Daniella's heart thumped loudly in her chest. She nodded mutely, gripping the blanket tighter until her fingers ached. The nurse helped her lie back on the bed, guiding her hands to rest on the cool sheet. "Take deep breaths," she instructed gently. "I know this may feel intimidating, but everything we do is routine and safe."
Routine. Safe. The words rang hollow in Daniella's ears. Her eyes flicked nervously toward Santiago, who offered no soothing words, no hint of reassurance, only that calm, intense watchfulness that made her pulse race even faster.
"Stay still. Cooperate," Santiago said quietly from the couch, his voice cutting through the tension like a blade wrapped in silk. "Nothing happens if you follow instructions."
Daniella's breath hitched.
