Chapter 55 - Frame 55: The Quiet Before the Storm

The sunrise over HUAD brought a crisp, golden clarity to the campus. The glitter of the exhibition was packed away, the velvet drapes folded, and the "Visionary Excellence" trophy sat quietly on Yan-chen's desk. But for the four friends, there was no time to linger on the triumph. The academic calendar was relentless—final semester exams were only five days away.

The atmosphere on campus shifted from creative celebration to a high-pressure silence. The library was overflowing, and every cafe was packed with students buried in thick textbooks and glowing laptop screens.

To escape the stifling air of the indoor study halls, the four of them—Seo-yoon, Yan-chen, Wei, and Lin—claimed a large stone table in the university's hidden willow garden.

The scene was a beautiful, organized chaos of across-the-aisle collaboration:

Yan-chen was focused, his glasses on, crossing out complex structural calculations with a fountain pen. He looked like his old self, yet every few minutes, his hand would reach out under the table to find Seo-yoon's, a silent grounding touch before he dove back into his work.

Seo-yoon was surrounded by printouts of her screenplays and history of cinema notes. She was highlighting text in soft pastels, her brow furrowed in concentration.

Wei was unusually studious, trying to make up for the week he spent covering for Yan-chen. He kept stealing glances at Lin, his expression a mix of lingering heartache and a stubborn, protective friendship.

Mei Lin was buried in her editing manuals. Though she had rejected Wei, she hadn't moved her seat. She stayed close to him, occasionally sliding a piece of fruit or a snack onto his notebook without saying a word.

"If I see one more physics equation, I think my brain will actually short-circuit," Wei groaned, leaning his head back against the stone bench.

"Focus, Wei," Yan-chen said, not looking up from his paper. "If you fail this, Zhang will have you in the lab for the entire winter break."

Wei shuddered, immediately sitting upright. Seo-yoon caught Yan-chen's eye and shared a small, knowing smile. The "Ice Prince" was still a perfectionist, but his voice carried a new warmth—a layer of humanity that made the long hours of study feel like a shared adventure rather than a chore.

While the garden was filled with the soft sounds of turning pages and hushed discussions, a different kind of silence filled the taxi heading toward the Suzhou airport.

Kwon Min-ho sat in the backseat, his suitcase beside him. He looked out at the passing trees, his face reflecting in the glass. He had checked out of his hotel at dawn. There were no more calls to make, no more confrontations to plan.

As the taxi pulled up to the international terminal, he looked at his boarding pass for Seoul. He had come to China to reclaim a past that didn't exist anymore, and in doing so, he had finally seen the woman Seo-yoon had become. He realized that loving someone sometimes meant knowing when you were no longer the person they needed.

He walked through the sliding doors, leaving the city of bridges behind. For the first time, he wasn't looking back.

Back in the garden, the sun began to set, casting long, orange shadows across their notes.

"We should wrap up," Seo-yoon suggested, stretching her arms. "The Mandarin exam is first thing tomorrow."

Yan-chen closed his sketchbook—the one now filled with as many notes as there were drawings of her. He stood up and held out his hand to her.

"Five days," he said, his voice low and certain. "Then the semester is over, and we can finally take that walk without any blueprints or scripts in our way."

Seo-yoon took his hand, feeling the silver ring through her palm. The exams were coming, and the pressure was high, but for the first time in her life, she wasn't afraid of the test. She had already found the answer.
