Golden sunlight bathed Li Xiang's backyard, making it bright and splendid. The persimmon tree was blooming with small, yellowish-white flowers that resembled tiny lanterns. They weren't especially vibrant, nor were the buds large, but hidden among the green leaves, they possessed a unique, fresh elegance.
The large water vat Li Xiang used for sprouting seeds was placed under the persimmon tree. He lifted the lid, rolled up his sleeves, and scooped out a handful. The rice seeds spread across his palm, each one plump with absorbed water.
He drained the old water, went to the kitchen to boil a pot, and then mixed it with cool water until it was around fifty degrees Celsius. It wasn't scalding, but it was still quite warm to the touch. He poured this new water into the vat.
