Chapter 1 - The Night He Chose Power

The palace was too quiet that night.

Not the peaceful kind of quiet.

The dangerous kind.

Aria Valen stood outside the war council chamber, her fingers cold against the marble wall. Inside, the nobles were deciding her future like it was a chess piece.

And he was inside with them.

Kael.

Her childhood friend.

Her almost-lover.

The man who once promised, "I'll never choose the throne over you."

The heavy doors opened.

Kael walked out first.

His black military coat was still dusted with ash from the border war. His jaw was tight. His eyes avoided hers.

That was the first crack.

"They chose her," Aria said softly.

Kael didn't answer.

Behind him, Lord Meridan's voice echoed from inside the chamber.

"The alliance with House Verenth will secure the northern armies. The engagement will be announced tomorrow."

Engagement.

The word didn't feel real.

Aria waited for Kael to laugh.

To say this was strategy.

To say she was safe.

Instead, he stepped closer — close enough that she could see the exhaustion in his eyes.

"This… isn't about us anymore," he said.

Not sorry.

Not regret.

Just… practical.

Aria felt something inside her chest go silent.

"So I'm collateral?" she asked.

Kael's silence was the answer.

For years she had stood beside him — through political assassinations, poison attempts, border rebellions. She had advised him when the generals doubted him.

She had made him stronger.

And now he was choosing someone else because she came with armies.

"Aria…" his voice lowered. "You don't understand what it takes to rule."

Her eyes finally lifted fully to his.

"No," she said quietly. "I understand exactly."

Because in that moment, she realized something brutal.

She used to think he wanted someone beside him.

Now she realized he only wanted what strengthened his throne.

And she was not power enough.

A noblewoman walked past them, whispering,

"Some women are meant to stand beside kings. Others are meant to be forgotten."

Aria smiled faintly.

Forgotten?

The palace chandeliers flickered.

Just for a second.

A cold wind moved through the hallway even though the windows were sealed.

Kael frowned. "Did you feel—"

But it was gone.

Aria stepped back.

"You chose well, Your Highness."

That was the first time she called him that.

It hurt him more than she expected.

She bowed — perfectly royal, perfectly calm — and walked away.

None of them noticed the shadow stretching behind her feet.

None of them saw the mark glowing faintly at her wrist.

And none of them understood—

The empire had just made a mistake it wouldn't survive.
