Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: The Student Council's Interest

The aftermath of the Practical Exam was a whirlwind of speculation and hushed conversations. Han-sol, Min-jun, and Jin-woo had not only passed, but their performance, particularly the impossible defeat of the System Sentinel, had become the stuff of legend. Instructor Kwon's report, detailing the unprecedented glitches and Han-sol's unique ability to counter them, had reached the highest echelons of the Academy. Han-sol, the F-Rank anomaly, was no longer just a curiosity; he was a topic of intense discussion.

His System, now more attuned to the Academy's internal network, registered a new, pervasive error: [HAN-SOL, LEE: ATTENTION - HIGH], [SCRUTINY: INTENSIFIED]. He was under a microscope, and he knew it. The Academy, still reeling from Kaelen's infiltration, was now hyper-aware of any anomalies within its System, and Han-sol was the biggest anomaly of all.

One afternoon, as he was leaving mana cultivation class, a crisp, authoritative voice called his name. "Lee, Han-sol. A moment of your time, please."

He turned to see a figure standing by the corridor, radiating an aura of calm power. It was a young woman, no older than himself, but her presence commanded respect. Her Academy uniform, tailored to perfection, bore the distinctive silver insignia of the Student Council. Around her, Han-sol's System registered: [ENTITY: YUNA, PARK], [RANK: S], [CLASS: SYSTEM ARCHITECT], [STATUS: AUTHORITY - HIGH].

S-Rank. A System Architect. The highest rank an Awakened could achieve within the Academy, reserved for those with unparalleled control over System mechanics. Yuna Park was a prodigy, a legend in her own right, known for her meticulous understanding of the Tower's code and her unwavering dedication to the Academy's integrity.

"Yuna Park," Han-sol acknowledged, bowing slightly. He felt a flicker of apprehension. S-Ranks rarely interacted with F-Ranks, let alone sought them out.

"Your performance in the Practical Exam was… noteworthy, Han-sol," Yuna said, her voice cool and measured. Her eyes, a piercing shade of grey, seemed to see right through him. "The official report attributes the defeat of the System Sentinel to a 'unique tactical maneuver.' My own analysis suggests otherwise."

Han-sol remained silent, his mind racing. She knew. Or at least, she suspected. Her class, System Architect, meant she understood the underlying code, the very fabric of reality that Han-sol manipulated.

"The Sentinel's adaptive protocol was designed by my team," Yuna continued, her gaze unwavering. "It was flawless. Invulnerable to all known attacks. Yet, you found a vulnerability. A temporal loop, as Instructor Kwon's report vaguely suggested. A recursive optimization error." She paused, letting the words hang in the air. "You debugged it, didn't you, Han-sol?"

Han-sol swallowed. There was no point in denying it. "My skill… it allows me to see errors. And sometimes, to rewrite them."

Yuna's lips curved into a faint, almost imperceptible smile. "Error Rewrite. A fascinating skill. A theoretical class, thought to be impossible. You are a living anomaly, Han-sol. A walking debugger." She took a step closer, her voice dropping to a near whisper. "The Academy has been compromised. Kaelen, the Rogue System Administrator, infiltrated our network. He left behind a trail of corrupted code, hidden vulnerabilities. We are trying to clean it up, but it's like trying to catch smoke."

"I know," Han-sol admitted. "I encountered him. I… helped sever his connection to the student records."

Yuna's eyes widened slightly, a flicker of genuine surprise. "So it was you. We detected a sudden, surgical severing of Kaelen's remote access. It was too precise to be a conventional countermeasure. You are more capable than even the reports suggest." She studied him for a long moment, then continued. "The Student Council is tasked with maintaining the integrity of the Academy's System, both physical and digital. We believe Kaelen's influence is deeper than we initially thought. He may have corrupted not just the network, but even some of the Academy's core protocols."

"Like the Practical Exam?" Han-sol ventured.

"Precisely," Yuna confirmed. "The aggression parameters of the Rock Golem, the illusions… Kaelen was testing his control, pushing the boundaries of his influence. And you, Han-sol, were the only one who could counter him."

She paused again, her gaze intense. "The Academy is hosting the annual Inter-Academy Tournament next month. It's a prestigious event, attracting the best Awakened from across the continent. It's also a prime target for Kaelen. We believe he will attempt to exploit the Tournament's System, to cause chaos, to further his agenda."

"And you want me to… debug the Tournament?" Han-sol asked, a sense of dread creeping into his stomach. A tournament, with thousands of participants, watched by millions. The scale of the errors, the potential for disaster, was immense.

"Not just debug," Yuna corrected. "We want you to be our… internal auditor. You will participate in the Tournament, ostensibly as a regular student. But your true mission will be to detect and neutralize any System anomalies, any glitches, any signs of Kaelen's interference. You will be our eyes and ears, our hidden weapon."

[MISSION: INTER-ACADEMY TOURNAMENT - INTERNAL AUDITOR]

[OBJECTIVE: DETECT & NEUTRALIZE K.A.E.L.E.N. INTERFERENCE]

[RISK: EXTREME]

The notification flashed in his System. Extreme risk. It was a suicide mission, a plunge into a glitched maelstrom. But he also saw the [REWARD: SYSTEM KNOWLEDGE - HIGH] notification. This was an opportunity to understand Kaelen's methods, to delve deeper into the System's vulnerabilities, to truly become the Sovereign of the Glitched Tower.

"What about my F-Rank status?" Han-sol asked, trying to buy time, to process the enormity of the request. "I'm not exactly a combat specialist."

Yuna smiled, a genuine, almost mischievous smile this time. "Your rank is irrelevant, Han-sol. Your skill is what matters. And as for combat… you'll have a team. A very special team. Consider it a direct order from the Student Council. You are in." She turned, her silver insignia glinting in the fluorescent light. "Report to the Council chambers tomorrow morning. We have much to discuss."

Han-sol watched her walk away, his mind reeling. He was no longer just a student; he was an agent, a secret weapon in a hidden war. The Inter-Academy Tournament, a spectacle of power and skill, was about to become his next debugging ground. And Kaelen, the Rogue System Administrator, was waiting. The Student Council's interest, he realized, was not just a recognition of his abilities, but an invitation to a game with stakes far higher than he could have ever imagined. He was about to step onto a stage where every glitch could mean disaster, and he was the only one who could see the code. His journey as the Debugger was about to go global.
