Chapter 69 - Garos the Dragon-Bomber

Translator: AnubisTL

Garos kept his eyes locked on the cliff serpent dragon, and just as it tried to escape, he opened his maw and unleashed a lightning-fast, long-range electric fire dragon breath, forcing it to respond.

The electric fire dragon breath streaked across the night sky in a dazzling arc, striking toward the cliff serpent dragon.

It narrowly dodged with a violent twist of its body. Though it evaded the dragon breath, its recently stopped bleeding wound burst open again, sending waves of tearing pain through its body.

"I'll tear you alive!" the cliff serpent dragon roared, lunging toward Garos. But Garos spread his dragon wings wide and retreated once more.

Though his wings were numbed and sluggish from the poison blood, it wasn't enough to impair Garos's mobility. With its injuries making it even slower, the cliff serpent dragon still couldn't catch up.

For a moment, the cliff serpent dragon couldn't figure out what Garos was up to.

It hissed in frustration several times before plummeting to the ground. Its slender body skimmed the earth, gliding between the hills blanketed in ancient trees like a nimble snake. The lower-ranking creatures scattered in its wake, birds and beasts taking flight in all directions.

The uneven terrain provided ample cover, obscuring its movements.

Realizing its aerial maneuverability was no match for Garos, the cliff serpent dragon landed.

Garos's dragon eyes reflected the serpent dragon's sinuous form on the ground. He tucked in his wings and swooped down in pursuit.

The cliff serpent dragon fixed its gaze on Garos's silhouette against the night sky, its long tongue flickering out. It coiled its body, ready to strike, and released a thick cloud of toxic mist that withered the leaves and branches of the surrounding trees.

However.

When Garos was still a hundred meters above the ground, he suddenly veered off, flying parallel to the earth at breakneck speed, abandoning his dive.

A torrent of crimson-hued dragon scales, glowing red from magical energy and air friction, erupted from his body like a fiery rain, showering down on the cliff serpent dragon.

Boom! Boom! Boom!

Massive fireballs erupted across the ground, their searing heat and thick smoke billowing skyward. This carpet bombing, far more widespread than dragon breath, overwhelmed the cliff serpent dragon's agility. It scrambled desperately, only to be engulfed by the flames.

The ground was blasted into blackened pits and gouged with deep ravines.

When the cliff serpent dragon burst free from the fiery onslaught and rolled to extinguish the remaining flames on its body, it revealed a pathetic sight.

Large areas of its body were scorched black, smoke-stained and blistered.

The shockwave from the explosions had ripped off some of its dragon scales, leaving sharp, jagged fragments embedded in its flesh.

Hiss—

The cliff serpent dragon hissed in fury, raising its head.

But before it could spot Garos, another rain of dragon scales cascaded down upon it.

Crash! Crash! Crash!

The flying scales blossomed into crimson flowers as they pierced the dragon's hide, and the flames from the explosions once again swallowed it.

Garos soared and wheeled through the air, his wings spread wide. The explosive scales on his body heated to incandescence from the extreme friction, crackling and popping like burning embers. Occasionally, sparks sputtered and hissed as the superheated scales hit the cold air, like red-hot iron plunged into water.

The dragon scales, nearing their limit, glowed as if about to explode.

Garos unleashed them in a dense barrage, raining down on the cliff serpent dragon.

Landing on the ground proved disastrous. The cliff serpent dragon, battered by Garos's bombardments like a flying fortress, couldn't lift its head. When it tried to soar into the sky, dense volleys of explosive scales or dragon breath met it head-on, forcing it back to the earth.

In its prime, the cliff serpent dragon could have used its explosive speed to evade.

But Garos had wounded it early on. After a prolonged, brutal battle, it was now trapped in the fight, unable to escape.

This was precisely the strategy Garos had devised on his way to Crescent Moon Valley.

First, a ferocious assault to injure the cliff serpent dragon in one wave, avoiding prolonged engagement. Then, while his poison was still mild, he shifted to ranged attacks, retreating when the enemy advanced, advancing when it retreated, and striking when it was exhausted.

The ground cracked and crumbled, ancient trees burning like torches.

Even with the dragonkind's robust vitality, the cliff serpent dragon couldn't withstand such relentless bombardment. Its life force gradually weakened.

As a fire dragon, Garos possessed high resistance to fire damage. However, the explosive scales' primary lethality stemmed not from the flames, but from the shockwaves generated during their detonation, and the shrapnel-like fragments that scattered with them.

Garos swooped through the night sky again, his body trembling.

Only a few scattered explosive scales spiraled outward, striking the ground and bursting into flames.

Turning his head, Garos realized he had nearly exhausted his supply of explosive scales; the saturation bombing had taken a considerable toll.

As the unassuming explosive scales finally fell away, the red-iron dragon's true scales were revealed.

The silver-matte scales shimmered in the moonlight, resembling premium obsidian or steel forged in fire. They possessed an indestructible metallic texture, crisscrossed with glowing crimson veins that flowed like molten lava across his body.

Powerful and majestic, dragon might radiated from him.

In essence, Garos had only now revealed his health bar.

But the cliff serpent dragon was nearing its end.

A massive black-red dragon silhouette loomed in the night sky.

Its colossal wingspan blotted out the moonlight, casting a shadow that enveloped the cliff serpent dragon.

At this moment, the cliff serpent dragon lay in a critical state. Its scales were blasted to pieces, its flesh torn and bleeding, and the venom it emitted reached its most concentrated and violent degree.

With a gaze filled with resentment and unwillingness, it stared at Garos.

The cliff serpent dragon shook its body, and its upright upper half crashed to the ground with a thud, rendering it unconscious.

It's not dead yet, just unconscious.

Should I take it away? Find a way to imprison it and prevent it from killing itself, so it can continuously boost my poison resistance?

Garos narrowed his eyes and exhaled a spherical blast of electric fire dragon breath at the cliff serpent dragon.

Whoosh— The dying cliff serpent dragon suddenly opened its blood-red eyes, contorting its long body to evade the dragon breath. It fixed its gaze on Garos, emitting an enraged hiss.

It had attempted to feign death to lure Garos closer, planning to launch a ferocious counterattack when its venom was at its peak.

But Garos wouldn't fall for the trick and simply finished it off from a distance.

As if experiencing a final burst of life, the severely wounded cliff serpent dragon erupted with a surge of strength, launching itself in a predatory pounce toward Garos. But halfway through the air, it suddenly turned and fled toward Crescent Moon Valley.

"Doesn't the inheritance say that when a serpent dragon is critically injured and desperate, it commits suicide and casts a curse?"

"Its will to survive is stronger than I expected."

"Have I not pushed it to its absolute limit? Or is this just an individual variation?"

Garos pondered, leaning toward the latter. The inheritance's insights were primarily based on collective traits, and when applied to individuals, they proved less reliable. He couldn't fully trust them.

Garos pursued the cliff serpent dragon at a leisurely pace, prioritizing caution over haste. He kept his distance, using ranged attacks like dragon breath and the Silverfrost Ring to gradually wear down the creature, its condition steadily deteriorating.

The chase continued, with the dragon fleeing and Garos pursuing. Because their earlier struggle hadn't taken them far from the valley, the cliff serpent dragon soon landed in Crescent Moon Valley, its battered body trailing behind.

At this moment, the werewolves of the Howling Moon Clan were gathered together, standing in formation, their gazes divided between the cliff serpent dragon and the sky above, where they noticed the rapidly approaching black and red dragon silhouette.

The cliff serpent dragon landed before the old shaman.

The creature roared and declared, "Stop it! Kill it! It is my enemy!"

The "it" it spoke of was undoubtedly Garos.

Meanwhile, Garos had already arrived at Crescent Moon Valley, circling overhead.

What is the relationship between these werewolves and the cliff serpent dragon? Garos wondered, deciding to rely on his aerial advantage to wear down the creature with ranged attacks. The non-flying werewolves posed little threat to him.

But what surprised Garos was this:

He saw that as the cliff serpent dragon twisted its body, seeking help from the old shaman, the shaman suddenly erupted in a white glow, transforming into the spectral silhouette of a massive giant wolf. The phantom wolf struck the cliff serpent dragon's head with its claw.

The damage was minor, but it stunned the creature.
