Chapter 2 - Unnamed

Dukhiram and the Golden Goose

In a quiet village surrounded by green fields and dusty roads, there lived a poor but honest farmer named Dukhiram. His small hut stood at the edge of the village near a banyan tree. Dukhiram had very little in life — a tiny piece of land, an old wooden plough, and a kind heart full of hope.

Though he worked hard every day, he barely earned enough to eat. Many villagers laughed at him because of his poverty. But Dukhiram never complained. He believed that patience and honesty were the greatest treasures of all.

One evening, after a long day of work, Dukhiram was returning home when he saw an old injured bird lying near the road. It was a goose with white feathers stained with dust. Without hesitation, Dukhiram picked it up gently and took it home.

He cleaned its wounds, fed it rice and water, and made a soft bed of straw for it. Days passed, and the goose slowly recovered. Dukhiram grew fond of the bird, and the goose seemed to understand his kindness.

One morning, something magical happened.

When Dukhiram went to check on the goose, he found a shining golden egg beside it. He rubbed his eyes in disbelief. The egg was heavy and bright like the sun.

Dukhiram took the egg to the market. The goldsmith examined it carefully and said, "This is pure gold!"

With the money from that egg, Dukhiram bought food, repaired his house, and cleared his debts. The next morning, the goose laid another golden egg.

Soon, Dukhiram was no longer poor. But he did not become proud. He continued living simply and helped the needy villagers. People who once laughed at him now respected him.

However, news of the golden goose spread across the village. A greedy neighbor named Haran became jealous. He thought, "If I had that goose, I would be the richest man in the land!"

One night, Haran tried to steal the goose. But as he entered Dukhiram's house quietly, the goose began to flap its wings loudly. Dukhiram woke up and caught Haran red-handed.

Instead of punishing him harshly, Dukhiram said calmly, "Greed destroys peace, my friend. Be content with what you have."

Haran felt ashamed and apologized.

Years passed. The golden goose continued to lay one egg every morning. Dukhiram never tried to harm it or force it to lay more eggs. He understood that patience brings steady blessings.

He used his wealth wisely — building a small school in the village and helping poor farmers buy seeds.

In the end, Dukhiram became known not just as a rich man, but as a wise and generous one.

And the golden goose? It lived happily in the warm little hut, cared for by the man whose kindness had changed both their lives.

Moral: Greed brings destruction, but patience and kindness bring lasting prosperity.
