I forced down the invasive, dangerous instinct screaming at me to run. My hand trembled as I reached out, breaking off a small piece of the heavy cake. Even if it was laced with sedatives—even if it was very well poisoned—I didn't care anymore. I put it to my lips.

​The taste hit me, and the world simply dropped away.

​It was so intoxicatingly rich, so sharp with the tang of real silver berries, that it felt less like food and more like a physical force. For a split second, I felt entirely weightless, as if my boots had completely lost their connection to the earth and left me levitating in the sweet meadow air. It tasted like better times—moments far beyond what my fractured memories could actually encompass.
