Three months after Ace's return, the Whitebeard Pirates received word that would change everything.
The messenger was a battered-looking pirate from one of their allied crews, his ship half-sunk, his crew decimated. He stumbled onto the Moby Dick's deck with blood still wet on his face and terror still fresh in his eyes.
"Blackbeard," he gasped. "He's he's gathering power. Attacking allied territories. Taking Devil Fruits from anyone who has them. He has a crew now a real crew and they're hunting. Hunting for something. Hunting for "
"For what?" Marco caught the man as his knees buckled. "What are they hunting for?"
The messenger's eyes found Ace, and in them was something that made Ace's blood run cold.
"You," he whispered. "He said he said you're the key. The one who got away. The one who'll lead him to " But before he could finish, his eyes rolled back and he collapsed into unconsciousness.
The silence that followed was absolute.
Then Whitebeard spoke, and his voice was thunder wrapped in ice.
"Prepare the fleet. Send word to all our allies. We're going to war."
Ace stepped forward. "Pops, this is because of me. If I'd just "
"If you'd just died on Banaro Island, he'd have found another excuse." Whitebeard's eyes were hard. "This isn't about you, Ace. It's about what Teach wants. What he's always wanted. Power. Control. The throne that Roger left empty." He straightened to his full height, and for a moment he looked not like an old man with an IV in his arm but like the Strongest Man in the World, the emperor who had ruled the New World for decades. "And he'll learn, as so many have learned before him, that you don't take what belongs to my family."
The crew erupted into action, a controlled chaos of preparation and planning. But Ace stood frozen, the messenger's words echoing in his mind.
The one who got away. The one who'll lead him to
Lead him to what? What did Teach think Ace could give him?
The answer came to him in a flash of terrible understanding.
Luffy.
Teach had mentioned Luffy on Banaro Island mentioned turning him over to the World Government, using him as a bargaining chip. And now, with Ace alive and free, with the Whitebeard Pirates mobilizing against him, Teach would be desperate. Desperate enough to go after the one person Ace loved more than anyone.
Desperate enough to hunt Luffy.
"No."
The word escaped him before he could stop it, and suddenly all eyes were on him.
"Ace?" Marco's voice was concerned. "What is it?"
"I have to go. Now. Before " He was already moving, already reaching for his things, already calculating the fastest route to the New World's entrance. "Luffy. Teach is going after Luffy. I have to warn him. I have to protect him."
Whitebeard's voice stopped him cold.
"Ace."
The single word carried the weight of command, and despite everything, Ace found himself turning back to face his captain.
"If you leave now if you run off alone again you'll be doing exactly what Teach expects. You'll be playing into his hands." Whitebeard's expression was stern, but his eyes held something softer. Understanding. "Your brother is strong. Stronger than you know. And he has his own crew, his own path to follow. You can't protect him by abandoning your own family."
"But if something happens to him "
"Then we'll face it together." Whitebeard moved closer, his massive form blocking out the light. "That's what family does, Ace. We face things together. We don't run off alone to play hero. We stand shoulder to shoulder and fight as one."
Ace's hands clenched at his sides. Every instinct screamed at him to move, to act, to find Luffy before Teach could. But beneath that instinct, buried under years of solitary survival, another voice spoke.
Trust them.
Trust your family.
You're not alone anymore.
He took a breath. Then another. Slowly, the fire that had been building in his chest subsided.
"What do we do?"
Whitebeard's smile was like the sun breaking through clouds. "We do what we've always done. We protect what's ours. We send word to your brother through channels, carefully, so Teach doesn't intercept it. We strengthen our defenses, consolidate our allies, and prepare for war. And when Teach comes because he will come we'll be ready."
Ace nodded slowly. "And Luffy?"
"Your brother has survived impossible odds his entire life. He survived you, didn't he?" A rumble of laughter from the watching crew. "He'll survive Teach. And if he doesn't if the worst happens then we'll rain such fire down on Blackbeard's head that the world will remember it for a thousand years."
It wasn't perfect. It wasn't what Ace wanted. But it was something.
It was trust.
And for the first time in his life, Ace let himself trust that the people he loved could take care of themselves while he took care of his other responsibilities.
