"Rosalind, eat this. It's nutritious."
Alaric said, placing some food in her bowl.
Rosalind glanced at her bowl, then back at him, a little surprised. But she obediently ate the food he'd given her.
She made small talk with him as she ate. When the meal was over, they both stood up.
Rosalind went to his side and hugged him. "Can I just hug you for a moment..."
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing. I just wanted a hug."
Alaric froze for a moment, then a faint smile touched his lips. He stroked her hair, stealing a quiet kiss on the crown of her head.
She held him for a long moment before letting go. "Should we head back?"
"Yeah."
...
She wrote a letter containing only three words: "I'm sorry, Alaric."
She placed the signed divorce papers and the letter together, tucking them under his pillow.
She slung a large bag over her shoulder, having hastily stuffed a few items of clothing inside, and left through the service exit at the back of the house.
