Chapter 16 - Chapter Sixteen.

Olivia hadn't expected it. She had prepared herself for danger, for strategy, for survival. But she hadn't prepared for the way her chest tightened when someone else even looked at Theodore the way she did.

It began during a routine council briefing. Theodore had summoned a small group of lieutenants to discuss a minor operation involving a rival family, and Olivia sat at the far end of the long, polished table. Theodore stood at the head, commanding the room with effortless authority. Olivia had spent months learning to read his subtle cues, the way his men followed without question, the way his gold eyes flickered with calculated thought. And she had begun to notice the small, deliberate touches: a hand brushing a shoulder, a commanding glance, a possessive stance that radiated ownership.

But today, something was different.

A subordinate named Marcus… young, ambitious, and annoyingly confident, had been recently promoted to oversee minor city operations. He was handsome, with sharp features and a cocky smirk, and he had clearly decided that Theodore's proximity was an opportunity for influence.

"You're really incredible, boss," Marcus said casually, leaning toward Theodore with a grin. "I've never seen anyone move men like you. The way you handle everything… it's… It's something else."

Theodore's lips twitched in his usual controlled expression, but his eyes, sharp and alert, never left the papers in front of him. Yet there was a subtle acknowledgment… a flicker of pride in his posture, a brief, approving nod. Olivia's stomach knotted.

She tried to focus on the operation details, the rival family's supply routes, weak points, potential ambush locations but every time Marcus spoke, her ears caught only the laughter in his voice, the way he lingered near Theodore. Her fingers clenched into fists under the table.

"You're distracted," Theodore said abruptly, his voice cutting through her spiraling thoughts. Olivia froze, caught red-handed. He glanced at her from across the room, gold eyes piercing. Not with anger, but with a quiet intensity that made her pulse jump. "Focus. This is not a social gathering. This is a strategy."

"Yes," she whispered, heart pounding.

Still, she couldn't shake it. Marcus was smiling, relaxed, confident, enjoying this brief moment in Theodore's orbit. Olivia felt an unfamiliar heat rise in her chest. She had seen men impressed by Theodore before, yes, but this… this was different. It wasn't just admiration. It was recognition of possession, of closeness… that Olivia herself had been claiming silently for months. And now, she realized, it was making her… jealous.

Theodore continued speaking, outlining the operation, his voice calm, authoritative. Olivia tried to focus on the tactical details, but her mind kept returning to Marcus's proximity, the way he laughed at a subtle joke, the way Theodore's gaze occasionally flicked to him, just enough for Olivia to feel the sting of insecurity.

After the briefing, the group broke into smaller discussions. Theodore moved toward Olivia, his presence filling the space beside her. He placed a hand lightly on her lower back… possessive, grounding. Olivia inhaled sharply, the tension coiling tighter inside her.

"You're tense," he said quietly, his warm breath brushing her ear. "Tell me what's bothering you."

Olivia hesitated, biting her lip. "It's… nothing," she murmured, but her eyes betrayed her. Theodore's gaze softened slightly, but his possessive intensity remained.

"Nothing?" he prompted, voice low, gold eyes flicking toward the lingering figures nearby.

Her throat tightened. She realized she couldn't lie, not to him, not really. "It's… him," she whispered, gesturing subtly toward Marcus. "I… I don't know why, but…" She trailed off, frustration and embarrassment mingling.

Theodore's lips curved faintly, a small, controlled smirk. "Jealous," he said simply, almost teasing, but there was an underlying edge of possession.

Olivia's cheeks flushed. "I… I didn't mean to…"

Theodore leaned closer, lowering his voice. "You have every right to be. He's… close, but he doesn't belong in my orbit. Not like you." His hand brushed against hers as he spoke, a subtle, possessive gesture that made her pulse jump. "This world isn't safe for anyone who gets in between what I claim."

The words struck her harder than she expected. Possession. Protection. Control. She realized she had been claiming him silently, just as he claimed her, and seeing someone else test that dynamic, even slightly…. ignited a fierce, protective instinct she hadn't anticipated.

For the first time, Olivia noticed how intertwined her feelings had become: respect, fear, fascination… and something deeper, something fiercely personal. She wanted Theodore's approval, his focus, and his attention entirely for herself. The jealousy that had gnawed at her wasn't petty, it was the first clear acknowledgment of her emotional attachment.

Theodore's eyes studied her, reading her reaction with ease. He didn't push her to confess, didn't need her words to understand the stirrings within her. He only gave her a small nod of approval, possessive and intimate, as if claiming her silently in the quiet of the hallway.

As they walked back to the car after the meeting, Olivia trailed slightly behind him, absorbing every detail: the way he moved, the silent authority he radiated, the way the men around him deferred to his presence instinctively. And now, for the first time, she realized she wanted more than observation. She wanted a place in that orbit… fully, exclusively.

"Olivia," Theodore said softly, breaking into her thoughts. She looked up, startled, and he smiled faintly, just enough to reveal a flash of emotion beneath the usual control. "You're learning quickly. But remember… the heart is just as strategic as the mind. Protect it. Guard it. And trust me to guard what I've claimed."

She swallowed, feeling the words settle deep in her chest. The possessiveness in his tone wasn't threatening… not here, not to her. It was grounding. It was claiming. And it stirred something fierce, protective, and undeniably personal in her.

By the time they returned to the estate, Olivia's mind was a swirl of emotions: admiration, fear, pride… and jealousy that burned brighter than she had ever felt. For the first time, she realized that her connection to Theodore wasn't just about survival or fascination with power. It was personal. Deeply personal.

And she wasn't sure if she was ready to face just how much.
