Chapter 252 - Chapter 252: Attack and Defense

Shane Carter controlled the ball under his foot. Mario Gomez immediately lunged forward to press him. Behind the German striker, Franck Ribéry, Toni Kroos, and Arjen Robben were also pushing high. Bayern Munich's entire formation was stepping up to squeeze the space.

Shane had played against Bayern twice already this season, so he knew their characteristics perfectly. Since this was a final, their intensity was absolutely guaranteed. He calmly clipped a pass backward to center-back Diego Godín.

Godín trapped the ball, and Shane pulled away to offer a passing lane. But right at that moment, Robben suddenly accelerated. Godín instantly decided to clear the ball long, but he underestimated the Dutchman's explosive speed. The clearance slammed straight into Robben's outstretched leg and deflected out of bounds over the end line.

"Robben!" Martin exclaimed on the English broadcast. "Robben is looking incredibly fired up today, which is definitely not good news for Atlético Madrid."

Down on the touchline, Simeone clapped his hands loudly. He shouted at his players to stay calm and not let Bayern's aggressive press rattle them. Up in the stands, the Bayern fans roared in approval, pushing the stadium's atmosphere even higher.

Shane dropped deep into his own half. He positioned himself directly between Gomez and Robben, pointing at the grass to demand the ball from Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian goalkeeper actually hesitated for a second. He could clearly see Gomez, Robben, and Kroos hovering around Shane like starved predators. But Shane insisted, holding his ground and demanding the pass.

Gritting his teeth, Courtois played the ball short. A collective gasp swept through Wembley as three Bayern players immediately collapsed onto the American midfielder. Before they could close the trap, Shane flicked the ball with the outside of his boot. He executed a flawless half-turn, escaping the pressure, and immediately launched a soaring long pass up the pitch.

"Shane with the pass... finding Griezmann!" Martin shouted over the crowd. The ball completely bypassed the midfield, dropping perfectly into the path of the sprinting Antoine Griezmann. The Frenchman brought it down smoothly with his chest and drove into the right side of the penalty area. He pulled his leg back and fired a shot toward the near post.

Unfortunately, he was forced to shoot with his weaker right foot. The strike drifted just a few inches wide, slamming violently into the outside of the side netting. The visual illusion made the net ripple wildly. Thousands of fans in the stands gasped, genuinely believing the ball had gone in.

"Griezmann! Oh, that was incredibly close!" Gary analyzed on the broadcast. "What an unbelievable long ball from Shane Carter! It looks like Atlético's strategy is already crystal clear. They are aiming straight for the space behind the Bayern defense."

"With Bayern pressing so high, leaving space at the back is unavoidable," Martin agreed. "But look at Shane's vision and execution. He is completely fearless. He drew three players into a trap and then played a pinpoint pass out of the danger zone."

Griezmann clutched his head with both hands, deeply frustrated that he had missed such a golden opportunity. But he didn't forget the man who had created the chance. He turned back toward his own half and flashed a thumbs-up at Shane. In that exact moment, the lingering pre-match anxiety completely vanished from the Frenchman's mind.

Having played Bayern Munich twice in the group stages, Atlético knew exactly how the German champions operated. Bayern functioned as a relentlessly cohesive unit. When they had the ball, they pushed everyone forward to suffocate their opponents. When they lost it, they pressed with terrifying aggression, even hunting the ball down when it was passed back to the goalkeeper.

Atlético knew they could exploit the vast pockets of space left behind Bayern's aggressive high line. For the opening stages of the match, Costa and Griezmann were instructed to hover right on the shoulder of the last defender, ready to sprint at a moment's notice. Meanwhile, Shane clapped his hands, reorganizing the midfield block. "Stay focused on defense!" he commanded as Bayern reclaimed possession.

Bayern Munich obviously knew who Atlético's most dangerous weapon was. Shane's breathtaking long pass in the opening minutes only reinforced their pre-match defensive strategy. They committed to marking the American prodigy heavily. No matter where he drifted on the pitch, there was always at least one Bayern player shadowing him. The moment the ball moved toward him, the surrounding players would immediately collapse to form a cage.

Shane was completely unfazed by this kind of defensive attention. Almost every team in Europe tried to defend him exactly like this, so he didn't consider it a serious problem. There was no such thing as an impenetrable defense in football. If a defense seemed unbreakable, it simply meant the attacker wasn't skilled enough to break it.

To counter the heavy marking, Shane simply increased the tempo of his passing. He moved constantly, scanning the defensive shape and occasionally testing the waters with probing forward passes. On the defensive end, he anchored the midfield alongside his teammates, forming an iron wall to repel Bayern's attacks.

As the opening minutes ticked by, the match settled into a fierce, back-and-forth battle. Both teams traded attacking blows and defensive stops. The tempo of the game steadily accelerated as the physical intensity of the duels continued to climb.
