Chapter 176 - Chapter 176: System Termination

Messi stood at the penalty spot.

The broadcast lenses locked onto the Argentine's face. Sweat was streaming down his body. For Messi, the physical demands of this match had severely exceeded his normal parameters.

Historically, various media outlets had criticized Messi for a perceived lack of aggressive off-the-ball movement. But tactically speaking, for Barcelona, conserving Messi's stamina exclusively for sprints, dribbles, and shots was the optimal configuration. Messi was not built as an endurance monster. His stamina had a finite limit. Wasting his limited energy on extensive defensive coverage or low-value tracking runs was the definition of resource mismanagement.

However, because Barcelona had suffered a red card before the first half even ended, Messi had been forced to integrate heavily into the collective defensive effort, expending massive amounts of energy just to maintain structural stability.

And now, Barcelona's entire survival rested at his feet.

If they could score at the very beginning of the second half, hope would genuinely regenerate.

The noise of Camp Nou temporarily flatlined. A crisp, piercing whistle cut through the silence.

Messi took a deep breath, recalibrated his balance, and initiated his run-up. As he planted his final stride, his left foot struck the ball with violence.

Messi rarely used pure power for his penalties. But right now, his mind required an emotional purge.

BANG.

The ball rocketed directly into the upper-left corner. It was a spot Thibaut Courtois could not reach, regardless of his wingspan.

The moment the ball hit the net, Messi clenched his fists, released a roar, and immediately sprinted into the goal to retrieve the ball, accelerating back toward the center circle.

"Messi. A flawless penalty."

"Two to three. Barcelona re-establishes a viable position. With ten men, Barcelona claws back a goal."

"A brace for Lionel Messi."

In that moment, the entirety of Camp Nou detonated.

"MESSI. MESSI. MESSI."

The Barcelona fans in the stands initiated a frantic celebration. The entire stadium vibrated with the chant.

Shane Carter could feel the shift. Although it was only a penalty, it had undeniably regenerated Barcelona's momentum. He jogged to the center circle, transmitting a message to his surrounding teammates.

"They are trying to seize momentum. Do not give away possession cheaply. We need to bleed off their energy."

He was simply relaying the instruction. How they would execute it was entirely his burden.

The match resumed immediately. Upon kickoff, Barcelona pushed forward aggressively, initiating a ferocious, high-pressing system designed to instantly reclaim the ball and launch another attack.

Now, the burden shifted to Atlético to break the press.

Shane received the ball, passed it backward to the defensive line, and stretched the play wide. David Villa continued his forward pressing run. At that moment, Diego Godín locked eyes with Shane and passed him the ball.

Shane did not remain static. He accelerated toward the incoming pass. Tracking closely behind him was an aggressively pressing Alexis Sánchez. If Shane controlled the ball normally, Sánchez would immediately initiate contact. Then Barcelona's forwards would converge on him like wolves.

Shane denied them the opportunity. He projected the posture of a player unable to move the ball forward. Meeting the incoming pass, he executed a precise, one-touch return straight back to Courtois, while continuing his own backward movement to offer a secondary passing angle.

Courtois received the ball. The two center-backs widened their positions. Shane, his back turned entirely to the goal, continued dropping deeper.

This was Atlético's current defensive posture.

And Barcelona, a system globally renowned for its high press, instantly identified this as a critical vulnerability. A player receiving the ball with his back to goal was a major tactical error. It carried a statistically high probability of yielding a turnover.

And right now, Shane was actively raising his arm, demanding the ball.

In a localized moment, David Villa, Alexis Sánchez, Lionel Messi, and Andrés Iniesta all triggered pursuit vectors, converging directly on Shane's position.

Courtois, trusting his key player, passed the ball to his Number 10.

"Shane Carter." In the commentary box, Mario's voice began to rise with anticipation.

From his elevated angle, the moment Shane trapped the ball, he would be surrounded by four players. How was he going to escape?

"Shane." Mario murmured, analyzing the angles, before suddenly screaming. "FLAWLESS."

Under his eyes, Shane completely bypassed the trapping sequence. Instead, meeting the incoming ball, he used the inside of his right boot to execute a blind, one-touch sweeping pass directly over his own shoulder.

It was a solution Mario had never even considered possible.

"Flawless. Flawless execution." Mario slapped his workstation in absolute awe.

It was incredibly easy for tactical analysts to become Shane Carter fans. Because the moment the ball entered Shane's radius, you could guarantee he would do something that defied normal human parameters.

Exactly like this sequence. Without a single physical glance to gather visual information, operating with his back to the play, he executed a blind, diagonal long-range pass.

The ball bypassed Messi and landed perfectly in the left channel. Left-back Filipe Luís received it in complete isolation. Because Barcelona had over-committed their players to the central pressing trap, compounded by their existing one-man deficit, Filipe Luís was granted an unobstructed run to carry the ball forward.

Barcelona's high press had been cracked. Their players were forced to abort and execute a desperate, high-velocity retreat. During this transition, the structural integrity of their defense was barely holding together.

Shane did not remain at his position to admire his own work. The moment the pass was complete, he spun around, engaged maximum speed, and sprinted toward the attacking area.

He calculated the variables. This was the perfect moment to strike. As Barcelona's defense scrambled from a high press back into a low block, gaps and disorganization would inevitably appear. These were the precise openings he was designed to exploit.

Filipe Luís advanced the ball down the channel, crossing the halfway line, and immediately registered Shane arriving near the center circle. He passed the ball to Shane's feet.

Shane trapped it, pushed his body forward, and drove directly down the middle, broadcasting the intent of a solo frontal assault. Predictably, Barcelona's defenders processed the visual data exactly as he intended, collapsing inward to reinforce the center.

Shane dropped his right shoulder, shifting the ball from the center to a diagonal path toward the flank. He then lifted his eyes, scanning the middle.

At that moment, the decision-making of Barcelona's defenders splintered. Some committed to tracking Shane's lateral movement. Others remained anchored in the central zone. The entire defensive system dissolved into chaos.

And in the very first moment that chaos materialized, Shane delivered the terminal execution.

He aborted his dribble, planted his left foot, and whipped his right boot under the ball. The ball launched into the air, rotating violently on its axis. It traced an enormous, rainbow-like arc, tracking with lethal precision toward the far post of the penalty area.

The speed was extreme. The arc was massive.

At the far post, four Atlético players were converging on that exact spot. Staggered from front to back, Griezmann, Costa, Godín, and Filipe Luís.

"SHANE. INITIATES THE CROSS."

Amid Mario's frantic commentary, the ball descended to a point precisely one inch above Diego Costa's forehead. Costa executed a fractional leap, meeting the incoming ball with a brutal, driving header.

"COSTA."

As the broadcast grid erupted in synchronized shock, the ball hit the net once again.

Barcelona's newly regenerated momentum had been permanently terminated.
