The next morning arrived with soft, golden sunlight spilling over the rooftops of Brooklyn. No rain. No cold wind. Just a quiet, ordinary day — the kind most people spent without a single thought about war or empire.

But for Leo Carter, ordinary days no longer existed.

He arrived at Sunshine Wash just as Jake was wrestling a large cardboard box of spare parts through the front door, huffing and grunting under the weight.

"Boss! I come bearing gifts! And by gifts, I mean… very expensive washing machine guts. You're welcome!"

Leo stepped over to help him lift the box onto the empty folding table they'd dragged in the night before. Inside were belts, gears, hoses, coin mechanisms, and small electronic boards — everything needed to fully resurrect the dying laundromat.

Leo checked his bank balance mentally. The $15,000 startup fund had taken a noticeable hit, but he didn't care.

Every dollar spent here was a nail in the Morgan Group's coffin.

"Let's start with the back row," Leo said, pulling out a screwdriver. "Those machines have been broken the longest. Once they run, we can hit full capacity."

Jake saluted and immediately grabbed a tool, his usual chaotic energy focused into genuine effort. "You got it! I'll fix these machines faster than Derek can buy fancy watches. …Okay, maybe not that fast, but still fast!"

Leo smiled faintly and got to work.

The sound of metal clicking, screws turning, and machines humming to life filled the space. Outside, the neighborhood slowly woke up. A few early customers peeked in, saw the activity, and hesitated before stepping inside — surprised to find the place not just open, but alive.

Marty lingered near the counter, awkwardly wiping it down for the third time that morning. He didn't fully understand what was happening, but he could feel the shift. The air wasn't heavy anymore. It didn't smell like neglect.

For the first time in years, he didn't feel like a ghost in his own workplace.

[DING!]

[Laundromat restoration progress: 88%]

[Daily revenue trend: steadily rising]

[Mission progress: 77%]

Leo glanced at the invisible system panel. Only a little more work remained before the laundromat crossed into permanent profitability.

And once that happened…

He would hold tangible proof of the Morgan Group's incompetence.

The bell above the laundromat door jingled. An elderly woman with silver hair walked in, carrying an empty laundry basket. She set a hard candy on the counter and smiled at Marty. "Thanks to you boys, this place is like a new one. The machines work, it's clean, and I don't have to trek three blocks to the next laundromat anymore. This is for you."

Marty froze, his cheeks flushing pink as he fumbled to take the candy. He'd worked at Sunshine Wash for five years, and no customer had ever thanked him — only complained, snapped, and hurried away. After the woman left, he stared at the candy on the counter, then glanced at Leo and Jake, who were busy but efficient, working in perfect sync. Wordlessly, he picked up his rag and scrubbed the dusty corner of the counter he'd never bothered with before.

[DING!]

[Marty loyalty: 55% → 65%]

[Trigger: Perceived the value of work, emotional recognition of the team.]

Around midday, just as Leo finished calibrating the final machine, his phone buzzed in his pocket.

He pulled it out.

A new post from the college group chat — still populated by people he'd once called classmates.

The photo was taken late the previous night.

Derek Morgan, surrounded by a crowd of cheering friends, holding a bottle of expensive champagne. Mia stood right beside him, smiling brightly, her arm wrapped around his waist.

The caption made Leo's expression turn cold.

"Poor kids can never understand the good life. Stay in your lane, scrub."

The message wasn't tagged. It wasn't sent directly to him.

But everyone knew who it was about.

Jake leaned over, saw the post, and immediately tensed up, his playful grin vanishing completely.

"Boss… that's targeted. He's basically poking you with a stick for fun."

Leo locked his phone and slipped it back into his pocket. His hands didn't shake. His breathing didn't speed up.

If anything, he grew calmer.

"He's not poking me," Leo said quietly. "He's announcing his weakness."

Jake blinked. "Weakness? How is this weakness?"

"People who feel truly superior don't waste time mocking those below them," Leo explained, his voice steady and rational. "They don't need to. They don't even look down. They just… exist."

He paused, his gaze sharpening.

"Derek needs to prove he's better. That means deep down, he's already worried."

Jake stared at his boss, a new kind of respect flickering in his eyes.

"You think so?"

"I know so," Leo said. "And worry makes people careless."

Across town, in the high-rise apartment Mia now called home.

She stared at the same group chat post, her smile long gone.

The message had been Derek's idea. He'd laughed as he typed it, proud of how clever and cruel he sounded.

But Mia…

She couldn't shake the strange, twisting feeling in her chest.

She'd expected Leo to fall apart. To beg. To disappear completely.

Instead, he'd vanished silently.

No drama.

No breakdown.

No desperation.

Just… nothing.

It was as if she'd never mattered to him at all.

And that thought bothered her far more than she wanted to admit.

"Babe, you okay?" Derek called from the bedroom, walking out in a fresh new outfit. "You've been staring at your phone forever."

Mia quickly forced a smile and locked her phone. "I'm fine. Just bored."

Derek walked over and kissed her forehead. "Don't worry. Tonight we're going out again. Better party. Better people. No trash allowed."

He grinned, completely confident.

Completely blind.

Back at Sunshine Wash, Leo closed the back panel on the last machine and pressed the power button.

The machine rumbled softly to life, spinning smoothly, quietly, perfectly.

The entire laundromat was now fully operational.

Jake let out a loud cheer and pumped his fist. "YES! We did it! This place is officially un-sad! I feel like we just won a war… but with laundry."

Leo stood back and looked around.

Bright lights.

Clean floors.

Working machines.

Laughing customers.

A far cry from the rotting, neglected dump the Morgan Group had ignored.

A far cry from the boy who'd been humiliated in that rainy café just days earlier.

[DING!]

[All machines restored to full function!]

[Sunshine Wash has reached operational peak!]

[Mission completion predicted within 48 hours!]

Leo turned toward Jake, his eyes calm and dark.

"We're not done," he said.

Jake tilted his head. "Wait, what else is there? The place is perfect!"

Leo's lips curved into a faint, cold smile.

"The laundromat is ready," he said softly.

"Now I need to send the Morgan Group a message they can't ignore."

Jake's eyes lit up.

He didn't know what that meant.

But he knew it was going to be legendary.

[DING!]

[Host has completed the foundation of his first territory.

The first official strike against the Morgan Group is approaching.

And this time, it will not be quiet.]
