Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: The Sanctuary of Silver Stone

The sanctuary didn't look real.

Silver light spilled across the clearing like liquid moonfire, illuminating ancient stones carved with symbols older than any pack. The air hummed with quiet power — soft, steady, alive. The trees surrounding the clearing bowed inward, their branches forming a natural archway, as if guarding the place from the world outside.

Rylan helped me to my feet, his hands lingering on my waist longer than necessary. His eyes were wide, stunned, reverent.

"We made it," he whispered.

The bond pulsed — warm, steady, grounding.

I swallowed. "This place… it feels alive."

"It is," Rylan said. "The sanctuary is a living conduit of the moon's power."

Rowan and Kade emerged from the trees behind us, panting, soaked, and covered in mud.

Rowan glared at Rylan. "Next time you say 'take the river path,' I'm punching you."

Kade groaned. "I think I swallowed a fish."

Rylan didn't look away from the sanctuary. "You're lucky you made it at all. The river doesn't let everyone cross."

Rowan froze. "What do you mean?"

Rylan finally turned to him. "It only lets through those the moon deems worthy."

Rowan blinked. "So… we're worthy?"

Kade snorted. "Barely."

Rylan ignored them, turning back to the sanctuary. "We need to go inside."

I hesitated. "Inside what?"

He pointed to the largest stone — a towering monolith covered in glowing runes. "There's an entrance. Hidden. It only appears for the marked."

My stomach twisted. "So… me."

"And me," Rylan said softly.

The bond pulsed — warm, electric, intimate.

Rowan stepped forward. "What about us?"

Rylan shook his head. "You wait here."

Rowan bristled. "Absolutely not."

Kade crossed his arms. "Alpha Rylan is right. The sanctuary won't let us in."

Rowan glared. "I don't care. I'm not letting her walk into some ancient moon‑cave alone."

Rylan growled. "She's not alone."

Rowan shot back, "She's with you. That's worse."

Rylan's eyes flashed. "I'm the only one who can protect her in there."

Rowan stepped closer. "I've protected her since she was a pup."

Rylan stepped closer too. "And I'll protect her for the rest of her life."

The bond pulsed — hot, fierce, overwhelming.

I stepped between them. "Enough."

They both froze.

I looked at Rowan. "I'll be fine."

He clenched his jaw. "Lyra—"

"I trust him."

Rylan inhaled sharply.

Rowan exhaled slowly, shoulders dropping. "Fine. But if you're not back in an hour—"

"We will be," Rylan said.

Rowan glared. "I wasn't talking to you."

Kade muttered, "Gods, this is exhausting."

I turned to Rylan. "Let's go."

He nodded and took my hand.

The moment our fingers intertwined, the runes on the monolith flared brighter, shifting, rearranging themselves into a spiral of silver light.

A doorway appeared.

A soft, glowing archway carved from moonlight itself.

Rylan squeezed my hand. "Ready?"

I swallowed. "No."

He smiled faintly. "Me neither."

We stepped through.

Inside the Sanctuary

The air changed instantly.

Warm.

Still.

Silent.

The walls glowed with soft silver light, carved with ancient symbols that pulsed like a heartbeat. The floor was smooth stone, cool beneath our feet. The ceiling arched high above us, disappearing into darkness.

It felt like stepping into the moon's chest.

Rylan exhaled. "I haven't been here since I was a child."

I blinked. "You've been here before?"

He nodded. "My father brought me once. Before he died."

My chest tightened. "What did he say about it?"

Rylan's voice softened. "That the sanctuary reveals truth. And truth is rarely gentle."

A chill ran through me. "What truth?"

He looked at me. "Ours."

The bond pulsed — warm, steady, terrifying.

We walked deeper into the sanctuary, the runes glowing brighter with each step. The air grew warmer, thicker, humming with energy that made my skin tingle.

Rylan stopped suddenly.

I nearly bumped into him. "What is it?"

He pointed ahead.

A circular chamber opened before us, its center dominated by a pool of glowing silver water. The surface rippled gently, though no wind touched it.

Rylan whispered, "The Moonwell."

My breath caught. "What does it do?"

"It shows what the moon wants us to see."

I swallowed. "And what does it want us to see?"

Rylan hesitated. "The bond."

My heart pounded. "Rylan—"

He turned to me, eyes softening. "Lyra… I know you're scared. I know this is too much. I know I've made mistakes. But whatever the Moonwell shows us… we face it together."

The bond pulsed — warm, fierce, unbreakable.

I nodded. "Together."

We stepped toward the Moonwell.

The water brightened, swirling with silver light.

Rylan took my hand.

The bond surged.

The water exploded upward, forming a column of light that wrapped around us like a cocoon.

Images flickered inside the light.

Rylan as a child, watching his mother die.

Rylan's father collapsing under the weight of the curse.

Rylan alone, training, bleeding, breaking.

Rylan rejecting every bond, every connection, every chance at happiness.

Rylan seeing me for the first time.

Rylan fighting the bond.

Rylan giving in.

Rylan choosing me.

My breath hitched.

Then the images shifted.

Me as a child, running through Moonshadow territory.

Me training, fighting, surviving.

Me alone, always alone.

Me meeting Rylan.

Me denying the bond.

Me fearing it.

Me accepting it.

Me choosing him.

Rylan whispered, "Lyra…"

The light pulsed.

The images changed again.

Rylan and I standing together.

Rylan and I fighting Lucien.

Rylan and I glowing with moonlight.

Rylan and I leading two packs.

Rylan and I breaking the curse.

My heart pounded. "Is this… the future?"

Rylan shook his head. "No. It's a possibility."

The light dimmed.

The Moonwell stilled.

Silence fell.

Rylan turned to me, voice trembling. "Lyra… whatever happens next… I'm with you."

I swallowed. "And I'm with you."

The bond pulsed — warm, steady, certain.

Before either of us could speak again, the sanctuary trembled.

A crack split the air.

A voice echoed through the chamber.

Cold.

Sharp.

Familiar.

"You think the moon can hide you?"

Rylan stiffened. "Lucien."

The shadows seeped through the cracks in the stone.

Lucien's voice hissed, "You can't escape me."

Rylan pulled me behind him, claws glowing. "Stay back."

Lucien laughed. "The sanctuary protects the marked. But it doesn't protect the unworthy."

The shadows surged.

Rylan roared.

And the sanctuary doors slammed shut behind us.

We were trapped.

With Lucien.
