Chapter 57 - The Silent Observer

The rain just would not stop. Water kept sliding down the windows of Aurora Café. It made the city lights all blurry and streaky like they were made of gold and silver. Upstairs there were people.. Downstairs beneath the café Aria sat all alone in the command center. There were dozens of monitors in front of her. They cast weird shadows on her face. She had not slept in a while. Every time she thought she was getting close to figuring something out she ended up back at the impossible conclusion. Someone had known about her for a time even before Dark Nexus existed. Someone had been watching her waiting for her and getting ready for her. Now they were finally making their move.

A new message popped up on her screen. Aria opened it. There was nothing there. Just a black screen with no text, no code and no signature. Something about it made her stomach feel all tight and weird. The message felt like someone knocking on a door reminding her that someone was there watching her and waiting for her to respond. Aria leaned back slowly in her chair. Whispered, "Who are you?" The screen just stayed dark.

For a seconds nothing happened. Then a single line appeared on the screen: HELLO, ARIA. Every muscle in her body got all tense. Not because of the words. It was because of her name. Nobody inside Dark Nexus ever called her Aria, not in the system not. She tried to stay calm and typed, "Show yourself."

The cursor on the screen blinked a times and then another sentence appeared: YOU'VE GROWN BEYOND EXPECTATIONS. Aria got a chill down her spine. The words bothered her. They felt more like someone was evaluating her not admiring her. It was like a scientist talking about an experiment or a teacher talking about a student. Arias fingers hovered over the keyboard. She typed, "You've been monitoring me."

There was a pause. Then the response came: YES. There was no denial, no hesitation, the truth. For some reason that made it worse. Arias jaw got all tight. She typed, "Since when?" The response came away: SINCE THE BEGINNING. Arias heartbeat. She wondered what that meant. The beginning of what? The fire? Her rescue? Something before that? She had a lot of questions. They were all crashing through her thoughts. For years she thought her life had been all chaotic and unpredictable. Now she was not so sure. The idea that someone had been watching her every step felt really unsettling.

A new message appeared on the screen: YOU ARE ASKING THE QUESTIONS. Aria. Typed, "Then enlighten me." The cursor. Then the response came: YOU SHOULD BE ASKING WHY YOU WERE CHOSEN. The word "chosen" hit her hard. She realized that there had always been gaps in her life moments that never quite fit. There were coincidences that felt too convenient and resources always seemed to appear when she needed them. At the time she thought it was because of her intelligence and determination but now she was not so sure. Uncertainty was creeping into places she had never allowed doubt to enter

Across the room another monitor. Aria saw that Dark Nexus had detected some movement in the Aurora District down at street level. She switched screens. Saw Dante walking alone with no tactical team and no visible backup. Just him, studying the district again getting closer and closer. The anonymous user noticed the shift in her attention away and a new message appeared: YOU CARE ABOUT HIM. Aria stared at the screen then scoffed and typed, "You're making assumptions." The reply came instantly: I'M OBSERVING PATTERNS.

For the time Aria felt some genuine irritation and she typed, "You don't know anything about me." The answer came slowly and deliberately: I KNOW MORE THAN YOU THINK. There was a uncomfortable silence in the room and Aria felt like the stranger was not threatening her or blackmailing her but somehow that felt more dangerous. They were calm, patient and confident like they already knew how this would all end.

Meanwhile miles Lucien sat alone in his apartment staring at the device Viktor had given him. It had a green light blinking steadily and he should have just ignored it.. Curiosity had turned into obsession and he activated the connection. At first nothing. Then encrypted files started appearing on the screen. There were names, dates, financial records and communication logs all pieces of information that seemed unrelated at first. Lucien leaned in closer his eyes narrowing. He felt like there was something hidden in the data, something important. He needed answers desperately.

Back, beneath Aurora Café Aria rose from her chair feeling like the conversation was getting nowhere. She typed, "Games. If you've been watching me all these years tell me what you want." For a seconds there was no response and then the stranger typed: I WANT TO SEE WHAT YOU BECOME. Arias expression. She typed, "That's not an answer." The response came: IT'S THE ONE THAT MATTERS.

The screens. Every monitor flashed simultaneously. For a moment dozens of hidden files appeared, archives, videos, photographs and records thousands of them. Then they vanished, gone before Aria could even access any of them. She stepped forward sharply. Whispered, "No." Her fingers flew across the keyboard as she tried to recover the data track the source and capture the transmission. But the stranger had already disappeared, leaving behind one final message: WE WILL SPEAK AGAIN SOON. Then that vanished too.

The silence that followed felt heavy and uncomfortable. The command center seemed larger and colder. Aria stared at the screen feeling something she rarely experienced: vulnerability. Someone had entered her world learned her secrets and touched the foundations of Dark Nexus itself. She still had no idea who they were. She knew that a new game had begun. Somewhere in the shadows an invisible player had just made their move. The rain just kept tapping against the café windows unaware of the whole thing.
