Chapter 30 - Chapter 30: The Game Isn't Over

Sirens cut through the night.

Loud.

Closing in fast.

Red and blue lights flashed across the river, reflecting off the broken dock and the fire still licking at the remains of the tunnels below.

Vivian didn't move.

She stood at the edge, staring into the dark water where Lucas had disappeared.

Gone.

Again.

Jamo watched her carefully.

"You need to move."

She didn't respond.

"They're almost here," he added.

Still nothing.

Jamo stepped closer.

"Vivian."

Her voice came out low.

"He didn't die."

Jamo didn't argue.

But he didn't agree either.

"He made a choice," he said.

Vivian nodded slowly.

"I know."

Her fingers curled at her sides.

"But that wasn't the end."

The sirens grew louder.

Vehicles screeched to a stop behind them.

Doors slammed.

Voices shouted.

The Directorate.

Or worse.

Jamo's body tensed.

"Now we move."

This time

Vivian listened.

They slipped into the shadows just as armed figures flooded the dock.

Black uniforms.

Black wolf skulls.

The Directorate.

Jamo's jaw tightened.

"They're sweeping the area."

Vivian glanced back once.

"They won't find him."

Jamo didn't respond.

Because he wasn't sure that was a good thing.

They moved fast, keeping low, staying out of sight.

But something felt wrong.

Too easy.

Too quiet.

Vivian felt it first.

That same pressure.

That same awareness.

Like something was watching her.

Not from the docks.

From somewhere deeper.

She slowed slightly.

Jamo noticed immediately.

"What is it?"

Vivian shook her head.

"I don't know… but it's still here."

Jamo's eyes scanned the shadows.

"We're not staying to find out."

They reached the edge of the dock area, slipping into a narrow alley that led back toward the city.

For a moment

It felt like they had made it.

Then

A voice echoed from the darkness ahead.

"Leaving so soon?"

They stopped.

Vivian's heart dropped.

"No…"

A figure stepped out of the shadows.

Calm.

Clean.

Untouched.

Like he hadn't just been dragged into darkness.

The man.

Alive.

Jamo's voice turned deadly.

"That's not possible."

The man smiled faintly.

"I told you."

Vivian's chest tightened.

"You were taken."

"Yes."

He dusted off his sleeve lightly.

"And returned."

Jamo stepped forward.

"You don't get to walk away again."

The man's eyes flicked toward him.

"You're still thinking small."

Vivian's voice sharpened.

"What are you?"

He looked at her.

Something almost like approval in his expression.

"I'm the one who finishes what others start."

Vivian shook her head.

"No. You're the one hiding behind everything."

The man smiled.

"And yet… you're still playing my game."

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Because deep down

She knew he was right.

Jamo didn't wait.

He attacked.

Fast.

Violent.

The man didn't move.

Didn't block.

Didn't even react

Until the last second.

Then he stepped aside effortlessly.

Jamo's strike hit nothing.

The man moved behind him in a blur.

"Predictable."

Jamo spun

Too late.

The man struck.

Jamo hit the ground hard.

Vivian moved instantly.

Knife in hand

But the man caught her wrist mid-strike.

Again.

Like it was nothing.

"Still choosing the direct path," he murmured.

Vivian's eyes burned.

"And still not dead."

That made him pause.

Just slightly.

Then

He smiled.

"Good."

He released her.

Stepped back.

Like he wasn't threatened at all.

Like none of this mattered.

Jamo pushed himself up slowly.

"You want something."

The man nodded.

"Yes."

Vivian's voice came sharp.

"Then say it."

He looked at both of them.

Then said the one thing neither of them expected.

"The war has already started."

Silence.

Jamo frowned.

"What war?"

The man's eyes darkened.

"The one beneath us."

Vivian's chest tightened.

"The creatures…"

He nodded.

"Just the beginning."

Jamo's voice dropped.

"You released them."

The man shook his head.

"No."

His gaze shifted slightly.

"You did."

That hit harder than anything.

Vivian stepped forward.

"That's not true."

"You destroyed the system," he said calmly.

"You broke containment."

Her stomach dropped.

"No…"

Jamo looked at her.

"What is he talking about?"

Vivian's mind raced.

The explosion.

The collapse.

The tunnels

She shook her head.

"I didn't know"

"That's the point," the man cut in.

Silence pressed in.

Cold.

Heavy.

Then

Another sound echoed.

Not sirens.

Not voices.

A deep, distant roar.

From beneath the city.

Vivian's breath caught.

"No…"

Jamo's eyes darkened.

"They're spreading."

The man smiled faintly.

"Exactly."

Vivian looked at him.

"You wanted this."

He didn't deny it.

"I needed a catalyst."

Her chest tightened.

"And I was it."

He stepped closer.

"Yes."

Jamo moved beside her again.

"We stop it."

The man tilted his head.

"You can try."

Vivian's voice sharpened.

"Where do we start?"

The man smiled.

"Now that…"

He stepped back into the shadows.

"…is the real game."

"Wait!" Vivian snapped.

But he was already gone.

Like he had never been there.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Unanswered.

The city around them felt different now.

Not safe.

Not controlled.

Alive.

Jamo looked at Vivian.

"This isn't over."

Vivian shook her head slowly.

"No."

Her eyes hardened.

"It's just starting."

But deep down

She knew something worse.

They hadn't stopped the enemy.

They had unleashed it.

And somewhere beneath the city

Something was waking up.

Something bigger than all of them.

Something that didn't play by rules.

And for the first time

Vivian didn't know if they could win.
