Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: A Stranger’s Charm

Evan walked into the conference room, his polished shoes clicking sharply on the marble floor. The investors were already seated, a group of three men in dark suits, their faces stern and businesslike. But there was one face that stood out—a face that, for reasons Evan couldn't immediately place, felt different.

The man in question was young—perhaps only a few years older than Evan himself—and his demeanor was entirely at odds with the stiff formality of the room. While the others sat upright with their papers neatly in front of them, this man leaned casually in his chair, one arm resting on the back. His eyes were a piercing shade of blue, the kind that seemed to see through everything, and there was a faint but knowing smile on his lips.

The man stood up as Evan entered, extending a hand. "Mr. Harper, I assume?" His voice was low and smooth, his accent clean and neutral. There was something almost playful in his tone, something that didn't quite match the serious atmosphere of the meeting.

"Yes," Evan replied, shaking the man's hand with a firm grip. "Evan Harper."

"I'm Cameron Woods," the man said, "But you can call me Cam." His hand lingered a moment longer than necessary before he sat back down, his gaze never leaving Evan.

Evan didn't immediately sit. Instead, he took a moment to assess Cam, the same way he would any other potential partner. There was something about the way Cam carried himself—too confident, too at ease in an environment that demanded formality. But Evan couldn't deny that it intrigued him.

"Mr. Woods," Evan began, sitting down at the head of the table. "I'm here to discuss the terms of this partnership, and—"

"Oh, please," Cam interrupted, his smile widening, "Let's not do the formalities just yet, Mr. Harper. We both know why we're here, and I'm sure you don't have time to waste on the usual speeches."

Evan raised an eyebrow, taken aback by the interruption, but he couldn't help feeling a flicker of curiosity. Most people would have been intimidated by his presence, but not Cam. There was an ease to him that made Evan feel strangely... unsettled.

"I'm here because I believe we can do great things together," Cam continued, his voice softening but carrying an edge of confidence. "But I'll be honest with you—there's more at stake here than just business. For me, at least."

Evan's eyes narrowed. The statement was bold, but Cam didn't flinch. There was no hesitation in his gaze, no signs of doubt. Just an unwavering certainty.

For a moment, Evan found himself speechless. The young man's unorthodox approach was unsettling, but in some strange way, it also made him more... compelling. More real than any of the stiff businessmen who were usually in his orbit.

"What exactly do you mean by that?" Evan asked, his tone slightly sharper now, his mind already working through the potential implications.

Cam leaned forward, his blue eyes locking with Evan's. "I mean that you're not just another deal for me, Mr. Harper. This partnership, whatever it becomes, is about something deeper. You see, I've always believed that business isn't just about numbers and contracts. It's about knowing the right people—and knowing what they really need."

Evan felt his pulse quicken slightly. There was something in Cam's words that seemed to strip away the usual formalities, something that made Evan feel both cautious and intrigued.

"So, what do you think I need, Mr. Woods?" Evan asked, the question sounding more personal than he intended.

Cam didn't hesitate. "You need someone who understands you. Who can help you see beyond just the empire you've built. Because, let's be honest, Mr. Harper, what good is an empire if you've built it on sand?"

For a brief moment, Evan was speechless. The words hit him harder than he expected. The business side of him wanted to shut it out—to keep the conversation focused on the partnership at hand. But something about the way Cam spoke, the confidence in his tone, made Evan wonder if there was more truth to it than he was willing to admit.

Evan cleared his throat, pushing the unsettling feeling aside. "We'll discuss the terms now. I'm here to talk about the deal."
