Chapter 97 - Chapter 97: Echoes Across the Boundary

Morning came quietly inside the bunker. There was no sunlight to mark the beginning of the day, only the steady hum of systems and the soft glow of artificial lighting that kept time for them. Life beneath the surface had settled into a rhythm, calm, controlled, and deliberate. It was the kind of peace they had learned to accept, even if it was built on uncertainty.

Mia stood alone in the surveillance room, her attention fixed on the monitors in front of her. Multiple screens displayed the forest surrounding the bunker, snow-covered ground, still trees, and wide stretches of white where nothing seemed to move. To most, it would look empty. Safe, even.

But Mia knew better.

She leaned forward slightly, adjusting one of the camera feeds. The image sharpened, focusing on a section near the outer boundary. Her gaze narrowed. A figure stood in the distance.

It did not wander like the others. It did not shift aimlessly or react to random stimuli. It stood where it was, as if it had chosen that exact position with intention. As if it had decided to be there. Mia did not move. She simply watched. A quiet sound behind her broke the stillness.

"You've been here for a while."

Luis's voice was calm, but there was a subtle concern beneath it.

Mia didn't turn immediately. "I woke up earlier than usual."

Luis stepped beside her, his gaze naturally shifting to the monitors. It didn't take long before he saw what she was watching. His expression sharpened almost instantly.

"He's closer," he said.

Mia gave a small nod. "Closer than before. And he hasn't moved."

Luis crossed his arms, studying the distance carefully. The figure stood nearer to the invisible boundary than it ever had before. Not enough to trigger immediate danger but enough to matter.

"He usually leaves after a few minutes," Luis said quietly.

"Yes," Mia replied. "But not today."

Silence settled between them again, heavier now.

Luis glanced at her. "You're thinking about going out there."

It wasn't a question.

Mia turned to face him, her expression calm and composed, the same look she had whenever she had already made a decision.

"I want to confirm something," she said.

Luis didn't respond right away. His gaze stayed on her, searching for doubt, for hesitation. But there was none. Only clarity.

And that made him uneasy.

"He's different," Luis said slowly. "We already know that. We don't need to test it this close."

Mia met his gaze. "We don't understand how far that difference goes."

Luis's jaw tightened slightly. "And if that difference disappears the moment we step closer?"

Mia didn't look away. "Then we retreat."

Luis exhaled quietly, running a hand through his hair before looking back at the screen. The figure was still there. Still watching. Still waiting.

"I don't like this," he admitted.

"I know," Mia said softly.

Another pause.

Luis closed his eyes briefly, then opened them again, steadier this time.

"…But I trust you."

Mia's expression softened just slightly.

"I won't take unnecessary risks," she said.

Luis gave a small nod. "Then I'm coming with you."

Mia didn't argue.

---

The cold air greeted them the moment they stepped outside. It was sharp and unforgiving, the kind that settled into your skin no matter how prepared you were. Snow crunched beneath their boots as they moved away from the bunker entrance, the world around them quiet in a way that felt almost unnatural.

Mia walked ahead, her steps steady and controlled. Luis stayed beside her, his attention divided between their surroundings and the figure waiting in the distance.

Felix stood just beyond the boundary.

He didn't move as they approached.

He didn't react like the others.

He simply watched.

Luis slowed slightly, his instincts tightening. "We're close enough."

Mia took one more step before stopping.

The distance between them and Felix was the closest it had ever been.

For a moment, nothing happened.

No sudden movement. No aggression. No change.

Just silence.

Mia's eyes remained fixed on him.

There was something different, not in appearance, but in presence. Something deliberate. Something controlled.

Luis felt it too.

"He's looking at you," he said quietly.

Mia already knew.

Felix's gaze was not unfocused. It did not drift. It was fixed on her, steady and unwavering.

Luis shifted subtly, stepping just slightly ahead of her, not enough to block her, but enough to place himself between her and any sudden movement. It was instinctive. Protective.

Mia didn't stop him.

She kept watching.

Felix remained still.

Then he moved.

Luis's body tensed immediately, every instinct sharpening at once.

Felix took a step forward.

Only one.

It was slow. Controlled. Not aggressive but intentional.

"Mia.." Luis said under his breath.

"I see it," she replied softly.

Felix stopped.

He didn't continue. He didn't cross the boundary. He simply stood there again, closer than before, but held back by something unseen.

Luis didn't relax. His gaze stayed locked, his body ready to react at any moment.

Mia tilted her head slightly, studying him more closely.

"He stopped himself," she said.

Luis didn't look away. "Or something stopped him."

Mia shook her head faintly. "No. That wasn't external."

Luis glanced at her.

"That was a decision," she added.

Luis looked back at Felix. The idea settled slowly. Felix stood still again, as if the single step he had taken was as far as he would allow himself to go. As if there was a line he would not cross.

Luis exhaled quietly, though the tension in his shoulders remained. "He's testing it."

"Yes," Mia said.

"The boundary."

Mia's gaze didn't waver. "And himself."

The silence that followed felt different. Not tense, not calm but aware. Like something unseen had shifted between them.

Felix's presence was no longer distant. It was something that existed within reach now. Something that reacted. Something that chose.

Luis's voice lowered. "If he takes another step…"

"We leave," Mia said.

Luis nodded once. They waited but Felix didn't move again. Instead, something subtle changed. His posture shifted, not forward, but back.

Luis noticed it first. "He's stepping away."

Mia saw it moments later. Felix turned slowly. Not abruptly, not like something startled. It was deliberate. He stepped back. One step then another. Creating distance between them once more.

Luis frowned slightly. "He's leaving."

Mia shook her head faintly. "No."

Luis looked at her.

"He's choosing to leave," she said.

Felix didn't look back.

He continued walking until he disappeared into the forest, his figure blending into the snow-covered trees until he was gone. The space he left behind felt different. Just… quiet in a new way.

Luis exhaled slowly, some of the tension finally easing from his body. "That was too close."

Mia didn't answer immediately. Her gaze lingered on the place where Felix had stood.

"He didn't try to attack," she said.

Luis nodded. "He hasn't. Not once."

Mia's voice was quieter now. "And he didn't cross the boundary."

"No."

"…Even when he could have."

Luis frowned slightly. "We don't know if he could have."

Mia looked back toward the forest.

"I think he could have," she said.

Luis followed her gaze. The forest remained still but now, that stillness felt intentional.

Luis let out a quiet breath. "I don't know if that makes things better or worse."

Mia's lips curved faintly. "It means we're not dealing with instinct anymore."

Luis glanced at her.

"We're dealing with choice," she added.

Luis looked back at the forest one last time, then nodded.

"…Then we need to be careful."

Mia nodded.

"We will be."

They turned and walked back toward the bunker together, the sound of their footsteps breaking the quiet snow. The boundary still held but now, it was no longer just something that separated them.

It was something being approached.

Understood.

And for the first time,

It felt like that line might not remain untouched forever.
