CHAPTER FORTY
Several weeks later, the investigation reached an important stage.
The financial records, Peter's testimony and Michael's supporting documents had helped the investigators build a clearer account of what happened at the company. Robert remained under investigation, and the legal process was continuing.
Richard formally corrected his earlier accusations against Grace.
For the first time in years, Grace felt able to speak about the past without fearing that everyone would automatically believe the worst about her.
Aisha watched her mother place the signed statement beside Samuel's letter.
"Are you happy, Mum?" she asked.
Grace smiled gently.
"I am relieved. Happiness will take time, but I no longer feel as though I have to defend myself against a lie every day."
Aisha hugged her.
"You deserve peace."
"So do you, my daughter."
That evening, Daniel invited Aisha to the same garden café where they had shared one of their first honest conversations after reuniting.
When she arrived, she found a small table decorated with flowers.
She looked at him suspiciously.
"What have you planned?"
"Nothing dangerous."
"That's exactly what someone with a plan would say."
Daniel laughed and pulled out her chair.
They ate dinner and talked about everything except the investigation. They discussed Aisha's career, Daniel's business plans and the possibility of taking a short trip together when their schedules allowed.
After dinner, Daniel became quiet.
"Aisha, do you remember what I told you on graduation night?"
She looked at him.
"You told me you wanted to give me a gift."
"I also wanted to tell you that I loved you."
Her expression softened.
"I remember."
"I can't give you back the years we lost. I can't promise that life will always be easy. But I can promise that I won't let silence speak for me again."
Aisha felt emotion rise in her chest.
"That's all I ever wanted from you. Honesty."
Daniel took her hand.
"Then let's keep choosing honesty."
She smiled.
"And let's stop letting the past decide everything."
He nodded.
They left the café and walked through the garden beneath the soft evening lights.
At the gate, Aisha stopped and turned towards him.
"Daniel?"
"Yes?"
"I'm glad we met again."
His face softened.
"So am I."
She leaned towards him and kissed him, no longer afraid to show him how much he meant to her.
For six years, Aisha had believed their story ended on the night of their graduation.
But the years apart had changed them, taught them and forced them to confront truths they might otherwise have avoided.
Their future would not be built by pretending the past never happened.
It would be built by understanding it, learning from it and choosing to move forward together.
As they walked towards the car, Daniel held her hand.
"Ready for our next chapter?"
Aisha smiled.
"With you? Yes."
And for the first time, the words felt less like a promise made in fear and more like a future they were both ready to create.
