. « The Pentium is a two-way superscalar architecture.
A 2-issue Out-of-Order. It can execute two instructions per clock cycle, out of order. They compressed years of theoretical research to produce this monster. »
Lazare, still silent in the doorway, listened to his men's analysis. Intel hadn't remained idle. Pushed to its limits by the loss of its European markets, the Californian company had injected billions of dollars into its laboratories, forcing semiconductor physics to bend to its demands.

Julien stared at the computer's verdict, his face pale. »The pure performance figures are in,« the mathematician announced. »If we compare the 66 MHz Pentium with our 66 MHz VESLA 2190...« He hesitated for a fraction of a second, weighing the weight of his announcement.

They've just made up a theoretical decade's delay in twenty-four months. The threat never disappeared. It's just donned a new silicon armor. »
However, the technological shock was only the first step in Andy Grove's intervention. The Intel boss hadn't summoned the world's press solely to present logic gate diagrams.
On the screen, Grove walked towards the lectern, displaying a predatory smile.

« But Lazare brought the MegaFab to Alsace. By pouring our own concrete and mastering the entire etching process, we developed Silicon Binning. Our high-end VESLA 2190 chip is expensive, certainly, but it absorbs all the fixed costs.
This allows us to take our downgraded chips, those with a microscopic defect in a logic core or portion of cache memory, laser-cut them, and resell them under the name VESLA 2150 SX. »
Karim looked at the screen where Andy Grove was celebrating his commercial triumph.
Grove is selling its Pentium at a loss for nearly $900. We're going to offer the complete AXIOM 2150 SX, with the throttled but perfectly stable VESLA processor, for €381, or about 2500 French francs. Our marginal cost on the 2150 SX is virtually zero.

A wolfish smile, revealing his slightly split lower lip, slowly stretched across his face.
