Chapter 11 - Chapter 11: The Static Ghost

The rooftop door slammed shut behind them as Kenji and Leo sprinted into the stairwell. The alarm was a physical weight, a rhythmic, soul-crushing blare that vibrated in Kenji's teeth.

"Okay, okay," Leo panted, his fingers flying across his tablet as they descended the stairs. "Ghost Protocol. We blend. We look like terrified extras in a disaster movie. Just... keep your hands in your pockets. Your cuticles are literally sparking!"

They burst into the second-floor hallway, which was a sea of panicked teenagers and shouting teachers. It was the perfect cover. Kenji pulled his hood up and hunched his shoulders, keeping his gaze on the floor. Every time a student brushed past him, he felt a sharp snap of static, a tiny reminder that his power was itching to break through his skin.

The Arrival of the Reclaimers

At the end of the hall, the heavy double doors kicked open. Four men in matte-grey tactical gear marched in, their movements synchronized and cold. They didn't carry traditional weapons; instead, they held sleek, overslung rifles that hummed with a low-frequency blue light—Stun-Emitters.

Their helmets were the most terrifying part: smooth, faceless glass visors that glowed with a digital HUD.

"Everyone, stay calm and remain against the walls!" the lead Reclaimer shouted, his voice amplified and metallic. "This is a sanctioned security sweep. We are looking for a high-risk bio-signature. Cooperation ensures safety."

The Scanning Process

Kenji leaned against the lockers, his heart hammering a frantic rhythm. He watched as the lead mercenary raised his left hand. A beam of amber light shot out from a wrist-mounted device, sweeping across the students one by one.

The Scan: When the light hit a student, a green "Clear" icon flashed on the mercenary's visor.

The Danger: As they got closer to Kenji, the "hum" in his chest grew louder, reacting to the scanner's frequency. His Red Static was beginning to vibrate in harmony with their tech.

"Leo," Kenji whispered, his voice trembling. "That light... it's not looking for a face. It's looking for the Red Lightning's frequency. When it hits me, it's going to go off like a bomb."

"I see it," Leo muttered, frantically typing code. "They're using a Hyper-Spectral Bio-Scanner. If I can't jam their local network in the next thirty seconds, you're going to be 'Phase 1' of whatever reclamation they're talking about."

The Revelation

The mercenaries weren't just scanning; they were talking over an open comms channel that Leo had managed to intercept through the school's intercom system.

"Unit 1 to Command. Bio-trace is heavy in the North Corridor. The 'Variable' is close. Remember, the Puppet Master wants the core intact. If he resists, use the Neural-Dampers."

Kenji looked up. The lead Reclaimer was ten feet away. The amber light was sweeping toward him. Just as the beam was about to touch Kenji's shoes, Hana stepped out from a nearby classroom, her camera phone raised high.

"Who authorized this?!" she yelled, her voice shaking but defiant. "You don't have a Vanguard warrant to scan students! This is a private institution!"

The mercenary didn't stop. He pushed her aside with a cold, mechanical shove. Hana tripped, her phone skidding across the floor toward Kenji's feet.

The Reclaimer stepped forward, his scanner locking onto the space where Kenji stood.
