Confirming that none of them were lingering to watch us, I turned my attention fully back to the trembling girl. I swallowed the lump in my throat, staring at her as I gritted out the question, my voice laced with a mixture of pain and disbelief. "Why... why did you hit me, Neisa?"
Neisa let out a harsh, mocking scoff, throwing a venomous glare directly at me. Her hands clenched into tight fists at her sides.
"Why? Do you really forget, Irene...oh I meant to say Lady Irene? Or is it just that convenient for your noble conscience to wipe away the past?" she asked, her voice cracking under a wave of volatile emotion.
My brows furrowed deeply. A genuine confusion washed over me because I really, truly did not get what she was referring to.
Realizing that I genuinely looked clueless, Neisa's eyes began to burn with a fresh rim of tears. She sharply turned her head away, her shoulders shaking violently as she fought a desperate battle not to show her vulnerable, broken side to me.
