Chapter 1 - chapter one - for whom the bell tolls

I never thought about killing my mate. But today, I realised that thought was about to become reality.

**Three years earlier **

As I packed my bag, I watched the sunrise dance on the wall. The colours shined and sparkled. Something, that on a normal day would make me happy. But today wasn't a normal day. I was going to sit my final exam at WestWood high for girls. The school where "witches became witches", I still wasn't entirely sure what that meant.

"Selene!" The sound of my sister's melodic voice broke me from my daze.

"I know, I'm coming Freya" I sighed picking up an apple on my way out the door.

The hallways were crowded and full by the time we got inside. The hustle and bustle of finals echoing around. Groups of girls huddled talking about their spells as I pushed my way towards the library. I needed space. I needed quiet. As the large oak door clicked shut behind me the quiet covered me like a blanket. I closed my eyes and inahled deep, the smell of old books flooding my lungs. I walked over to where the older book were shelved, it was always quietest here. Grabbing one from the shelf I sat on the floor. I closed my eyes and held the book in my palms.

"Show me" I whispered. As I opened my eyes the book opened. The pages began to turn, one after another, until they landed on something I'd never seen before. Frowning, I read the first few words.

As one becomes ready, greatness will occur. The thing that scares others will still their hearts. The bridge between two will bring in a new dawn. Unlike any that has passed in an age.

I closed the book. It looked older than the others. The cover was faded and dusty, as if it had been long forgotten. I ran my fingers over the title. Magic and Blood. I'd never heard of it. The sound of the bell tore me from my thoughts. I stood and put the book back before gathering my things and heading for the Great Hall.

"Where were you?" Freya hissed catching up with me.

"I was in the Libary"

"Last minute studying?" She asked.

"Something like that." I shrugged. Freya rolled her eyes and walked towards her friends who were waiting by the door for her. I walked past unnoticed and into the large room full of exam desks. This was the last thing we'd do here before we leave. This one test was the only thing that stood between us and finishing. I took a deep breath and readied myself for the next hour.

After recalling what felt like every spell I'd ever learnt and answering question after question the hour finally came to a close. I was happy, I knew I'd passed. I glanced around looking for Freya. Her face was calm, but I wasn't sure she was as pleased as me. I looked down at my paper and sighed.

"Pens down everyone. Your test is complete." Headmistress Winterborne called. She gracefully clicked her fingers and the papers vanished. "You may all leave." She smiled. No one waited to be told twice. Everyone started to gather their belongings and make a quick exit. I was no different. I was ready to leave this school.

The walk home was quiet. I took the long route, heading into the woods and walking across the stream. My slice of paradise. The sun trickles though the trees and the water glistenes as is passes. The only noise to be heard is the water and the wildlife. Nothing else in the world.

When I walked up towards the house, the sound of voices and laughter fills my ears. Of course, my parents would celebrate today. Their wonderful daughter's last day of school. I was greeted by the obnoxious banner as soon as I opened the door.

Congratulations to our graduate, Freya!

I rolled my eyes as I noticed the messy pen at the bottom adding my name as an afterthought. I took off my shoes and headed straight for the stairs.

"There you are!" Freya's voice stopped me in my tracks. I turned to face her and plastered on a smile.

"Sorry, took the long way home"

"Of course you did," she smiled "mum and dad are throwing us a party to celebrate the end of school. Everyone is here." She continued as if that would make any difference.

"They're throwing you a party," I corrected "I'm just going to go up to my room." I smiled. I don't hate her, it wasn't her fault my parents forgot me. I was always the afterthought. My sister was beautiful and perfect. I was just there. Plain and quiet. But that is exactly how I liked it.

"Ok. I'll bring you something later?" Freya smiled, understanding in her eyes. I nodded and turned heading up the stairs away from the bustling noise and loud voices downstairs.

As I closed the door to my room I threw my bag on the chair. I was stopped by the red book clattering to the floor. I frowned. There was no book in there. Slowly, I walked over and picked up the book.

Magic and Blood

I blinked confused. I put this back…I know I did. I sat at my desk and turned on the small light. I held the book in my hand as I had done earlier and closed my eyes again.

"Show me" I whispered. Just as it had before, the book opened and the pages turned.

When love occurs two hearts forever intertwine. When their love occurs, worlds intertwine

I set the book down and frown. Who are they? Why is this book here? I looked at the front pages to see if there was any more information. Blank. No author, no publisher. Nothing. Just the title. Something deep down told me something wanted me to see this. Maybe someone wanted me to see this?
