Chapter 13 - The Seed Take Root

Five months after the Night of Broken Pacts

The compound had changed.

Gone were the cold marble corridors and rigid hierarchies that once defined Ironfang. Now vines of pale silver-green crept along the outer walls—plants that had never existed in Lagos before, blooming only under moonlight and releasing a soft, salty scent like the lagoon at dawn. Water features appeared without explanation: shallow reflecting pools in courtyards, thin channels running through hallways that carried fresh current even when the city pipes were dry. The pack called them "Elara's veins." No one dared call them anything else.

Inside the alpha suite—now shared without question—Elara stood naked before the full-length mirror that overlooked the lagoon.

Her body had changed too.

The silver veins no longer appeared only when she summoned power. They lived under her skin permanently now: delicate traceries curling around her breasts, down her ribs, pooling thicker at her lower belly and inner thighs like living tattoos. Her breasts were fuller, heavier. Her hips had widened just enough to make Kael's hands itch every time she walked past him. And low in her abdomen—barely noticeable to anyone else but impossible to ignore for her—a soft, warm pulse beat in perfect time with the bond.

She was three months pregnant.

The seed she had chosen from Aisha's palm had taken root faster than either of them expected.

Kael entered the room silently—barefoot, wearing only loose black pants that rode dangerously low on his hips. He stopped when he saw her reflection. His eyes darkened instantly—hunger, reverence, protectiveness crashing together.

"You're glowing again," he said, voice low and rough.

Elara met his gaze in the mirror. "It's not just the veins. It's… moving."

He crossed the room in three strides. Dropped to his knees behind her without a word. Pressed his forehead to the small of her back, hands sliding around to cradle the gentle swell of her belly.

The bond thrummed—stronger now, layered with a third heartbeat. Tiny. Fast. Alive.

Kael exhaled shakily against her skin. "Our pup."

Elara threaded her fingers through his hair. "Our child. Not just wolf. Not just river. Something new."

He kissed the base of her spine—slow, open-mouthed—then worked his way around to her hip. Nipped the silver vein that curved over her hipbone. She shivered.

"Does it hurt?" he asked against her skin.

"No. It feels… full. Powerful. Like the lagoon is living inside me."

His hands slid higher—cupping her breasts, thumbs brushing nipples that were darker now, more sensitive. She arched into his touch with a soft gasp.

"Kael…"

He rose slowly. Turned her to face him. Kissed her—deep, languid, tasting like storm and devotion. Then he guided her backward until the backs of her knees hit the edge of the bed.

"Lie down," he murmured. "Let me take care of you."

She did—reclining on silk sheets that smelled of both of them. Kael knelt between her legs, eyes never leaving hers. He started at her ankles—kissing, licking, working upward with maddening patience. When he reached her inner thighs he paused—nuzzled the soft skin there, inhaled deeply.

"You smell different," he growled softly. "Richer. Sweeter. Like rain-soaked earth and moonlight."

Elara's breath hitched. "Pregnancy hormones. Or the seed. Or both."

He parted her gently with his thumbs. Looked his fill—her folds already slick, swollen, glistening. Then he lowered his head and licked one long, slow stripe from entrance to clit.

Elara's hips bucked. A moan tore from her throat.

He didn't rush.

He worshipped.

Slow circles around her clit. Gentle suction. Tongue dipping inside her—tasting her, drinking her. Fingers sliding in alongside—two, then three—curling to stroke that spot that made her see stars. When she came the first time it was quiet—body trembling, thighs clamping around his head, silver light flaring along her veins like bioluminescence.

He didn't stop.

He brought her again—harder this time—sucking her clit while his fingers pumped steadily. She cried out his name, fingers twisting in the sheets, back arching off the bed.

Only then did he rise above her.

Cock thick, heavy, veins standing out, head flushed dark and leaking. He braced on one arm—careful not to put weight on her belly—and notched himself at her entrance.

"Tell me if it's too much," he rasped.

She wrapped her legs around his waist. Pulled him closer.

"Never too much."

He sank in slowly—inch by inch—watching her face the entire time. When he was fully seated they both groaned—deep, primal sounds. The bond sang—golden threads weaving with silver currents and now a faint third color: soft emerald-green, pulsing from her womb.

He began to move—long, rolling thrusts that dragged every ridge along her walls. Deep enough to kiss her cervix, shallow enough to tease her entrance. She met him stroke for stroke—hips rolling, nails digging into his shoulders, reopening old marks.

"Harder," she whispered.

He obeyed—thrusts turning sharper, faster. The bed creaked. Their skin slapped wetly. Sweat slicked between them. He leaned down—took one nipple into his mouth, sucking hard while his hips snapped forward. She keened—high, desperate.

The third heartbeat fluttered faster—responding to their rhythm, to their pleasure.

Kael lifted his head. Eyes glowing amber-gold. "I can feel it," he growled. "Our pup. Feeling us. Feeling this."

Elara's eyes filled with tears—not pain, but overwhelming love.

"Then let's show them how loved they are."

He fucked her through another orgasm—her walls fluttering, milking him. Then another—until she was trembling, oversensitive, begging.

When he finally came—deep, pulsing, filling her until it leaked out around him—he buried his face in her neck. Growled her name like a prayer. Bit down gently over her claim mark—reaffirming, not breaking skin.

They stayed locked together for long minutes—panting, hearts slowing in unison with the tiny one between them.

When he finally eased out—both groaning at the loss—he gathered her close. Spooned behind her. One hand splayed protectively over her belly.

The lagoon outside glowed softly—approving.

But the peace didn't last.

At 3:17 a.m., the compound alarms shrieked.

Kael was out of bed in a heartbeat—shifting mid-stride into ebony wolf. Elara followed—silver-black fur flowing over her pregnant form, protective instinct overriding everything.

They burst onto the terrace.

The lagoon was boiling.

Not with heat—with darkness.

Black-red tendrils rose from the water—thick, oily, pulsing like veins. They reached toward the compound walls, probing, searching.

In the center of the lagoon, a shape began to form.

Massive. Serpentine. Eyes like burning coals.

The thing that had woken beneath Apapa—the black well's true master—had finally surfaced.

A voice rolled across the water—not sound, but pressure inside their skulls.

The seed has taken root. The balance demands payment. Give me the hybrid… or I will take the city instead.

Elara's wolf snarled—deep, maternal fury.

Kael pressed against her side—fur bristling, amber eyes blazing.

The pack gathered below—howling in defiance.

Elara shifted human—naked, silver veins blazing brighter than ever, hand cradling her belly.

She stepped to the terrace edge.

"Look at me," she called across the water.

The serpent-thing turned its burning gaze on her.

"I chose the seed," she said, voice carrying on unnatural wind. "I carry the hybrid. And if you want it—you'll have to go through me. Through us. Through every wolf on this shore."

The creature hissed—sound like grinding stone.

Then the black-red tendrils surged—straight for the compound.

Kael roared—leaping from the terrace, shifting mid-air into a massive ebony blur.

Elara summoned the current—silver light exploding outward, meeting darkness head-on.

The night ignited.

War had returned.

But this time, they fought not just for a pack.

They fought for a future.

For the child growing inside her.

For the hybrid line that would either save Lagos… or doom it.

And somewhere in the depths, the ancient thing smiled.

Because the game had only just begun.
