The gentle morning sunlight spread softly across the streets of the small town. Rosalie slowly brought her white car to a stop in front of the secret house located on the outskirts of the city. She stepped out of the car, unlocked the gate, and drove into the spacious yard. After parking beneath the carport, she got out once again and walked into the house.
Making her way straight to the laboratory, she activated J1's system. As every system came online, J1 slowly opened his eyes and greeted her with a gentle smile.
"Rosalie..."
Rosalie smiled brightly in return.
"Let's go out today. I'll introduce you to the world outside."
J1's eyebrows lifted ever so slightly.
"...Outside?"
"Yeah. You've been staying inside this house for too long. Today, I'll show you what the outside world is like."
J1 gave a small nod.
"Very well."
He stepped forward and naturally took the hand Rosalie had reached out to him. Together, they walked back outside, got into the car, and drove away from the secret house.
...
The car eventually came to a stop near a quiet park beside the riverside. The park echoed with the cheerful laughter of children at play, while elderly people sat beneath the shade of large trees, chatting peacefully with one another. Rosalie looked at J1 with a warm smile.
"Come on. Let's take a walk."
"Alright."
J1 quietly walked beside her. His eyes calmly observed everyone around him. Not far away, a little child stumbled and fell while running. The child's mother immediately rushed over, gently lifting the child into her arms and comforting them. J1 unconsciously stopped walking and silently watched the scene unfold before him. Rosalie noticed his gaze and turned toward him.
"What are you looking at?"
"...People."
Rosalie laughs softly.
"What are you thinking about?"
J1 remained silent for a brief moment before answering.
"The way humans care for one another... and how every individual is different from the next."
Rosalie nodded gently.
"That's right."
"...That's what the human world is."
After another brief silence, she asked,
"So... what do you think of the outside world?"
J1 calmly replied,
"My database contains an enormous amount of environmental information."
He paused for a moment before continuing.
"But experiencing it firsthand... is completely different from simply possessing the data."
Rosalie smiled.
"That's called experience."
J1 slowly nodded.
"I understand."
Together, they left the park and continued walking toward the riverside promenade. Sunlight shimmered beautifully across the surface of the river, while the leaves overhead swayed gently with every passing breeze. Rosalie rested both hands on the railing and quietly admired the flowing water. J1 stood beside her, looking out across the river as well.
His appearance was so natural that no one would ever suspect he was anything other than an ordinary human being. There wasn't a single visible feature that hinted he was an artificial creation.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?"
She glanced sideways at him.
"Do you like this place?"
J1 remained silent for a few seconds while staring at the river. The silence wasn't caused by processing delay. Instead, it resembled the quiet contemplation of a human lost in thought.
"...Yes. I suppose... I do like it."
He continued quietly,
"But... I still don't fully understand what 'liking something' truly means."
Rosalie smiled softly.
"You're always like that. As long as you keep learning little by little, you'll understand it someday."
Without turning toward her, J1 kept watching the rippling water.
"I think...learning is a process that never truly ends."
A gentle smile appeared in Rosalie's eyes.
"You really are becoming more and more like Julian."
At the mention of that name, J1's expression remained unchanged, yet he paused ever so slightly.
"...Julian."
He quietly repeated the name beneath his breath.
"He's an incredibly kind person. And... he's always gentle and caring toward you."
Rosalie fell silent for a moment before smiling once again.
"He's a genuinely good person. He treats everyone with sincerity and also the kind of person who's kind simply because that's who he is."
J1 nodded slowly.
"Based on my assessment...he consistently places the needs of others before his own. He prioritizes other people over himself."
Rosalie immediately burst into amused laughter.
"No. That's not how you should describe him. You always measure everything with data."
J1 turned to look at her.
"...Then how should I describe him?"
Rosalie thought quietly for a moment. Then she smiled.
"He's...the kind of person who makes everyone around him feel safe. Even if he simply stood beside someone, they would naturally feel protected."
J1 quietly absorbed every word she said. After a short silence, he finally spoke.
"Then...he must be someone very important."
Rosalie turned toward him.
"Why do you think that?"
J1 answered with complete sincerity.
"Because making another person feel safe...isn't something that can be accomplished easily."
A gentle breeze passed between them. Rosalie remained silent for a moment before speaking softly.
"You could become like that too, you know."
J1 continued to stare at the river without looking at her.
"...If I can become like that, then does that mean I'm not there yet?"
Rosalie did not answer immediately. A faint, unspoken emotion surfaced on her face. From a distance, the laughter of children could still be heard. After a moment, J1 spoke again.
"But... I will keep learning."
Rosalie looked at him. In that instant, she felt as if she had come to understand something. The one standing beside her no longer felt like just a machine. It felt as if he was slowly becoming something closer to a human being.
...
After a while, J1 spoke quietly again.
"...A place like this..."
Rosalie turned toward him.
"Hm?"
"Doctor Julian once said..."
Rosalie's eyes widened slightly.
"What did he say?"
J1 continued to gaze at the river as he spoke calmly.
"That someday... he wanted to bring Rosalie to a quiet, peaceful place like this."
Rosalie fell silent. J1 continued.
"He spends most of his time between the hospital, studying, and work. But... he once told me that he wanted to spend more time with you."
A gentle smile appeared on Rosalie's face.
"That man... is always thinking about work."
J1 turned slightly toward her.
"But he wasn't lying. Everything he said... are things he genuinely wanted to do."
Rosalie let out a soft sigh.
"I know..."
A cool breeze passed through again, causing Rosalie's long hair to sway gently. J1 quietly stood beside her, watching her. The strands of her hair brushed lightly across her face.
"...Your hair is on your face."
"Mm..."
Without hesitation, J1 gently reached out and tucked her hair behind her ear. Rosalie froze for a moment, slightly surprised, then turned to look at him. J1's mission was to protect Rosalie and Doctor Julian.
But at that moment, his processor was quietly learning a new definition of "protection." Protecting someone did not only mean shielding them from danger. It could also mean ensuring that their smile would not fade. And slowly, without fully realizing it yet, he was beginning to understand that truth.
