Keith refused to leave.
His jaw was clenched so tightly that the muscles along his face twitched with strain, and frustration burned visibly in his eyes as he stood inside Sarah's apartment. He had already been rejected, already been told to leave, yet he remained rooted to the spot as though simply refusing to move would somehow change reality.
"You can't do this to me, Sarah," he said, his voice growing rougher with every word. "You can't just break up with me like this. What's your reason? What did I do wrong? Tell me what I did."
Sarah slowly shook her head. She was exhausted. Everything hurt.
Her head pounded mercilessly, and the sharp ache behind her eyes felt as though someone was driving a nail into her skull. Raising one hand, she rubbed her temple and tried to steady herself. All she wanted was for Keith to leave. She wanted silence. She wanted peace. She wanted this nightmare to end. Instead, he kept pushing.
