This can't be right.
We never used protection, but I was on birth control, I reasoned internally.
The more I repeated it, the more ridiculous it sounded.
Then it hit me.
We had never used protection — and we hadn't even had sex more than twice. Right?
Right?
That shouldn't be enough to get pregnant. Exactly how fertile were we both?
He had always finished inside me, but I never paid it any mind. I was on birth control, contraceptive implants. Had been since I was eighteen.
I got the contraceptive implant at twenty-three — that had been the easier option. It was supposed to last three to five years, so why was I— Oh.
I stopped pacing as the realization washed over me in slow, painful waves. I turned to the doctor, who had been quietly observing me work through my spiral bouts of confusion and barely contained panic.
