Chapter 173 - The Dust Lurker

The Coliseum was packed.

Aurelion stood in the preparation chamber, watching the crowd filter into the massive arena through a holographic display. Thousands of beings filled the seats—some humanoid, others decidedly not. Their voices were a low roar of anticipation, echoing through the stone walls.

He looked down at his equipment.

The hard-light shield was strapped to his forearm—a sleek, silver device that hummed with contained energy. When activated, it would project a barrier of solid light, capable of deflecting attacks. He had tested it briefly in the preparation chamber. It worked.

The sword was even more impressive. Its blade was made of plasma, shimmering with contained heat. It hummed when he moved it, leaving trails of light in the air. The hilt was comfortable in his hand, balanced and responsive.

"Your first match is about to begin," a voice said from behind him.

Aurelion turned.

A being in ornate robes stood at the entrance to the chamber. It had four arms and a face that seemed to shift between expressions.

"Follow me," it said.

Aurelion followed.

The tunnel was dark, narrow, and sloped upward. Aurelion walked through it, his footsteps echoing on the stone. The sounds of the crowd grew louder with each step.

He emerged into the arena.

The light was blinding—a massive dome overhead, its surface glowing with artificial sunlight. The arena floor was vast, covered in sand and scattered with debris. The seats rose in tiers around it, filled with beings from countless worlds.

And in the center of the arena, the creature waited.

The Dust Lurker was massive—easily twice the size of a horse, its body low to the ground, supported by four thick, clawed legs. Its skin was dark, glistening, covered in patches of corrosive acid that dripped onto the sand. Its head was a nightmare of sharp teeth, and from its mouth, a long, forked tongue slithered like a snake.

But the worst part was its tails.

Three of them, each one ending in a sharp, stinger-like tip. They moved independently, swaying back and forth like serpents, always watching.

The announcer's voice boomed through the arena.

"LADIES AND BEINGS! WELCOME TO THE COLISEUM!"

The crowd roared.

"TODAY, WE HAVE A SPECIAL TREAT FOR YOU! A NEW FIGHTER! AN OFFWORLDER! A BEING WHO CLAIMS TO HAVE FOUGHT DEMON KINGS AND BLACK HOLES!"

The crowd laughed.

"WILL HE SURVIVE HIS FIRST MATCH? OR WILL THE DUST LURKER CLAIM ANOTHER VICTIM?"

The creature hissed, its tongue flicking through the air.

"LET THE MATCH BEGIN!"

Aurelion activated his shield.

The hard-light barrier materialized on his forearm, shimmering with pale blue light. He raised his plasma sword, its blade humming with contained heat.

The Dust Lurker attacked.

It moved faster than he expected.

The creature lunged forward, its claws tearing through the sand. Aurelion sidestepped, bringing his shield up. The creature's claws scraped against the hard-light barrier, sparks flying.

It hissed, recoiling.

Then it shot acid.

The corrosive liquid erupted from its skin in all directions, a spray of deadly droplets that filled the air. Aurelion dove behind his shield, the acid sizzling against the barrier. He could feel the heat through the shield, the energy struggling to hold.

He rolled, came up swinging.

His plasma sword carved through the creature's side, leaving a smoking gash. The creature screeched, its tails lashing out. One of them caught him across the chest, throwing him backward.

He hit the ground hard.

"OOOH! THE OFFWORLDER TAKES A HIT! WILL HE RECOVER?"

Aurelion pushed himself up, ignoring the pain. The creature was advancing, its claws scraping against the sand.

He attacked.

This time, he moved differently—using his speed, his agility. He ducked under the creature's claws, rolled past its tails, and drove his sword into its flank.

The creature screamed.

Then it sprayed acid again.

Aurelion jumped, using the momentum to flip over the creature. He landed behind it, his sword already swinging. The blade carved through one of its tails, severing the stinger.

The creature roared.

"ANOTHER HIT! THE OFFWORLDER IS PUTTING UP A FIGHT!"

Aurelion didn't stop.

He moved in a blur, his sword finding gaps in the creature's defenses. He carved through its legs, its body, its remaining tails. The acid sprayed wildly, but he dodged, rolled, kept moving.

The creature was slowing.

It was bleeding from a dozen wounds, its movements sluggish. Its tongue lashed out, wrapping around Aurelion's arm. He felt the acid burn against his skin.

He didn't stop.

His sword carved through the tongue, severing it. The creature screamed—a horrible, wet sound.

"THE OFFWORLDER CUTS OFF ITS TONGUE! THIS IS INCREDIBLE!"

Aurelion drove his sword through the creature's head.

The Dust Lurker collapsed.

The crowd went silent.

Then—

They erupted.

The roar was deafening—thousands of beings screaming, cheering, stomping their feet. The announcer's voice boomed through the arena.

"AN INCREDIBLE VICTORY! THE OFFWORLDER HAS DEFEATED THE DUST LURKER!"

Aurelion stood in the center of the arena, his chest heaving, his sword still humming. The creature lay at his feet, its body dissolving into ash.

K-7 appeared beside him.

"That was an excellent performance!" the robot chirped. "You have earned a substantial amount of currency!"

Aurelion looked down at his arm. The acid burn was already healing, the shards beneath his skin pulsing with light.

"Yeah," he said. "That was something."

Aurelion walked toward the exit.

The crowd was still roaring, their voices a deafening wave of approval. He could feel their eyes on him, their excitement, their hunger for more. He had given them a show. He had survived.

But as he walked, something stopped him.

An idea.

A sly smile spread across his face.

He turned.

The crowd's roar faltered, confused. The announcer's voice echoed through the arena.

"Is... is the offworlder coming back? What is he doing?"

Aurelion walked to the center of the arena. He raised his plasma sword, pointing it at the announcer's booth. The blade hummed with contained heat, casting a pale glow across his face.

"I have a title," he said.

His voice carried across the arena, amplified by the Coliseum's speakers. The crowd fell silent.

The announcer's voice was hesitant. "A title?"

"Yes." Aurelion's smile widened. "I am known by many names. I have fought in wars beyond your comprehension. I have faced gods and demons. I have killed beings that would make your Dust Lurker look like a pet."

He paused, letting the words sink in.

"And I have earned a title."

The crowd leaned forward, captivated.

"What is your title?" the announcer asked.

Aurelion lowered his sword, pointing it at the ground. His voice was low, steady, absolute.

"I am the Demon King."

The arena was silent.

Then—

The crowd erupted.

It was different from before. Louder. Wilder. The beings in the stands were screaming, cheering, pounding their fists against the railings. The name echoed through the Coliseum like a battle cry.

"DEMON KING! DEMON KING! DEMON KING!"

The announcer's voice was almost trembling. "The Demon King! The offworlder has revealed himself as the Demon King! What an incredible revelation!"

Aurelion stood in the center of the arena, his sword still raised, his smile still in place.

He had given them a show.

He had given them a legend.

And now, he had a reputation.

He walked out of the arena, the cheers still echoing behind him.

K-7 met him at the exit.

"That was an unexpected development," the robot said.

Aurelion shrugged. "I needed a name. Something that sticks. Something that makes them remember me."

"It will certainly achieve that effect."

"Good." He stretched his arms. "Now, about that currency you mentioned..."

K-7 beeped. "You have earned a substantial amount. Enough for lodging, food, and supplies for approximately two days."

Aurelion blinked. "Two days?"

"Two days," the robot confirmed. "The Coliseum pays well, but the cost of living in this city is high. You will need to fight regularly to sustain yourself."

Aurelion stared at K-7.

"Two days," he repeated flatly.

"Yes. You will need to win your next match to secure additional funds."

Aurelion sighed. "Of course I will."

"Would you like me to find suitable lodging?"

"Yeah. Yeah, let's do that."

They walked through the city, the cheers of the Coliseum still echoing in the distance.

Aurelion shook his head.

"Two days," he muttered. "I killed a giant acid monster for two days of rent."

K-7 beeped. "It was an impressive victory, however. The citizens will remember you."

"Great. I'll be remembered as the guy who fought a monster for two days of food."

"That is still a significant achievement."

Aurelion sighed again. "Let's just find a place to sleep."
