When truth is leaked… those who fear it begin erasing themselves.
New York – Edward Lindsay's Office
Edward Lindsay stood before a screen displaying an urgent technical report.
A cybersecurity analyst spoke nervously:
"Part of the files recovered from Cross's office… were copied."
"How?" Lindsay asked in a quiet, lethal tone.
"There was an undocumented internal connection… after the files were transferred."
Silence.
Lindsay took out his phone.
Called Cross's division chief directly.
It wasn't a formal call.
It was brief.
"Review the server room cameras."
Pause.
"Now."
Oregon – Department Headquarters
The division chief stood in front of a surveillance screen.
The two federal agents beside him.
He replayed footage from earlier that evening.
Camera four
A shadow near the server room door.
Zoom in.
Clear.
Daniel Cross.
The agents exchanged a silent look.
"That's enough," one said.
The chief hesitated.
"But "
The voice from the phone speaker interrupted.
Lindsay.
"We don't need 'but.'"
A pause.
"The charge is ready."
And thanks to his influence
The accusation required little effort:
Unauthorized data extraction.
Collaboration with local gangs.
Abuse of authority.
One legal document
Enough to destroy a reputation.
Cross's Home – Hours Later
Daniel Cross sat at the dinner table with his wife.
Trying to appear normal.
His eyes distant.
The doorbell rang.
He checked the time.
Shared a glance with her.
Opened the door.
Two men in formal suits.
"Daniel Cross?"
"Yes."
"You are under arrest for collaboration with local criminal organizations and unlawful dissemination of classified information."
The air froze.
His wife stared at him in shock.
He asked calmly,
"On what grounds?"
"You'll be briefed at the facility."
They gave him a moment to retrieve his coat.
He leaned close to his wife and whispered:
"If anything happens… remember the name."
A brief pause.
"Edward Lindsay."
Then, unnoticed
He slipped a flash drive into her hand.
"And give this to whoever asks for its name… 'Back Door.'"
Her eyes filled.
"Daniel…"
He kissed her forehead.
Then left with them.
The door closed.
And in the darkness
Someone watched the house from a distance.
One Hour After the Arrest
The street appeared quiet.
But not entirely.
An unfamiliar car parked down the block.
Two men inside.
Watching.
Inside, Mrs. Cross sat gripping the small flash drive tightly.
A faint sound from behind the house.
She froze.
Then
A soft knock at the back door.
She didn't answer.
A whisper:
"Mrs. Cross… we don't have much time."
Her pulse spiked.
She approached slowly.
Opened the back door just slightly.
A man stood there.
Calm.
Alert.
"My name is Ian."
She stepped back.
"Don't come closer "
He raised his hands slowly to show he was unarmed.
"I'm not here to hurt you."
A pause.
"Daniel knows me."
She studied his eyes carefully.
"I'm here to help him. He left something for me. It can save him."
Her voice sharpened.
"Do you know the name of what he left?"
A brief pause.
Then
"Back Door."
Her resistance broke.
She slowly removed the flash drive from her pocket.
Handed it to him.
Then whispered:
"Edward Lindsay."
Ian frowned slightly.
"Who is that?"
"He told me to tell you that name."
She stepped closer.
"Please… tell me what's happening."
Ian answered without dramatics.
"Your husband touched the top of the pyramid."
A quiet gasp.
"Will they hurt him?"
He held her gaze.
"I won't let them."
He stayed only minutes.
Explained enough...without planting unnecessary terror.
"Daniel isn't guilty. He's dangerous to them."
She looked at the drive.
"He knew they'd come."
"That's why we're here."
Suddenly
A car rolled slowly past the house.
Ian glanced through the window.
The two men.
Watching.
He turned to her.
"Stay inside."
He moved quietly through the backyard.
Approached the car.
Yanked the door open.
Before either could draw
A precise micro-injection.
Then another.
The first man lost motor control.
The second tried to shout
But it came out as trembling laughter before fading into unconsciousness.
Ian dragged them out of sight.
When he returned inside, he said calmly:
"They'll wake up in an hour."
"But they won't remember clearly."
A brief pause.
"Leave this house tonight."
"To where?"
"You'll receive instructions."
He exited through the rear path.
A black car waited.
Inside
Derya Aksoy.
He entered.
She started the engine.
"Did you get it?"
He handed her the flash drive.
"Yes."
"And Cross?"
Ian looked once more at the house.
"Now… we extract him."
The car disappeared into the night.
Cross's Holding Location
Daniel Cross sat in a cold room.
Not an official station.
A transitional site.
One man leaned toward him.
"Cooperate… and this will be easier."
Cross smiled slowly.
Said nothing.
He knew the message had been delivered.
And that the back door…
Was open.
