Chapter 29 - Chapter Twenty-Nine.

The estate was unusually tense that afternoon.

Olivia noticed it the moment she stepped into the main hallway.

People moved faster.

Security guards spoke in lower voices.

Even the staff seemed more alert than usual, their polite smiles slightly tighter as they passed through the corridors.

Something was happening.

Olivia paused near the staircase, watching two guards quietly reposition near the entrance.

Her instincts sharpened immediately.

A meeting.

An important one.

She could feel it in the air.

"Miss Olivia."

She turned as Marco approached.

Marco was one of Theodore's senior security officers… tall, composed, and always alert. Unlike the other guards, he carried himself with the quiet confidence of someone used to serious situations.

"Yes?"

"Mr. Theodore is in the council room."

Olivia raised an eyebrow.

"And?"

Marco hesitated slightly.

"There are… visitors."

That confirmed her suspicion.

"What kind of visitors?"

"Representatives from the Caruso family."

Olivia's curiosity ignited.

She had heard that name once before during a late-night discussion in Theodore's office.

Another powerful family.

Not exactly allies.

"Am I supposed to stay out of the way?" she asked.

Marco gave a neutral expression.

"That would be the safest option."

Olivia glanced down the corridor that led toward the council room.

Safety had never been the thing driving her curiosity.

"Thanks for the warning," she said.

Marco sighed quietly.

But he didn't try to stop her.

The council room doors were partially open when she arrived.

Voices drifted out into the hallway.

Sharp.

Controlled.

Olivia slowed her steps and stopped just near enough to see inside.

The room itself was massive… long table, tall windows, dark polished wood that made the entire space feel like a throne room for strategy rather than politics.

Theodore sat at the head of the table.

Relaxed.

One arm resting along the chair.

Completely calm.

Across from him sat three men Olivia didn't recognize.

Expensive suits.

Cold expressions.

The man in the center leaned forward slightly, speaking with the casual arrogance of someone used to power.

"You're expanding too quickly, Theodore."

His voice carried across the room.

"Territories that have been neutral for years suddenly fall under your control."

Theodore didn't react.

"Business evolves," he replied calmly.

"That's a convenient explanation."

The man beside the speaker chuckled lightly.

"Especially when it happens to benefit you."

Olivia leaned slightly closer to the doorway.

She could see the tension clearly now.

This wasn't a polite business meeting.

This was a test.

Theodore rested his fingers lightly on the table.

"And what exactly are you suggesting?"

The central man smiled thinly.

"That perhaps you're forgetting the balance between families."

"Balance."

Theodore repeated the word slowly, as if testing its weight.

"Yes," the man said.

"Caruso territory has existed peacefully alongside yours for years."

"And?"

"And sudden shifts can create misunderstandings."

Theodore tilted his head slightly.

"Are you threatening me, Mr. Caruso?"

The room went still.

The man's smile tightened.

"I'm reminding you that power is shared in this city."

Theodore leaned back in his chair.

For a moment, the silence stretched.

Then he laughed softly.

Not loudly.

Not angrily.

Just quietly amused.

Olivia felt a chill run down her spine.

Because the laughter didn't sound friendly.

It sounded dangerous.

"You think this is shared power?" Theodore said calmly.

Mr. Caruso frowned slightly.

"That's how it has always worked."

Theodore's golden eyes lifted slowly.

And when he spoke again

The room changed.

"Then you've misunderstood the situation."

The temperature in the room seemed to drop.

Theodore stood.

The movement was slow.

Deliberate.

Yet somehow it commanded the entire space.

Olivia watched as every guard in the room subtly straightened.

Even the Caruso men shifted in their seats.

"You see," Theodore continued calmly, walking around the table, "power in this city isn't shared."

His footsteps echoed softly against the polished floor.

"It's tolerated."

Mr. Caruso's expression hardened.

"That sounds dangerously close to arrogance."

Theodore stopped beside the table.

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"It sounds like reality."

The tension was suffocating now.

Olivia realized something in that moment.

Theodore wasn't raising his voice.

He wasn't threatening anyone.

Yet the entire room felt like it was bending around his presence.

"Your family has done well," Theodore said.

"Profitable trade routes. Stable operations."

He looked directly at Mr. Caruso.

"But don't mistake stability for power."

The words landed like quiet thunder.

Mr. Caruso's jaw tightened.

"You're making a mistake."

Theodore smiled slightly.

"No."

He turned toward the window briefly before speaking again.

"You're making one."

Mr. Caruso stood abruptly.

"You think you can intimidate us?"

Theodore looked back at him.

"I think you came here hoping to intimidate me."

Silence.

Then Theodore's voice dropped slightly.

"And now you're realizing that was a miscalculation."

Olivia felt her heart pounding.

She had never seen him like this before.

Cold.

Controlled.

Completely dominant.

Mr. Caruso hesitated.

Just slightly.

But Theodore noticed.

Of course he did.

"You came here to test my patience," Theodore continued calmly.

"But you forgot something important."

Mr. Caruso's voice was quieter now.

"What's that?"

Theodore stepped closer to the table.

"That patience," he said softly, "is not weakness."

The room was silent.

Heavy.

Mr. Caruso slowly sat back down.

The fight had left his posture.

"You've made your point," he muttered.

Theodore returned to his seat.

"Good."

The meeting ended shortly after.

The Caruso representatives left the room without another challenge.

Olivia stepped back from the doorway before they noticed her.

Her mind raced.

She had expected power in Theodore's world.

But she hadn't expected that.

The calm authority.

The effortless control.

The way an entire rival family had backed down without a single threat being spoken.

"Enjoy the show?"

Olivia jumped slightly.

Theodore stood behind her in the hallway.

She turned toward him.

"You knew I was watching."

"Of course."

She studied him carefully.

"You didn't seem worried."

"I wasn't."

Olivia exhaled slowly.

"They came to challenge you."

"Yes."

"And you dismantled them without even raising your voice."

Theodore shrugged slightly.

"Fear doesn't require volume."

Olivia looked at him with new understanding.

For the first time since arriving at the estate, she truly saw the scale of his influence.

The power.

The control.

And the quiet certainty that everyone in that room had recognized.

"You're terrifying," she said honestly.

Theodore smiled faintly.

"Only to my enemies."

Olivia met his gaze.

"And to everyone else?"

His golden eyes softened slightly.

"Hopefully," he said, "impressive."

Olivia couldn't deny it.

Because what she had just witnessed wasn't just leadership.

It was dominance.

And whether she liked it or not

A small part of her felt something dangerously close to admiration.
