The next day, Saturday.
It was the day Nina Donovan and the others had arranged to go to the Ancient Temple.
This morning, when Nina took a cup from a maid, she slammed it to the ground. The flying glass shards cut the maid's cheek.
A thin line of red blood trickled down the maid's face. This time, she didn't bow and scrape; she dropped directly to her knees and begged for mercy. "Miss, I'll make sure the water isn't so hot next time. Please, don't fire me."
Nina snapped back to her senses. She had subconsciously wanted to kick the maid viciously. Forcing herself to back away, Nina tripped on the stairs and fell, landing hard.
The commotion downstairs drew out both Mr. and Mrs. Donovan.
Lily Donovan came out of her room and looked down at the first-floor landing where Nina was sitting right on the stairs.
She rushed down. "Nina, what's wrong?"
Nina used one hand to forcefully hold down her other hand, which wanted to push Lily away. She managed a smile at Lily. "I'm fine."
