Chapter 24 - CHAPTER 24

Aria followed him through the Citadel in silence.

The corridors felt different tonight—darker, heavier, as though the walls themselves sensed what she was about to attempt. The runes flickered faintly, pulsing in uneven rhythms that made her skin prickle. Even the shadows seemed restless, shifting in slow, uneasy waves.

Her hand stayed pressed to her stomach.

The child's presence was a soft warmth beneath her palm, steady and fragile all at once. A reminder of everything she had to protect. Everything she could still lose.

The fragment pulsed faintly beneath her ribs.

You cannot wield what is mine.

Aria exhaled slowly. "It's not yours anymore."

You are delusional.

"No."

You are breaking.

"I'm not broken yet."

Silence.

But not absence.

Never absence.

The Demon King walked ahead of her, silent as ever, his cloak whispering across the stone floor. The shadows bent subtly toward him, drawn to him like loyal creatures. His presence was cold, steady, grounding.

Aria hated how much she needed that right now.

When they reached the Chamber of Resonance, she stopped.

The doors were tall, carved from pale stone, etched with runes that glowed faintly like moonlight. The air around them hummed with a strange, vibrating energy that made her bones ache.

Aria stepped back. "This feels… wrong."

"It is necessary."

"You keep saying that."

"Because it remains true."

He placed a hand on the door.

The runes flared.

The doors opened.

Warm air rushed out, carrying the scent of old magic and something deeper—something that made Aria's skin prickle.

She hesitated. "What's inside?"

"The place where you will learn to wield her power."

Aria swallowed hard. "And if I can't?"

"You will."

Aria glared at him. "You're impossible."

"So I have been told."

She stepped inside.

The Chamber of Resonance was vast—larger than any chamber she had seen. The ceiling arched high above, disappearing into swirling silver mist. The floor was smooth stone, etched with runes that pulsed faintly like a heartbeat.

In the center of the room was a raised platform surrounded by floating shards of crystal that hummed softly.

Aria approached slowly. "What is this?"

"The Resonance Array."

Aria blinked. "That's not helpful."

"It amplifies what is inside you."

Aria stiffened. "Inside me?"

"Yes."

"You mean… her?"

"And you."

Aria pressed a hand to her stomach. "And the baby?"

He met her gaze. "The child will not be harmed."

Aria narrowed her eyes. "You're sure?"

"Yes."

Aria exhaled slowly. "Okay."

He gestured to the platform. "Stand there."

Aria hesitated. "What happens if I do?"

"You will feel everything."

Aria's stomach twisted. "Everything?"

"Yes."

"Her power?"

"Yes."

"Her emotions?"

"Yes."

"Her thoughts?"

"Yes."

Aria groaned. "I hate this."

"So I have been told."

She stepped onto the platform.

The runes beneath her feet brightened instantly, responding to her presence. The crystals around her pulsed, humming softly, vibrating in time with her heartbeat.

Or the fragment's.

She wasn't sure anymore.

The Demon King raised a hand.

The crystals shifted, aligning themselves in a perfect circle. They pulsed in time with the fragment's rhythm, glowing brighter with each beat.

Aria's breath quickened. "What are you doing?"

"Amplifying your resonance."

"That sounds bad."

"It is necessary."

The crystals brightened.

The hum deepened.

The fragment stirred.

You dare touch my power.

Aria clenched her fists. "It's not yours."

You cannot wield it.

"I can."

You will break.

"I won't."

You are weak.

"I'm still here."

The hum grew louder.

The crystals vibrated.

The runes flared.

Aria cried out, her knees buckling. The warmth inside her flared, spreading through her chest, her arms, her legs. She felt weightless, suspended between worlds.

The fragment's voice roared through her mind.

You cannot control me.

Aria pressed a hand to her stomach. "I'm not trying to control you."

Lies.

"I'm trying to control myself."

You are nothing without me.

Aria's voice rose. "I am more than you."

The crystals shook.

The runes blazed.

The fragment screamed.

The Demon King's voice cut through the chaos.

"Aria. Focus."

"I can't—"

"You must."

"She's too strong."

"You are stronger."

Aria pressed a hand to her stomach. "For them."

The fragment hissed.

The child weakens you.

"No."

The child divides you.

"No."

The child will destroy you.

Aria's voice cracked. "The child gives me strength."

The crystals blazed.

The fragment screamed.

Aria stepped forward.

"Be silent."

The darkness trembled.

"Be still."

The fragment roared.

"Be mine."

The woman of shadow appeared before her, her form flickering, unstable, furious.

You cannot command me.

Aria lifted her chin.

"I already have."

The woman lunged.

Aria braced herself—

—but something stopped the blow.

A pulse of silver light erupted from her chest, bright and sharp, humming with power she had never felt before.

The woman recoiled.

Impossible.

Aria pressed a hand to her stomach.

"It's not just me anymore."

The woman's eyes widened.

The child…

Aria stepped forward.

"The child is my anchor."

The woman hissed.

The child is your doom.

"No."

Aria's voice rose.

"The child is your end."

The crystals blazed.

The runes flared.

The fragment screamed.

And then—

Silence.

Aria collapsed forward, gasping.

The fragment pulsed faintly.

Weakly.

Obedient.

The Demon King stepped onto the platform, lifting her gently.

"You did it."

Aria trembled. "I used her power."

"Yes."

"And it didn't hurt the baby."

"No."

Aria pressed a hand to her stomach, tears burning her eyes. "I felt them."

He nodded. "They responded."

Aria's breath caught. "What does that mean?"

He held her gaze.

"It means," he said quietly, "your child is already stronger than her."
