Whispers Beneath the Black Tide

Page 1 – The Map of Ashes

The storm rolled over the cliffs of Raven's Edge like a living thing. Waves crashed violently against the jagged rocks, and lightning cracked open the sky above the forgotten lighthouse.

Elena Marrow clutched the old parchment map tighter as rain soaked through her coat. The map had belonged to her father—an explorer who vanished years ago while searching for an island rumored to rise from the sea only during the blood moon.

"Storm's getting worse!" shouted Daniel Cross, her childhood friend, now a marine archaeologist. His voice nearly disappeared in the thunder.

They weren't alone. Professor Adrian Vale, a historian obsessed with lost civilizations, stood near the lighthouse door, staring out at the raging sea with unsettling calm.

"The tide will reveal it tonight," Adrian said. "Black Hollow Island. And whatever your father found there."

Elena's heart pounded—not just from fear, but from the strange closeness she felt standing beside Daniel. Years apart had changed him. He wasn't just the boy who once held her hand when she feared the dark.

He was the only thing keeping her grounded now.

Lightning struck the sea—and in that flash, something rose from the water.

An island.

Dark. Jagged. Waiting.

Their boat cut through violent waters toward the newly surfaced landmass. The air grew colder as they approached. No birds circled overhead. No sound of life stirred.

The island smelled of salt and something metallic—like blood.

They docked on black sand. Strange symbols were carved into towering stone pillars. Adrian's eyes gleamed.

"It's older than we imagined," he whispered.

As they ventured inland, the forest seemed wrong. Trees twisted unnaturally. The wind sounded like whispers.

Elena froze.

"Did you hear that?"

Daniel nodded. "Someone said your name."

The ground trembled. Behind them, the path vanished. The forest had shifted.

They were trapped.

That night, they took shelter inside ancient ruins at the island's center. In the moonlight, Elena found a carving on the wall—her father's initials scratched beside a warning:

The island feeds on fear. It knows your heart.

A scream shattered the silence.

Adrian was gone.

Only blood remained.

Daniel and Elena ran through the ruins, lantern shaking in his hand.

"Adrian!" Daniel called.

A low growl echoed from the shadows.

Something moved along the ceiling—too fast, too fluid. Elena gasped as a pale creature dropped in front of them. Its limbs bent backward, eyes hollow and endless.

It spoke in a broken whisper.

"Elena…"

She staggered backward. "It knows me."

Daniel stepped in front of her. "Stay behind me."

More shapes crawled from the darkness. The creatures didn't attack immediately. They circled.

The island was watching.

Suddenly, Adrian emerged from the shadows—but he was wrong. His eyes were pitch black.

"You shouldn't have come," he rasped.

The creatures retreated as he approached.

"The island grants immortality," Adrian continued. "But it requires devotion."

He lunged.

Daniel tackled him, and they crashed into stone columns. Elena grabbed a fallen torch and thrust it toward the creatures. Flames roared, and the monsters shrieked.

Fire hurt them.

Daniel broke free, grabbing Elena's hand. "Run!"

They fled deeper into the ruins—toward a glowing chamber beneath the earth.

Page 4 – The Heart of the Island

At the center of the underground chamber stood a pulsating black crystal embedded in stone.

It beat like a heart.

Daniel stared in horror. "This is what's controlling everything."

Elena stepped closer, memories flooding her mind—her father speaking of power buried beneath the sea.

Adrian staggered into the chamber, half-human, half-shadow.

"Destroy it," he growled painfully. "Before it takes you too."

For a moment, his real voice broke through.

The creatures closed in from every tunnel.

Daniel turned to Elena. His hand trembled as he cupped her face.

"If we don't make it—"

She kissed him.

It wasn't fear.

It wasn't desperation.

It was everything they had never said.

"I'm not losing you again," she whispered.

Together, they lifted a fallen pillar and drove it into the crystal.

The chamber shook violently. The creatures screamed in agony. Adrian smiled faintly before dissolving into ash.

The island began to collapse.

Page 5 – Beneath the Dawn

They ran as the ground split apart. The sea surged back toward the island.

Just as the cliffs crumbled, Daniel pulled Elena onto the boat. They rowed with desperate strength as Black Hollow Island sank beneath the waves.

Silence fell over the ocean.

The storm vanished.

Only the lighthouse remained in the distance.

Elena collapsed into Daniel's arms, shaking—not from cold, but from survival.

"It's over," he whispered.

But as dawn broke across the horizon, Elena noticed something in the water beside the boat.

A shard of black crystal floated near the surface.

And beneath it—

Something moved.

Daniel wrapped his arms around her, unaware of the shadow rising below.

Elena closed her eyes, holding him tighter.

Because love can survive horror.

But some adventures never truly end.
