Chapter 1 - Rejected by My Alpha, Claimed by the Lycan King

Chapter 1: The Night the Bond Broke

The Blood Moon rose slowly over the Nightfall Pack territory.

Crimson light spilled across the forest clearing, painting the trees in shadows and fire. The air smelled of pine, smoke, and anticipation.

Tonight was the Night of Claiming.

And Zara Nightshade stood in the center of it all.

Her white ceremonial dress clung to her trembling body. The silk felt too thin, too fragile — just like her.

Around her, wolves gathered in human form, whispering.

"She's the weakest in the generation."

"She barely shifted last year."

"Poor Alpha Kael…"

Zara lowered her eyes, pretending not to hear. She was used to the mockery. Nineteen years old and still considered defective.

Her wolf stirred faintly inside her.

He's coming, it whispered.

Her heart pounded.

At the head of the clearing stood the Alpha platform — carved from dark oak and stained with centuries of power. Upon it stood Alpha Kael Storm.

Tall. Broad. Dominant.

His black shirt clung to his muscular frame. Tribal ink wrapped around his arms, marking him as the strongest Alpha the Nightfall Pack had seen in decades.

Every unmated female wanted him.

But he was hers.

Or at least… he was supposed to be.

Tonight was the official recognition of their mate bond.

Zara forced herself to meet his gaze.

Cold.

There was no warmth there.

No desire.

No pride.

Only something sharp and unreadable.

Her stomach twisted.

The Pack Elder stepped forward. "Under the Blood Moon, we gather to witness the claiming of fated mates. Alpha Kael Storm and Zara Nightshade, step forward."

Her legs felt weak as she moved.

Kael descended from the platform with slow, powerful steps. The crowd parted for him automatically. Wolves bowed their heads in submission as he passed.

When he stood in front of her, Zara felt tiny.

Her wolf whimpered.

This wasn't how it was supposed to feel.

Mates were meant to bring comfort.

Safety.

Heat.

Instead, cold air wrapped around her like chains.

Kael leaned closer. His scent — cedarwood and dominance — filled her lungs.

"You look nervous," he murmured, voice low enough that only she could hear.

"I'm not," she whispered.

A lie.

His jaw tightened.

The Elder raised his hands. "Alpha Kael, do you accept the mate bond granted by the Moon Goddess?"

The world seemed to hold its breath.

Kael's silence stretched.

One second.

Two.

Three.

Zara's pulse roared in her ears.

Say it, her wolf pleaded. Say you accept.

Kael's eyes darkened as they locked onto hers.

Then he turned to face the entire pack.

His voice rang out — clear, commanding, merciless.

"Zara Nightshade…"

A chill slid down her spine.

"I, Alpha Kael Storm…"

Her chest tightened painfully.

"…reject you as my mate."

The words cracked across the clearing like thunder.

Gasps erupted.

Someone dropped a goblet.

A child whimpered.

Zara felt it before she understood it.

Pain.

Blinding. Violent. Devastating.

It tore through her chest like invisible claws, ripping the mate bond apart. She screamed as her knees hit the dirt.

Her wolf howled inside her head.

He broke us! He broke us!

Tears blurred her vision.

"No…" she whispered, shaking. "Kael—why?"

But he stepped back as if she disgusted him.

"I will not tie my bloodline to weakness," he declared coldly. "The Nightfall Pack deserves a Luna of strength."

Laughter echoed from somewhere in the crowd.

Humiliation burned hotter than the pain.

Zara tried to stand, but another wave of agony slammed into her. It felt like her heart was being crushed in a fist.

Her wolf's voice faded.

Then went silent.

Completely silent.

The absence was worse than the pain.

The Elder looked uneasy. "Alpha… public rejection carries consequences—"

"I am Alpha," Kael snapped. "I decide what strengthens this pack."

He didn't even look at her again.

Zara lay in the dirt beneath the Blood Moon, shattered.

Alone.

Rejected.

The bond was gone.

And so was her wolf.

The clearing buzzed with cruel whispers.

"She couldn't even keep her mate."

"Pathetic."

"Maybe she'll finally leave."

Tears slid down her cheeks, but she forced herself not to sob.

She would not give them that satisfaction.

Suddenly—

The wind shifted.

A new scent invaded the clearing.

Dark.

Ancient.

Royal.

Every wolf froze.

Even Kael stiffened.

The temperature dropped.

The forest grew unnaturally quiet.

Then heavy footsteps echoed from the tree line.

Crunch.

Crunch.

Crunch.

Each step carried overwhelming power.

An aura pressed down on the entire pack like a mountain.

Wolves began to kneel instinctively.

Not to Kael.

But to whatever was approaching.

A tall figure emerged from the shadows.

Black coat.

Broad shoulders.

Eyes that glowed molten gold beneath the Blood Moon.

The air around him seemed alive — charged with something primal and terrifying.

Zara's heart skipped.

Her broken wolf, silent just moments ago…

…stirred violently.

The stranger's gaze swept across the clearing.

Every wolf lowered their head.

Except him.

And Kael.

Alpha Kael stepped forward, forcing dominance into his voice. "You trespass on Nightfall territory."

The stranger tilted his head slightly.

Amused.

"Trespass?" His voice was deep. Smooth. Dangerous. "You mistake me."

A wave of power rolled off him.

Several wolves collapsed to their knees fully.

Even Kael's jaw clenched.

Recognition dawned in horrified whispers.

"The Lycan…"

"It can't be…"

"The King…"

Zara's breath caught.

The Lycan King was not myth.

He was legend.

Older than the Alpha bloodlines.

Stronger than any pack combined.

And he was standing in front of her.

His golden eyes stopped on her crumpled form in the dirt.

He inhaled slowly.

Then his expression changed.

Interest.

"What is this?" he murmured.

His gaze flicked to Kael. "You rejected her."

It wasn't a question.

Kael lifted his chin. "She is weak."

The Lycan King stepped closer.

Zara felt the earth vibrate beneath his boots.

He crouched before her.

Up close, he was devastatingly handsome — sharp jawline, dark hair falling carelessly across his forehead, eyes that seemed to see through her.

But beneath that beauty was something feral.

Something lethal.

His fingers brushed her chin gently, lifting her face.

Electricity shot through her body.

Her silent wolf roared back to life.

Not weak.

Not broken.

Awakened.

The Lycan King's eyes flared.

"Well," he said softly, almost to himself. "That was foolish."

Kael growled. "Watch your words."

The Lycan rose slowly to his full height.

And smiled.

"You rejected her," he repeated calmly.

Then his voice dropped — commanding, absolute.

"Then I claim her."

The clearing exploded into chaos.

Kael's eyes flashed. "She belongs to Nightfall!"

The Lycan's aura expanded violently, crushing the air from everyone's lungs.

"She belongs," he corrected, gaze never leaving Zara, "to me."

Zara's heart pounded wildly.

Claim?

What did that mean?

She had just been rejected.

Broken.

Humiliated.

And now the most powerful being in the werewolf world was looking at her like she was treasure.

Like she was his.

Her wolf purred.

The Lycan extended his hand toward her.

"Stand, little wolf."

His voice was no longer cold.

It was… certain.

Zara hesitated.

Behind her, she felt Kael's fury burning like fire.

If she took that hand, everything would change.

If she refused… she would remain nothing.

Weak.

Rejected.

Alone.

The Blood Moon glowed brighter.

Her wolf whispered.

He is power.

He is ours.

Zara placed her trembling hand in his.

The moment their skin touched—

A surge of energy exploded between them.

The ground cracked beneath their feet.

Gasps filled the clearing.

The Lycan King's golden eyes burned brighter.

"There you are," he murmured.

And for the first time in her life…

Zara Nightshade did not feel weak.

She felt chosen.

The Lycan turned toward the pack, his arm possessively around her waist.

"She leaves with me."

Kael stepped forward. "You cannot just—"

The Lycan's gaze snapped to him.

Deadly.

"You forfeited your right."

Silence.

Then he looked down at Zara again.

"You were rejected tonight."

His thumb brushed lightly against her jaw.

"But from this moment forward…"

His voice dropped to a promise.

"You are under my protection."

The wind roared.

Wolves bowed fully.

And as the Lycan King pulled her toward the forest shadows—

Zara glanced back one last time.

At the pack that mocked her.

At the Alpha who discarded her.

And she swore silently—

They would regret it.

The Blood Moon watched as the rejected girl walked away beside a king.

And somewhere deep within her blood…

Something ancient awakened.
