The path stretched into darkness.
Ethan stood at its entrance staring at the road that had appeared after he asked the question no Collector had apparently thought to ask: *Who was the original debtor?* There was no ground beneath the path yet it remained solid beneath his feet. Thin silver lines ran through its surface like veins beneath skin occasionally pulsing with a light before disappearing into the distance.
Behind him the silver succession door remained open.
For seconds none of them moved.
The Previous Holder looked back at the door toward Ethan. The First Collector remained still his ancient gaze fixed on the path ahead.
Ethan finally broke the silence. "So... Where does this lead?"
The First Collector didn't answer.
That alone made Ethan uncomfortable.
The First Collector had always spoken as though he possessed an answer to everything concerning the Debt System. He had explained the Collectors, the seal, the succession, the pressure network and the purpose of the debt.. Now he was staring at an ordinary-looking path with the same uncertainty Ethan felt.
"I don't know " the First Collector finally admitted.
Ethan raised one of his eyebrow.
"You don't even know?"
"No."
The answer was simple.
For the time since Ethan had met him the First Collector sounded less like an authority and more like someone standing at the edge of something he had never encountered before.
The Previous Holder stepped closer to the path. Studied the silver markings. "I've never seen this before."
"You've used the System for twelve years " Ethan said. ". You've never encountered it?"
"Not once."
Ethan looked at the path again.
That was interesting.
Not because the path was mysterious. Because two people who had spent decades dealing with the Debt System had no idea where it came from.
He took another step forward.
Nothing happened.
No warning appeared.
No notification appeared in his vision.
No voice explained what he was doing.
Ethan almost smiled.
"At least it is not telling me what to do."
The Previous Holder glanced at him. "You sound relieved."
"I am."
They continued walking.
The path that was ahead us was strangely quiet. There was no sign wind, sound or any sensation of movement. Ethan could still see the two beside him but the darkness around them seemed endless.
After minutes he noticed something.
The silver lines beneath the path were changing.
They weren't random.
They were forming patterns.
Ethan slowed down.
"Wait."
The Previous Holder stopped.
Ethan. Examined the markings beneath his feet. Several thin lines crossed one another before separating. At first they looked like the pressure network they had seen earlier. There was one important difference.
"They aren't carrying debt " Ethan said.
The First Collector looked down.
"Then what are they carrying?"
Ethan didn't answer immediately.
He wasn't sure.
He placed his hand near one of the lines without touching it. The line brightened slightly.
A faint sensation passed through his mind.
Not a voice.
Not a memory.
Something closer to recognition.
He pulled his hand back.
The line went dark again.
"What did you see?" the Previous Holder asked.
"Nothing."
The Previous Holder frowned. "You reacted."
"I felt something. That's different."
The First Collector watched Ethan carefully. "What did you feel?"
Ethan thought about the question.
"Like the path knew I was there."
Neither man spoke.
Ethan stood.
"Why are you looking at me? I'm just as lost"
They continued.
After a while the darkness began to change. A faint grey light appeared ahead so distant that Ethan initially thought it was an illusion.
It grew brighter with every step.
Eventually the path ended.
Ethan stepped forward. Stopped.
They were standing on a stone platform.
Beyond it was a landscape.
Not a void.
Not another section of the Debt System.
A real landscape.
Mountains stretched across the horizon. A wide valley lay between them covered by forests that seemed untouched by civilization. Rivers crossed the land like silver threads eventually disappearing into the distance. Beyond the valley stood the remains of enormous structures.
Ethan stared.
"What is this place?"
The First Collector walked past him. Looked toward the ruins.
He said nothing.
The Previous Holder looked equally stunned.
For a moment Ethan wondered if this was another part of the Systems network.
Then he noticed something.
There was no pressure network.
No glowing lines covered the land.
No visible debt flowed through the mountains.
It was simply... A world.
Perhaps what remained of one.
Ethan walked toward the edge of the platform. The air felt different here. He could feel wind against his face for the time since entering the path.
"This isn't inside the System " he said.
The First Collector slowly shook his head.
"No."
"Then, where the hell are we?"
"I am just clueless."
Ethan looked at him.
"You really don't know."
"No."
That answer bothered Ethan more than anything
If the First Collector didn't know this place existed then the story of the Debt System was far older and larger than the Collectors had believed.
Ethan stopped himself before following that thought too far.
They had already spent much time chasing answers.
For once he wanted to understand where they were before deciding what it meant.
He looked toward the ruins.
"We should start there."
The Previous Holder nodded.
The First Collector remained silent for moments before following them.
The descent from the platform was easier than Ethan expected. A narrow stone staircase led toward the valley. Moss covered most of the steps suggesting that no one had used them in a long time.
Down Ethan noticed something carved into the stone.
He stopped.
It was a symbol.
A circle broken by a line.
The same symbol.
His expression changed slightly.
The Previous Holder noticed.
"You recognize it."
"Yes."
"From Greyhaven?"
Ethan nodded.
The First Collector came closer.
For the time his expression showed something close to concern.
"Where did you see this?"
"On the branch."
". Before that?"
"An old pressure map, beneath Greyhaven."
The First Collector stared at the symbol.
He reached out. Stopped before touching it.
"Then this place may have been connected to Greyhaven."
"May have been?" Ethan asked.
The First Collector looked at him.
"Greyhaven was built over a convergence point. We erased the network because it was unstable."
"You said that before."
"Yes."
"So what didn't you tell me?"
The First Collectors expression hardened.
"I didn't know this."
Ethan studied him for a moment.
He believed him.
Not completely.
Enough.
They continued down the stairs.
The ruins became clearer as they approached. What Ethan had initially thought were towers were actually stone structures arranged around a central courtyard. Most had collapsed,. Several walls remained standing.
There were no statues.
No names.
No banners.
No obvious signs of who had built the place.
It was as if someone had removed every identity from it.
Ethan entered the courtyard.
At its center was a circular stone platform.
He expected another System notification.
None appeared.
That was becoming strangely comforting.
He walked around the platform examining its surface.
There were dozens of markings carved into it.
Not words.
Numbers.
Some had been scratched out.
Others were completely worn away.
The Previous Holder crouched beside one.
"These aren't debt values."
"How do you know?"
"Because debt values always have a signature."
Ethan looked at him.
"Everything has a signature?"
"Everything the System records."
Ethan looked at the stone again.
"Then what does the System not record?"
The Previous Holder didn't answer.
The First Collector did.
"Things that existed before it."
Ethan slowly turned toward him.
The First Collector stood still in the ruined courtyard staring at the stones and shattered walls.
"Perhaps that is what we're standing in."
A heavy silence fell over the group. No one moved. No one spoke.
Ethan glanced around again. This time the ruins didn't feel like a civilization. They felt like something. Like an idea that had once been alive— gone.
Something had existed here before the System.
Before the Collectors.
Before the rules they lived by every day.
Ethan didn't jump to conclusions. He never did. Not anymore.
"Let's not assume anything yet " he said. "We don't know who built this place. We don't know when.. We don't know if it has any connection to the first debt."
The Previous Holder gave a smile. "You're learning."
"I'm trying not to die because I made an assumption."
"That's also learning."
The First Collector stepped toward one of the cracked walls his boots crunching over stone. "There may be records."
Ethan followed.
They searched for an hour.
Most of the ruins were empty. Crumbled tablets. Dark tunnels with no exit. Mechanisms frozen in time. Nothing useful.
Then Ethan found it.
A room beneath one of the structures.
No door. Just a narrow gap hidden under fallen rocks.
He pushed aside the stone. Crawled through.
Inside was a chamber untouched by decay.
The air was still. The walls clean.
A stone table stood against the wall.
On it rested a single object.
A small black tablet.
No writing. No symbols. Smooth, dark stone.
Ethan approached slowly.
His fingers hovered over it. Then touched it.
The moment his skin met the surface something changed.
Not in the room.
In his mind.
For a fraction of a second he saw a network.
Not the Debt System.
Something older.
The pressure lines pulsed across a world that looked nothing like the one he knew.
Then he saw a person.
Standing before the network.
Face unseen. Voice unheard.
They placed something into the system.
Small. Almost invisible.
Then all went black.
Ethan pulled his hand back.
The vision faded.
The tablet sat where it had been.
The Previous Holder stepped forward. "What happened?"
Ethan stared at the object. "I don't know."
The First Collector entered the room. His eyes swept over the tablet. Then over Ethan.
"What did you see?"
Ethan hesitated. "A network."
The Collector's gaze sharpened. "Anything else?"
"A person."
"Who?"
"I couldn't see."
The Collector didn't push.
Ethan looked down again. "Whatever happened here… the System didn't show it to me."
The Previous Holder frowned. " It couldn't."
Ethan turned to him. That thought settled deeper than words could say.
For once there was something beyond the System's reach.
Something real.
Something hidden.
He carefully lifted the tablet.
Nothing happened.
No alert. No sound. No warning.
Just silence.
He tucked it inside his coat.
"We're taking this."
The First Collector nodded.
They left the chamber.
Outside the sun dipped behind the mountains.
Ethan stood in the courtyard gazing at the ruins.
He had expected the journey, to the First Debt to give him answers.
Instead he found a place that asked an older question.
This time he wasn't angry.
He wasn't afraid.
He just understood.
They didn't need to know everything today.
They only needed to find the piece.
The Previous Holder walked beside him. "What are you thinking?"
Ethan looked toward the fading light. "That whoever built this place didn't want the System to remember them."
The Previous Holder stayed silent.
". If that's true?" he asked.
Ethan glanced back at the ruins. "Then someone went to a lot of trouble to make sure we wouldn't find them."
He started walking toward the valley.
The First Collector and the Previous Holder followed.
None of them noticed the symbol carved into the stone beneath the ruins.
The circle.
The broken line.
And beneath it almost buried in dust and time were four words.
THE DEBT WAS NEVER MINE.
