Chapter 14 - The Vultures' Feast

The alarms in the Shadow Sanctum weren't sirens; they were a low, rhythmic thrumming that vibrated through the black crystalline floor. Leo sat on his throne, his mind expanded across the district through the Architect of Ruin interface. The fifty-million-credit bounty was like a beacon in the dark, and the first wave of "vultures" had finally landed.

[Sensors Active: 47 Hostile Signatures detected in the outer perimeter.] [Target Identification: The 'Iron Dogs' Mercenary Company.]

"They're burning the slums," Seraphina whispered, her eyes reflecting the distant orange glow of fires being lit three blocks away. "They aren't even looking for you yet. They're just clearing the 'clutter' to make a path."

Leo's jaw tightened. The "clutter" were the people he had grown up with. "They're trying to draw me out. They think I still care about the 'trash' in this district."

He stood up, his Agility making his movements almost invisible to the naked eye. He walked toward the massive gates where the Obsidian Sentinel stood like a gargoyle. As he reached the threshold, a voice crackled through the warehouse's external speakers—a voice he hadn't heard in years.

"Leo! I know you're in there, man!"

Leo froze. His Intelligence stats instantly mapped the voice to a name: Kael. They had been "Cleaners" together for two years. Kael was the only one who had ever shared his rations with Leo when the Silver Dawn forgot to pay them.

"Kael?" Leo muttered, his violet eyes flickering.

[System Warning: Emotional Resonance Detected. Monarch's Aura Stabilizing...]

"They've got my sister, Leo!" Kael's voice was hysterical, breaking through the sound of gunfire in the distance. "The Iron Dogs... they said if I didn't get you to come out, they'd send her into the R-Rank gates as 'bait.' Please! Just talk to them! They just want the System!"

Seraphina placed a cold, runic hand on Leo's shoulder. "It's a trap, my King. A clumsy one, but effective. If you walk out there, you're choosing the 'Cleaner' over the 'Monarch'."

"I know," Leo said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, hollow register.

He didn't walk out. He used Void Flicker.

In a burst of purple sparks, Leo appeared on the roof of a crumbling tenement building across from the warehouse. Below him, the street was a warzone. A dozen mercenaries in high-tech exo-suits were rounding up civilians. In the center of the chaos stood Kael, looking gaunt and terrified, holding a megaphone with trembling hands.

Standing behind Kael was a man Leo recognized: 'Vulture' Vance, a Rank-B Mercenary known for his cruelty. He had a heavy pistol pressed against Kael's temple.

"Come on out, Shadow King!" Vance screamed into the night. "Don't tell me the great Monarch is hiding behind a bunch of bums!"

Leo didn't feel the surge of "heroic" rage he expected. Instead, he felt a cold, clinical disgust. He looked at Kael—the man who was once his only friend—and saw how the world had broken him. Kael wasn't a friend anymore; he was a tool being used by the very people who had oppressed them both.

"Kael," Leo's voice boomed, amplified by his Royal Authority. It didn't come from the roof; it seemed to come from the shadows themselves, echoing off every wall in the street.

Vance spun around, his eyes darting frantically. "Where are you?! Show yourself!"

"You told me once that the only way to survive Aethelgard was to stay invisible," Leo said, his voice cold and devoid of pity. "You were wrong, Kael. The only way to survive is to become the thing the city is afraid of."

"Leo? Help me!" Kael sobbed, looking up at the dark skyline.

"I am helping you," Leo whispered.

[Skill Activation: Shadow-Bolt Turrets.]

From the roof of the warehouse, the four black crystal turrets Leo had built using the Engine of Ruin swiveled with mechanical precision. They didn't fire at Vance. They fired at the exo-suit mercenaries surrounding the civilians.

THOOM. THOOM. THOOM.

Bolts of concentrated dark mana tore through the air. Each shot was a masterpiece of Calculated Malice, seeking out the weak points in the mercenaries' armor. In five seconds, the Iron Dogs' front line was reduced to piles of smoking metal and ash.

Vance panicked. He pulled the trigger on Kael, but before the hammer could strike, Leo was there.

[Skill Activation: Void Flicker.]

Leo appeared between them, his hand catching the slide of the pistol. With his Strength of 26, he crushed the heavy metal frame of the gun as if it were made of parchment. He didn't look at Vance. He looked at Kael.

"The Leo you knew died in the Serpent's Maw," Leo said, his purple eyes burning with a terrifying intensity. "This is the world you wanted, Kael. A world where the strong take what they want. Well... I want this district."

Leo's hand moved in a blur. He didn't kill Vance with a blade; he used Soul Devourer. The mercenary leader screamed as his Rank-B mana was ripped from his body, his skin turning grey and shriveled in seconds.

[Target 'Vulture Vance' Eliminated.] [Experience Gained: +2,000.] [Level Up! Level 19 -> Level 20.]

The remaining Iron Dogs fled into the night, abandoning their gear and their captives. The civilians stared at Leo with a mixture of awe and absolute terror. They didn't see a savior. They saw a monster that happened to be standing on their side of the fence.

Kael fell to his knees, shaking. "What... what are you?"

Leo didn't answer. He looked at the notification flashing in his vision.

[Level 20 Reached. Class Evolution Available.] [Choose your Path: 'Shadow Overlord' or 'Void Executioner'.]

"Go home, Kael," Leo said, turning his back on his past. "And tell anyone else who comes for the bounty: The Monarch doesn't negotiate. He only harvests."

He vanished back into the shadows of the Sanctum, where Seraphina was waiting with a smile that was both proud and hungry. The "Cleaner" was officially gone. The Monarch was born.
