Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: The One Who Looked Back

Night settled slowly over Veyra.

The city lights flickered across the skyline like stars trapped beneath glass.

For the first time in hours, the streets were calm again.

Too calm.

Kai stood alone on the rooftop overlooking Sector Eight.

Below him, Archive repair crews worked through the night, sealing the damage from the battle.

The plaza looked smaller now.

Fragile.

Like a place that had nearly stopped existing.

---

The fracture pulsed again.

Kai looked up.

The crack in the sky had grown slightly wider.

Not enough for most people to notice.

But he noticed.

The shadow behind it had moved closer.

He could feel it now.

Like pressure behind his thoughts.

---

Footsteps approached behind him.

Serah.

"You shouldn't be alone right now," she said.

"I'm not alone," Kai replied.

She followed his gaze to the sky.

The fracture shimmered faintly.

"Something changed," she said quietly.

"Yes."

"You felt it too."

"Yes."

---

Below them, Lira sat on the rooftop stairs writing under a small lantern.

Her notebook was almost full now.

Every page filled with events, observations, sketches of seams and fractures.

She paused suddenly.

"…Kai."

He turned slightly.

"What?"

"You should see this."

He walked over.

She turned the notebook toward him.

On the page she had just written—

New words were appearing.

Slowly.

Letter by letter.

Not in her handwriting.

Kai felt the warmth inside his chest flicker again.

"What does it say?" Serah asked.

Lira swallowed.

"…It's writing by itself."

The message finished forming.

YOU ARE LATE.

The lantern flickered.

The fracture pulsed sharply overhead.

Kai slowly closed the notebook.

"That's new."

---

The air around them shifted.

Not wind.

Not sound.

Presence.

The fracture brightened suddenly.

For the first time since it appeared—

The crack in the sky widened.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Inside it—

Something moved.

Not a creature.

Not a fragment.

A silhouette.

Tall.

Perfectly still.

Watching the city.

Watching Kai.

---

Serah stepped forward instinctively.

"What is that?"

Kai didn't answer.

Because the figure inside the fracture moved.

Just one step closer to the edge.

And for a moment—

Their eyes met.

Even across the impossible distance.

Kai felt something colder than fear.

Recognition.

Like looking at a reflection that wasn't supposed to exist.

The figure raised one hand slowly.

Not threatening.

Not aggressive.

Just acknowledging him.

Lira whispered behind them.

"…It knows you."

Kai didn't move.

Didn't blink.

Then the figure spoke.

Not through sound.

Through the fracture itself.

The entire sky vibrated with a single thought.

YOU HAVE DELAYED LONG ENOUGH.

The crack in the sky began closing again.

The figure stepped back into the darkness behind it.

Before disappearing completely—

It said one final thing.

THE NEXT CHOICE WILL NOT BE YOURS ALONE.

Then the fracture sealed to its previous size.

The sky returned to normal.

The city lights flickered quietly below.

---

No one spoke for several seconds.

Lira slowly wrote the words down.

Serah finally broke the silence.

"That… was not a creature."

"No," Kai said quietly.

"What was it?"

Kai stared at the sky.

Thinking.

Remembering something he had almost forgotten.

"…I think," he said slowly,

"that was someone who already won."

---

Far above the city, deep beyond the fracture—

The silhouette watched the world of Veyra continue.

And smiled slightly.

The experiment had finally become interesting.
