Chapter 44 - The Awakening of J1

The friendly family vacation between the two families gradually came to an end as the sun set. The adults returned to the mansion and began packing their belongings for the trip back to the city. When the morning sunlight appeared, they loaded everything into the cars and prepared to depart once again.

As farewell gifts for the Violet family, the Thorne family loaded several bottles of premium wine produced from their vineyard along with baskets of freshly harvested fruit into their car. They also packed some fruit and wine into their own car before driving out onto the main road.

Beneath the gentle morning sunlight, the line of cars traveled quietly along the highway. The lush scenery of the vineyard slowly faded into the distance behind them. The flower fields planted across the hillsides swayed gently in the breeze, appearing and disappearing beyond the car windows.

After arriving in the city, each family returned to their own homes. As soon as Julian entered the front yard, he helped the elders carry several of their belongings inside while the housekeepers hurried over to move the remaining luggage. After returning to his room, he changed into a fresh set of clothes and prepared to head to the hospital.

....

Upon arriving at the hospital, Julian first stopped by the reception desk to ask about the conditions of his patients. After that, he entered his office, put on his white duty coat, and began reviewing the medical records that had been neatly arranged on his desk. At that moment, a knock came from the door. The head nurse entered, ready to accompany him on his rounds.

"Dr. Julian... we're ready to begin the patient rounds."

"Alright... let's go."

Julian handed the patient files to the nurse before leaving the office. As part of his daily routine, he visited each patient one by one, checking on their conditions and updating their treatment plans wherever necessary. After finishing his rounds and returning toward his office, his phone suddenly rang.

"Julian... are you busy? You just got back from the trip and went straight to the hospital. Aren't you tired?"

"Rosie..."

A gentle smile appeared on Julian's face.

"I'm not tired. You must be the exhausted one. You just got back not long ago. Did you take your medicine this afternoon?"

"Mhm... I already took it."

She paused briefly.

"By the way... are you still working? Or are you done already?"

"I'm finished."

Julian replied warmly.

"I've already checked on all my patients. There's nothing special left to do today. Why? Tell me, My Love. What can I do for you?"

Rosalie hesitated before speaking.

"I want to go to the secret house. If you're free... could you come pick me up? We've been busy travelling these past few days. Our break is over now. It's time to get back to work."

Julian couldn't help but laugh.

"Haha... you little workaholic."

He shook his head helplessly.

"I wanted you to rest a little longer. But if you're not feeling dizzy or weak anymore, I'll take you there."

His tone became playful.

"Now then... I'd like a health report from my sweetheart."

Rosalie giggled.

"Hehe... I feel much better. I'm not dizzy anymore, and I'm not tired either. I've already taken my medicine. This morning, right after I got home, I had some meat soup and rested properly."

She laughed softly.

"I knew you'd ask me all those questions, so I made sure to take good care of myself."

"Haha..."

Julian smiled helplessly.

"Alright then. I'll come pick you up. Give me about half an hour."

He paused.

"Do you want me to buy you anything to eat on the way?"

"No.nWe'll go to the secret house first. If we want to eat something on the way, we can buy it then."

"Alright."

Julian ended the call and returned to his office. After organizing the remaining documents, he removed his white coat and hung it neatly on its hanger. Locking the office behind him, he walked toward the parking garage, climbed into his white sedan, and drove toward Rosalie's house.

...

When they arrived at the secret house, Rosalie unlocked the laboratory door, switched on the lights, and stepped inside. Standing in the center of the laboratory was a human-sized object covered by a large white cloth. Rosalie slowly pulled the cloth away.

Beneath it stood a humanoid robot that looked exactly like Julian. Its face, eyes, skin texture even the tiniest facial details had been recreated with such precision that it was almost impossible to distinguish it from a real human being. Rosalie walked over to the control panel and activated the system. The humanoid unit immediately began responding.

"System booting..."

"AI Core Online..."

The robot's eyes slowly illuminated. For the very first time, it began to move. It looked at its own hands and then its legs. Finally, it slowly turned its head and examined every corner of the laboratory. Rather than resembling a machine, its behavior looked more like that of a newborn child experiencing the world for the first time.

It cautiously took one step after another. It touched the floor beneath its feet. It gently ran its fingers across the wooden table and stared curiously at the light shining above. Julian and Rosalie silently watched every movement without interrupting. Rosalie spoke quietly.

"It's learning already."

Julian nodded without taking his eyes off the robot.

"Yeah... The AI learning speed is much faster than we expected."

Rosalie slowly nodded.

"It's an advanced adaptive AI."

At that moment, the robot turned toward both of them. After staring silently for several seconds, a gentle smile slowly appeared on its face. It extended its hand.

"Hello."

Rosalie smiled warmly and accepted the handshake.

"Hello... J1."

The robot gently shook her hand before politely lifting it and placing a respectful kiss upon the back of it. Afterward, it turned toward Julian. Tilting its head slightly, it stared at him for several moments without saying a word. Then it smiled once again. Rosalie gently took J1 by the hand.

"We're going outside."

The robot looked curiously toward the courtyard. Rosalie opened the control panel once more and switched the operating mode.

"Manual Mode Off."

"Auto Mode: Partial."

As soon as the door opened, J1 slowly stepped outside. A cool afternoon breeze brushed gently across its face. J1 closed its eyes for a brief moment before smiling peacefully.

"So... This... is the wind?"

Its voice sounded completely natural. There was no mechanical tone whatsoever. Its voice was indistinguishable from Julian's. Rosalie and Julian quietly followed several steps behind, silently observing. J1 wandered across the grassy yard. It reached out to touch the trees. It gently stroked the grass beneath its feet and carefully examined the leaves one by one. Then it walked slowly across the soil, taking in everything surrounding it.

Bathed beneath the warm sunlight, it looked genuinely happy.

"So... This is... nature?"

Its voice carried both curiosity and amazement. A few moments later, it stopped walking. Turning around to face Rosalie and Julian, it asked quietly,

"May I...come outside like this every day?"

Both Rosalie and Julian froze. For several seconds, neither of them answered. Rosalie unconsciously tightened her grip on the control panel. Julian continued staring silently at the robot. Although no emotion appeared on his face, it was obvious that he had noticed something unusual. Rosalie spoke quietly.

"It's evolving far too quickly. Its responses are becoming smoother and more natural."

She continued.

"I think it needs more interaction with the real world."

Julian frowned slightly.

"I think... This is becoming more dangerous than we expected."

He looked directly at Rosalie.

"Have you added any additional control systems?"

Rosalie remained silent for a moment before calmly answering,

"That's why I installed both Manual Mode and Auto Mode."

Julian nodded.

"And the GPS tracker?"

"It's installed."

She pointed toward the robot's back.

"Inside the rear module."

Rosalie glanced back at the control panel before speaking almost to herself.

"The sentence it just said...wasn't included in any of the programmed protocols."

J1 suddenly became quiet. Slowly lowering its head, it silently looked at Rosalie once again. Julian continued observing every subtle movement. For the first time, uncertainty and perhaps even a trace of fear crossed his mind.

"This..."

Julian murmured quietly.

"...isn't just AI anymore."

He kept his eyes fixed on J1.

"At least... some part of it is beginning to develop something that resembles consciousness."
