Chapter 221 - Chapter 221: The Captain Without the Armband

The moment Lewandowski fired the ball into the net, Atlético Madrid's players froze in disbelief.

They hadn't expected it. After dominating the game for so long, a single counterattack from the opponent had turned into a goal.

But that was football. Nothing ever went perfectly from start to finish.

Shane Carter turned away in frustration and walked back toward the center circle. The worst-case scenario had arrived. Dortmund had scored. They now held two away goals. Atlético Madrid needed to score at least two more without conceding again to complete the comeback.

The replay told everyone the truth. This goal was identical to the earlier one that had been ruled offside. But this time, the referee let it stand.

"That's offside," Spanish commentator Mario groaned, clutching his head.

German commentator Schmitz saw it too. But he knew where he stood and simply said, "Dortmund are quite fortunate."

Viewers quickly realized from the replay that Lewandowski had indeed been offside. But on the pitch, Atlético's players couldn't see it. And even if they protested, it wouldn't matter. The referee wasn't going to overturn his decision. Not based on replays. There was no VAR.

No matter what, Dortmund were now ahead with two away goals in hand. For Atlético Madrid, everything had suddenly gone wrong.

Everyone felt Atlético had been unlucky. They had held the advantage. But with that goal, it had all vanished. Even if they equalized now, they would still be eliminated. More importantly, the goal had dealt a heavy blow to their morale.

Inside the Calderón, the atmosphere turned heavy. Atlético fans fell silent. Worry filled their eyes. Some clutched their heads, others stared blankly ahead. The situation was grim.

Some even began to wonder. Was this the end of their Champions League journey this season?

In the press box, a few journalists sighed.

"To be honest, reaching the semifinals is already a great achievement for Atlético."

"Exactly. This is their best run in the Champions League era."

"With a bit more reinforcement next season, a final isn't impossible."

The discussion spread quietly. Everyone could see it. Dortmund's counterattacks were lethal. Lewandowski's finishing was ruthless. And now, there were just over twenty minutes left. Atlético needed two goals without conceding again. On a Champions League semifinal stage, that was an enormous ask. At this level, there were no easy opponents.

"This season's final could very well be an all-Bundesliga clash," Schmitz said excitedly.

The cheers of Dortmund's traveling fans echoed across the Calderón.

When play resumed, Mario was still fuming.

"That was a clear offside! The assistant referee failed his duty. If Atlético go out because of this, it's a huge injustice. There will definitely be controversy after the match!"

Back in the United States, the ESPN studio was buzzing. The American broadcast had picked up the controversial call, and the analysts were dissecting it from every angle. The host shook his head.

"If Atlético are eliminated because of a wrong call, it will be a real shame. But this is football. Controversial decisions have always been part of its history."

The fans on social media clearly didn't agree.

"A wrong call is a wrong call. It's not part of football."

"That's why those teams became tragedies."

"Will Shane Carter become one too? They've been in such great form this season."

"Sometimes it just comes down to fate."

As soon as the match restarted, Klopp quickly sent his substitutes out to warm up. He needed to be ready. From here on, Dortmund held the advantage. As long as they didn't concede twice, they would go through. And Klopp believed that even if Atlético scored two, Dortmund could still strike again on the counter. He trusted his players completely.

The game quickly turned into a siege. Atlético Madrid pushed everyone forward. Dortmund dropped deep and tightened their defense. Shane moved laterally across the edge of the box, passing and probing, searching for space.

But there was very little to be found. That was only natural. With the lead secured, Dortmund's focus was razor-sharp. They weren't about to give Shane any easy passing lanes. Breaking them down through passing alone was going to be difficult.

Shane adapted immediately. After laying the ball off to Griezmann, he surged forward into the penalty area. Griezmann spotted the run and fed the ball in instantly.

Sven Bender and Gündoğan closed in from both sides. Shane used his strength to carve out space and bring the ball under control first. Still, they didn't let up. The two pressed forward together, blocking his path and forcing him to face away from goal.

As long as he couldn't turn and face the goal, the danger was limited. At least, that was their assumption.

Shane thought otherwise.

Sven Bender and Gündoğan were key shields in front of Dortmund's defense. By dragging them both into the box, it meant space had opened up outside. Shielding the ball, Shane suddenly flicked it backward with his heel.

The ball rolled to the top of the penalty arc.

At the same moment, Gabi had already surged forward. With all the attackers tightly marked, a late run from midfield was the unexpected option.

Gabi met the ball and struck it cleanly with his instep. The ball screamed toward goal.

The entire stadium rose, ready to explode.

But Weidenfeller flew across and pushed it out for a corner.

"Ahhhhh! Gabi!" Mario cried out. He had already been halfway into his goal call. But somehow, it had been saved.

On Dortmund's side, nearly every player rushed over to slap Weidenfeller on the shoulder. Atlético's players stood there, stunned. Gabi covered his face with both hands, unable to believe it.

And then a sharp clapping sound cut through the air.

It was Shane Carter.

"Heads up!" he shouted. "This proves their defense isn't unbreakable!"

After shouting to his teammates, he turned and raised his arms toward the stands.

The reaction was instant. Atlético's fans erupted. Songs rolled across the entire stadium. They hadn't given up.

The camera zoomed in on Shane. He wasn't wearing the captain's armband. But in that moment, he was unquestionably the team's leader.

The captain without the armband.

The previously dejected Atlético players slowly lifted their heads amid the roaring chants.

The match wasn't over. The fans hadn't given up. So how could they?
