The reality of what had happened was becoming impossible to ignore. One officer sat nearby and opened a notebook.
"Miss McKaley, could you tell us what happened?"
Sarah inhaled deeply. Then she began.
"I don't know exactly how it started."
Her voice sounded small.
"He grabbed me from behind."
The officer nodded.
"Go on."
"I think he was choking me."
The words made her stomach twist. She hated hearing them spoken aloud.
"I panicked."
Her hands tightened around the glass.
"I elbowed him as hard as I could and managed to break free."
The officer continued writing.
"Then what happened?"
"He chased me."
Sarah's breathing quickened slightly.
"Toward the elevators."
She glanced briefly at Jayden.
"And that's where I met Mr. Lin."
The officer followed her gaze. Then returned to his notes.
"Had there been problems between you and your ex-boyfriend before tonight?"
Sarah hesitated. A long silence followed. Finally, she shook her head.
"No."
