Chapter 55 - Chapter 55 – The Price of Love

Chapter 55 – The Price of Love

The temple became a battlefield.

Steel struck steel.

Torches fell.

Smoke filled the hall as the Imperial Guard forced their way through the broken doors.

Li Xuan fought beside Shen Lian, but neither of them could see what was happening beyond the next few steps.

The Crown Prince had brought too many soldiers.

The Black Lotus had too many assassins.

And somewhere between them stood Advisor Chen—

watching everything collapse.

"You lied to me."

The Crown Prince's voice cut through the chaos.

He stood before the Master.

The old man looked at him without fear.

"I promised you the throne."

"You promised me control."

"And you have it."

"No."

The Crown Prince's sword trembled in his hand.

"You used me."

The Master smiled.

"Of course."

The Crown Prince's expression changed.

For the first time, he understood.

The assassinations.

The accusations against Li Xuan.

The unrest inside the court.

None of it had been about helping him become Emperor.

The Black Lotus intended to control whoever sat on the throne.

Even him.

Advisor Chen stepped forward.

"Your Highness."

The Crown Prince turned.

"Don't."

"You're being manipulated."

"Be silent."

"The Master intends to remove the entire imperial family."

A pause.

"After that, there will be no throne for you to inherit."

The Crown Prince looked toward the Master.

The old man's silence answered for him.

Something inside the Crown Prince finally broke.

He turned his sword.

Not toward Li Xuan.

Toward the Master.

Everything erupted at once.

The Master moved.

The Crown Prince attacked.

Chen shouted orders.

The Imperial Guard surged forward.

And Li Xuan grabbed Shen Lian's hand.

"Come."

Shen Lian looked at him.

"Where?"

"Somewhere we can breathe."

"There isn't anywhere."

"Then we'll make one."

They disappeared through a side passage.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

They ran until the sounds of battle became distant.

Then Shen Lian stopped.

Li Xuan turned.

"What?"

Shen Lian's breathing was uneven.

"You shouldn't have come."

Li Xuan stared at him.

"Again?"

"I mean it."

"So do I."

"You don't understand."

"I understand perfectly."

"No."

Shen Lian shook his head.

"You don't."

He pulled something from inside his sleeve.

The porcelain vial.

Li Xuan's expression changed immediately.

"Where did you get that?"

"The Master."

"What is it?"

"You already know."

Li Xuan stepped closer.

"Give it to me."

"No."

"Shen Lian."

"No."

His voice cracked.

Only once.

But Li Xuan heard it.

Shen Lian looked down at the vial.

"If I drink it, they'll let you live."

Li Xuan went still.

"And if you don't?"

"They'll hunt you until you're dead."

"That isn't your decision."

"It is."

"No."

Li Xuan stepped closer.

"You don't get to decide whether you die for me."

Shen Lian's eyes filled with something he had spent years learning to hide.

Fear.

Not of death.

Of losing him.

"I've seen this before," he whispered.

"My mentor died because he cared about someone."

His voice shook.

"I watched him die."

Li Xuan said nothing.

"I told myself I would never make the same mistake."

A tear escaped before Shen Lian could stop it.

"I told myself attachment was weakness."

Li Xuan reached toward him.

Shen Lian caught his wrist.

"Don't."

"Why?"

"Because if you touch me…"

He swallowed.

"…I won't be able to do what I have to do."

Li Xuan's expression softened.

Not with pity.

With understanding.

"Then don't do it."

"I have to."

"No."

"I have to."

"No."

The word came harder this time.

Li Xuan took the vial from his hand and threw it against the stone wall.

It shattered.

The poison disappeared into the rainwater running across the floor.

Shen Lian stared at the broken porcelain.

"You…"

"I'd rather fight beside you."

A long silence followed.

Then Shen Lian laughed.

It wasn't happy.

It wasn't sad.

It was simply exhausted.

"You're impossible."

"I've been told."

"You could die."

"So could you."

"That isn't funny."

"I wasn't joking."

Shen Lian looked at him.

Really looked at him.

All the walls he had built for years seemed suddenly useless.

The palace.

The Black Lotus.

The Master.

The rules.

Everything had brought them to this moment.

He stepped forward.

Li Xuan didn't move.

Their foreheads almost touched.

"I'm afraid," Shen Lian whispered.

Li Xuan's voice was barely audible.

"So am I."

That answer broke something inside him.

Shen Lian closed the distance.

Their lips met.

The kiss was not gentle.

It was desperate.

Years of restraint seemed to collapse at once.

Li Xuan held him close, and Shen Lian's fingers tightened against his robes as though letting go would mean losing him forever.

For a few seconds, the battle outside disappeared.

There was no prince.

No assassin.

No Black Lotus.

Only them.

When they finally separated, neither moved far.

Shen Lian rested his forehead against Li Xuan's.

"If we survive…"

Li Xuan looked into his eyes.

"When we survive."

Shen Lian smiled faintly.

"When."

Then the sound of footsteps returned.

Fast.

Too many.

Li Xuan turned toward the passage.

Shen Lian reached for his hand.

This time—

neither let go.

At the other end of the temple, the Master stood surrounded by fallen soldiers.

The Crown Prince was on his knees.

Advisor Chen stood between them.

And the Master slowly looked toward the passage where Li Xuan and Shen Lian had disappeared.

His expression became cold.

"The poison was never the only choice."

He reached inside his robe.

Another vial appeared.

"Bring them to me."

The final battle had not ended.

It had only changed shape.
