Chapter 98 - Chpt 92: Toll of the First Layer

The victory over the Cryogonal Sentinel felt hollow the moment the adrenaline faded. The heat generated by Shelgon's "Thermal Overdrive" hadn't just melted the ice—it had created a steam-cloud that instantly flash-froze into a jagged frost on its shell.

Pokémon: Shelgon (Gold) Level: 52 Condition: Thermal Fatigue (Speed reduced by 20% until rested). Armor Status: Brittle. (Physical defense lowered due to rapid temp shifts).

"We're burning through energy too fast," Zeth whispered, his hands trembling as he applied a Super-Potion to the micro-cracks in Shelgon's armor. "The Gate isn't just fighting us; it's eating our stamina."

Kael, the Gate-Runner, was panting beside his Floatzel. "That... that wasn't a standard Sentinel, kid. This B-Rank is 'Resonant.' It's pulling energy directly from the Perfection-Stone at the bottom. We're basically fighting the mountain itself."

A soft click-clack echoed through the cavern. Lorelei's Level 58 Cloyster didn't attack. It hovered at the edge of the light, its shell half-open. It was watching them. It wasn't just a scout; it was a "Vulture." It was waiting for Zeth and Kael to clear the traps so it could save its energy for the final Floor.

"It's waiting for us to tire out," Zeth noted, his Aura-eye catching the technical precision of the Cloyster's breathing. "If we move to the next floor now, we'll be fighting the Second Layer traps and a Barrier-level Elite at the same time."

"So what? We camp?" Kael asked, looking nervously at the shifting violet walls.

"No. We set a trap."

Zeth didn't head for the elevator. Instead, he moved toward a narrow "bottleneck" passage leading deeper into the tundra of the First Layer.

"Ceruledge, Shadow Sneak—Merge!"

The Solid Gold knight (Lvl 38) emerged, its violet flames flickering weakly in the oppressive cold. It didn't stand guard; it sank into the shadow of a massive ice pillar near the passage entrance.

"Croagunk, use your neurotoxin on the floor. Freeze it over."

The Light Purple Croagunk (Lvl 47) spat a thick, viscous poison that Zeth then had Shelgon flash-freeze with a controlled breath. The result was a patch of "Black Ice"—invisible, slick, and coated in a paralyzing agent.

The Lvl 58 Cloyster took the bait. Seeing Zeth "retreat" into the bottleneck, it surged forward, its Skill Link ability already priming five Icicle Spears to end the hunt.

SHIII—

The Cloyster hit the Black Ice. Its momentum, usually its greatest asset, became its downfall. It skidded, its shell rotating wildly as it lost its center of gravity.

"Ceruledge, Night Slash—Focus the hinge!"

Ceruledge exploded from the shadow. Because it was Solid Gold, its technical accuracy was high enough to find the literal millimetric gap in the Cloyster's shell—the hinge. The blade, infused with spectral fire, slammed into the joint.

The Cloyster let out a high-pitched, metallic shriek. It wasn't defeated—a Level 58 Purple Tier has massive HP—but it was Grounded. One of its shell-flaps was jammed open, exposing the soft, vulnerable pearl inside.

"Floatzel, Aqua Tail!" Kael yelled, seizing the moment.

The Floatzel slammed the exposed pearl, sending the Cloyster tumbling back into the darkness of the cavern.

The Cloyster retreated, vanishing into the frost to recover. It wouldn't be back for an hour, but the cost to Zeth was high.

Ceruledge was shivering, its flames nearly extinguished by the contact with the Cloyster's sub-zero shell. Croagunk was coughing, its vocal sacs irritated by the Gate's thinning oxygen.

"We bought time," Zeth said, leaning against the cold wall. "But we've used 30% of our medicine, and we haven't even seen the Second Floor. Kael, if you have any 'Runner's Luck' left, use it now. We need to find a 'Safe Zone' pocket in the mana-flow before the next Sentinel spawns."

Zeth looked at his hand. The frost was starting to seep into his own skin. The B-Rank wasn't just a challenge—it was a war of attrition.

The bottleneck passage opened into a cathedral of translucent ice. In the center, a pool of liquid violet energy bubbled—a Mana-Spring. The air here was deceptively warm, saturated with the raw life-force of the Gate, but the silence was heavy with a predatory chill.

"Look at that glow," Kael whispered, his Floatzel (Lvl 51) tensing beside him. "One dip and our teams are back at 100%."

"Don't touch the water yet," Zeth commanded, his Aura-eye scanning the vaulted arches above.

From the ice-vaults, dozens of white, kimono-like silhouettes drifted down. Froslass. They didn't growl or hiss; they giggled—a sound like breaking glass.

[The Gate Wardens: Froslass Swarm]

Zeth's eyes glowed emerald as the status screens mapped the shared consciousness of the hive.

Pokémon: Froslass (Gate Warden) x12 Level: 48–52 Potential: Purple (Resonant) Abilities: Cursed Body / Snow Cloak Moves: Blizzard, Destiny Bond, Shadow Ball, Confuse Ray, Ice Shard. Current Status: Linked Spirits.

"They aren't just guarding the spring," Zeth realized, his breath hitching as he saw the faint, ethereal threads connecting the swarm. "They're a Cursed Hive. If we knock one out conventionally, the Destiny Bond will trigger a feedback loop through those threads. It'll drag the attacker down with it."

Kael gritted his teeth. "So we just stand here and freeze while the Mana-Spring is right there?"

"No. We use a technical bypass."

The cavern was a symphony of breaking glass as the Froslass Hive (Lvl 48–52) tightened its circle. Zeth knelt on the ice, his vision blurring from the Confuse Ray, but his hand moved to his belt.

"You think three is enough to hold a B-Rank Hive?" Zeth's voice was a low growl, his Aura flaring emerald to punch through the mental fog. "I'm not playing by the League's rules anymore."

He released his full active roster. The violet light of the Gate reflected off the flood of capsules opening at once, filling the ice cathedral with a heavy, pressurized presence. Zeth's eyes glowed as the System Data overlaid the battlefield.

"Rhydon, Earthquake—Low Frequency!" Zeth commanded.

The Deep Purple titan slammed its feet down. It wasn't a destructive quake; it was a rhythmic vibration designed to disrupt the Froslass's Snow Cloak, shaking them loose from the air.

"Charizard, Lunar Flame—Thermal Suppression!"

The Lunar Charizard (Lvl 57) erupted toward the ceiling. Its silver-violet flames consumed the energy of the frost itself. The fire created a localized "Heat-Well" that neutralized the Froslass's Ice-type moves while keeping the team from freezing.

"Armarouge, Wide Guard! Cloyster, Spike Cannon—Non-lethal pins!"

The Solid Gold knight stepped forward, its psychic shield absorbing the incoming Shadow Balls. Behind it, the Deep Purple Cloyster opened its shell. Because of Skill Link, it fired a relentless stream of spikes that acted like a physical wall, pinning the Froslass against the cavern ceiling.

"Houndoom, Sunny Day—Focus!"

The Light Gold hound channeled a miniature sun between its horns. The Froslass's spiritual link began to flicker and fray under the dual pressure of lunar fire and solar heat.

"Now! Croagunk, Venom Drench! Ceruledge, Night Slash the threads!"

The Light Purple Croagunk (Lvl 48) exhaled a massive cloud of sedative gas. Simultaneously, Ceruledge flickered through the shadows, its blades cutting the literal ethereal threads that linked the Froslass together.

By severing the connection before the gas took effect, the Destiny Bond had no path to travel back to Zeth's team.

One by one, the Froslass drifted to the floor, forced into a deep, chemical sleep. The Mana-Spring was finally clear.

"Kael, now!" Zeth gasped, his Aura receding as the mental strain hit him.

Kael stood frozen, looking at the eight powerhouses. "You're a one-man army, kid. That Charizard... it's like a ghost of the moon."

"It's the only way to survive a B-Rank," Zeth replied. He gestured to the spring. "Everyone, rotate in. We heal, we rest, and then we move to the Second Layer."
