The heavy silence of the outer lobby pressed against me as I moved toward the inner set of doors. Every click of my shoes against the cold marble felt like a countdown. Reaching the entrance to his personal chambers, I set aside the velvet box on the desk which stood beside the entrance.
I raised my hand to knock, but my hand froze mid-air as a sound pierced the silence coming from the other side of the thick wood.
It was a low, fractured groan, followed by a sharp gasp for air. My breath hitched in my throat as my stomach did a violent flip. I recognized that voice instantly. It was Xander.
What was happening inside? What was happening to him? Who was in there with him?
As those questions started to cloud my senses, a sudden thought struck me.
