Chapter 87 - Chapter 87: At the Gates

The figure did not move.

Mia and Luis stood just beyond the outer boundary of their territory, both alert and steady, their weapons ready but not raised. The tension in the air was unmistakable, pressing down around them as they faced something that no longer fit the rules they understood.

Luis shifted slightly, placing himself just enough in front of Mia without blocking her view.

"Don't step closer," he said quietly.

Mia didn't argue. Her eyes remained fixed ahead, sharp and calculating.

The figure stood upright, its posture unnaturally balanced. It was not like the infected they had fought before. There was no staggering movement, no mindless aggression. It stood as if it understood where it was, as if it knew exactly what it was doing.

Then it moved. One step forward, slow and deliberate.

Mia's grip tightened slightly. "Too controlled."

Luis nodded faintly. "Same behavior as earlier."

The figure stepped again, coming into clearer view. Its body showed decay, but the damage did not look fresh or chaotic. It looked stabilized, as if the infection had settled rather than consumed everything. Its head tilted slightly, and then its eyes became visible. Mia felt her breath pause for a brief moment. There was awareness in them.

Not empty, not lost but aware.

Luis noticed it as well. "It's looking at us."

Not through them, but directly at them.

The figure stopped advancing, maintaining a measured distance as if it understood boundaries that others of its kind never did. Mia took a step forward instinctively.

"Mia," Luis warned.

"I know," she replied, her voice steady, though she did not take her eyes off the figure.

It didn't attack. It didn't react. It simply watched her. Before anything else could happen, movement came from behind them. The bunker door opened, and footsteps approached quickly.

"Mia! Luis!" Ruth's voice began, but it stopped abruptly.

Mia turned slightly.

Ruth stood frozen, her eyes locked on the figure ahead. Her expression shifted from confusion to something deeper, something closer to fear.

"No…" Ruth whispered.

Mia's voice sharpened. "What is it?"

Ruth took a small step forward, her breathing uneven as if she were trying to process something she didn't want to accept.

"I know him."

Luis's expression hardened. "Who?"

Ruth swallowed, her voice trembling. "…Felix."

The name settled heavily in the air. Mia's eyes snapped back to the figure.

Felix Hill.

The posture, the awareness, the control—it all aligned too perfectly to ignore.

"Are you sure?" Luis asked.

Ruth nodded immediately despite the disbelief in her eyes. "I've seen him too many times. I won't mistake him."

The figure moved again, this time stepping toward Ruth. The movement was slow, careful, almost intentional. Mia reacted instantly, stepping forward and placing herself between Ruth and Felix. Her weapon rose slightly, no longer just ready but prepared.

"Stay behind me," Mia said firmly.

Ruth didn't argue, but her gaze never left Felix. Luis moved to Mia's side, his presence steady and unwavering. Felix stopped again, keeping the same measured distance. His face was clearer now. The infection was undeniable, but it had not erased him completely. His eyes still followed movement, still focused, still calculated.

"He was always like this," Ruth said quietly. "Watching. Thinking ahead."

"He still is," Mia replied.

Felix tilted his head slightly, then his gaze shifted. It settled on Mia. It didn't flicker or wander. It stayed, as if she had become the center of his attention. Luis noticed immediately, his stance hardening. "He's focusing on you."

Mia didn't respond, but she felt it. That attention was cold and deliberate, something that sent a quiet warning through her instincts. Felix took one more step forward.

Luis moved instantly, stepping in front of Mia. "Don't."

Felix stopped. The air tightened again, but no attack came. No sudden movement followed. There was only stillness and observation.

"He's not here to kill us," Mia said.

"Not yet," Luis replied.

"He's changed… but not completely," Ruth added, her voice quieter now.

"He's evolving," Mia said.

Luis exhaled slowly. "Then this is only the beginning."

Felix's gaze moved between them once more before he stepped back. Then again. Slowly retreating.

"He's leaving," Mia said.

"He's choosing to leave," Luis corrected.

Felix paused briefly, his gaze settling on Mia one last time before turning away and disappearing into the forest. The tension did not disappear with him. It lingered, heavy and unresolved.

Ruth's breathing was uneven. "That was him."

"I know," Mia said.

Luis lowered his weapon slightly. "We go inside."

They returned to the bunker without delay. The door closed behind them, sealing them inside once more. The space that once felt completely secure now carried a different weight. No one spoke much after that. Ruth eventually retreated to her room, still shaken. Their parents, though cautious, allowed themselves to rest, trusting Mia and Luis to remain alert.

Time passed quietly.

Mia stood alone in the training area, her hands resting lightly against the table as she stared ahead. Her thoughts circled the same realization again and again. This was not part of her past. Everything was changing.

She heard footsteps behind her.

"You should rest," she said without turning.

"You're not," Luis replied.

Mia exhaled softly before facing him. "I'm thinking."

"About him."

"Yes."

Luis stepped closer, not too near, but enough to stand within her space. "We'll figure it out."

"We always say that."

"And we always do."

A faint softness touched her expression before fading again.

"That wasn't normal," she said quietly. "He understood us."

"Then we adapt," Luis replied.

"This wasn't in my past."

"Then we stop relying on it."

Mia nodded slowly.

Silence settled between them, but this time it wasn't about danger or strategy. Something else lingered beneath it.

"Mia," Luis said.

"What?"

"I wasn't planning to say this like this."

"Say what?"

Luis held her gaze. "I don't know what's coming next. Not after today."

Mia stayed silent.

"And I don't want to wait for the right moment if there might not be one."

"Luis…" she started.

"I love you."

The words were steady.

Clear.

Mia froze, her eyes widening slightly as the weight of what he said settled in.

"I've known it for a while," Luis added. "I just didn't say it."

Mia looked at him, caught between surprise and something deeper she hadn't allowed herself to fully face.

"You chose now?" she asked softly.

"Yes."

Mia let out a slow breath, her gaze dropping briefly before lifting again.

"This isn't exactly good timing."

"I know."

A quiet pause followed.

Mia studied him carefully, then her expression softened just enough.

"I'm surprised," she admitted. "But not unhappy."

Luis didn't push further. He simply nodded once, accepting her answer.

Outside, something had changed.

Inside the bunker, something had begun.
