Chapter 1 - Late Afternoon Light

A small village in West Bengal by the river, fields full of flowers, dirt roads, and the reddish evening sky.

Ishita has come from the city to the village to her uncle's house. A little away from the hustle and bustle of the city, to spend some time in peace.

On the first day, she went out for a walk on the riverbank.

There, she bumped into a boy.

The boy had a book in his hand, a sling on his shoulder.

A calm smile in his eyes.

Sorry, the boy said.

Ishita was a little annoyed and said,

"Can't you walk by sight?"

The boy smiled and said,

You were also walking by sight.

Ishita noticed for the first time a strange depth in the boy's eyes.

His name is Ayan.

Over the next few days, they started meeting in strange ways.

Sometimes by the river,

sometimes in the market,

sometimes in front of the school.

Ayan is a primary school teacher in the village.

Ishita came to know Ayan has grown up in this village since childhood.

His dream to change the village.

One afternoon Ayan said,

"When you go back to the city, will you remember this village?

Ishita remained silent.

Because she understood

More than the village, you will remember someone.

One day, it suddenly rained.

The field was wet.

The river water was swollen.

Ishita was stuck in the middle of the road without an umbrella.

Ayan ran and held the umbrella over her head.

The two were very close.

Ishita felt, her heartbeat mixed with the sound of the rain.

Ayan said slowly,

If you go to the city… you won't forget me, right?"

Ishita's eyes got wet.

Time passed very quickly.

The day of Ishita's return arrived.

The station was small.

The sound of the train coming was coming from a distance.

Ayan stood quietly.

Ishita said,

"Will you ever come to the city?"

Ayan smiled softly and said,

"My city is here."

The train arrived.

Ishita sat up.

Before the train left, she looked out the window and saw

Ayan was standing, with a strange peace in his eyes.

The train started moving.

Ishita suddenly made a decision.

She got off.

Everyone was surprised.

She ran and stood in front of Ayan.

"I am not returning to the city."

Ayan was surprised

You mean?

Ishita smiled,

I have found my city.

Ayan didn't say anything.

Just held her hand tightly.
